Posted in Flash Memory,Mobile Phones,Samsung by Chris Weber on May 30th, 2007

MoviMCP 4GB multi-chip package memory for mobile phones from SamsungToday Samsung has announced a chipset for mobile phones targeting those ever-growing multimedia files of music and movies that everyone likes to take with them. The MoviMCP (Muti-Chip Package) is a set of Flash memory for operating the phone as well as storing files.

The moviMCP has a capacity of 4GB to store data to be exact, which almost eliminates the need for purchasing an expensive external SD card. The package also allocates 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash memory for running the core operations of the phone.

Denser memory such as this allows phone designers, including Apple with the iPhone, to be able to make their designs even slimmer without compromising storage capacity. No exact date on when we’ll see devices using this chipset quite yet or what kind of cost implications it will have but Samsung …

High Altitude Phone Call

Posted in Mobile Phones,Motorola,News by Chetz on May 24th, 2007

Mountain climber makes a phone call from the top of Mt Everest using Motorola Z8.We had talked about the new Motorola Motorizr Z8 last week when it was officially unveiled but now the company is doing something especially novel to get us to pimp their phone again: how about having a mountaineer making calls from the top of the world? Rod Baber is an experienced mountain climber that is currently scaling Mount Everest. One of the items Rod brought with him is the new Z8 so that he could take and send back photos, text messages and voice calls from the very summit of Everest. Why do that? Well, as the company’s webpage plainly says, “Because no one else has.”

After ascending the mountain and beaming back photos/text messages from his trek, on Monday, May 21 Baber made a call using his Motorizr Z8 from 29,035 feet, …

Century Sutra 1688 mobile phone gamesThose that are game obsessed in China have a new gadget to keep their eyes glued to their mobile phone and it’s a blast from the past. The Century Sutra 1688 phone looks like any other generic mobile out there until you slide on the gamepad and turn it into a SNES thanks to the emulator chip inside of it.

Yup, now you can play Super Mario Bros. and other old school Nintendo games while killing time and your button mashing will be made a lot easier. The company gives you 1,500 ROM titles when you pick one of these up and it skirts around copyright issues by saying that you should only have all those warez if you also own the originals…which of course we all do, don’t we?

The phone has the popular touchscreen, a 1.3 megapixel camera, dual …

Nokia N82 Preview

Posted in Mobile Phones,Nokia by Chris Weber on May 11th, 2007

Nokia N82Along with the preview of the N81, RingNokia also got a look ahead at the Nokia N82. The model number is only incremented by one, but we have a feeling price will be incremented a fair amount more.

The Nokia N82 is also quad-band GSM supporting Bluetooth and WiFi, but only has 100MB of memory built into it. You can add your own though, with an included 1GB microSD card or your own card (hot-swappable no less).

Some additional features round out the N82 to be a pretty nice system, including a GPS receiver, TV-out, and FM tuner and the relatively high quality cameras it houses. One for still photos at 5 megapixels with a XENON flash and another for VGA recording at 30 frames per second.

Most of our curiosity regarding the N82 now focuses on the price tag. I can’t imagine a package like …

Nokia N81 Slider phoneWe found this preview of the Nokia N81 slider phone at RingNokia, showing a new sleek looking multimedia-focused device, which according to their source is expected to be available to consumers in the 4th quarter yet this year.

The N81 is quad-band EDGE which also supports WiFi and Bluetooth and has a nice 8GB of internal memory to store your media. WiFi connectivity and lots of internal memory are a big plus for any handheld device in our book. The Nokia N81 also houses two cameras and a 2.4″ QVGA screen at 240×320 in 16M colors.

The battery it ships with is expected to give 3-4 hours of talk time or up to 3-4 hours of gaming time. Oh yeah, and apparently this phone has some “dedicated keys” for gaming and navigating music but we’re not seeing them in the photo. The listed dimensions are …

Whereas the P1 is geared more toward the business spectrum of clients the T250 was designed to serve the needs of those that just want the functionality of a straight phone but with a higher end design style seen on more expensive models (that’s polite talk for saying “It’s cheaper but looks pricey.”

The T250 has a speakerphone, VGA camera, predictive text input for fast text and picture messaging, an in-phone calendar and an FM radio. It also does a slew of side functions like offer a calculator mode, stopwatch, timer and the kit comes with a stereo handsfree headset.

P1 Smartphone from Sony EricssonSony Ericsson’s P1 mobile phone/PDA hybrid is a step forward and upward from its predecessors. Positioned in-between a bland corporate tool and something with more of a personality the P1 has a ton of functionality and features embedded into its svelt frame (which is 25% smaller than the P990.)

It’s got Bluetooth, USB 2.0, WiFi and infra-red capabilities, is GSM and 3G functional, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a built-in FM radio, a touch sensitive screen, 160 MB internal memory and a battery talk time of three-and-a-half hours.

Posted in Palm,Smart Devices,Treo 755P by Darrin Olson on May 9th, 2007

Palm Treo 755pPalm has recently released the latest in its ever-slowly-improving lineup of smart devices, this time expanding on the 700 series with the Palm Treo 755p running on the Sprint network.

The Treo 755p is the first Treo that ships equipped with the Microsoft Direct Push technology for email as well as Google Maps for mobile devices. The Google Maps support lets you can not only see maps and satellite photos, but also get directions, see listings local to your area and even get real-time traffic updates. It’s a CDMA device and unfortunately WiFi support is still a lacking nice-to-have that we always look for in a smartphone.

The device does however have support for EvDO (Rev.0), mini-SD card slot supporting up to 4GB cards, a 1.3 megapixel camera that takes stills and video, SMS support for Yahoo, AOL and Gmail, and the ability to watch …

S500 Mobile Phone From Sony Ericsson

Posted in Mobile Phones,Sony Ericsson by Chris Weber on May 8th, 2007

S500 mobile phone from Sony Ericsson“Small details” are what set these phones apart according to Sony Ericsson and their designers. With the S500 these designers have added some small details to a new mobile phone that appears very similar to recent Walkman models.

The Sony Ericsson S500 sports a new concept by adding more to the individualization of a mobile device. Aside from just setting themes on the display and choosing from different colors, this device can be set to change the look of its desktop and menu as time passes. Users can set the S500 to have the displayed theme and hidden illuminations change as day turns to night, as you go into the weekend or even more slowly as the seasons change throughout the year. On a little more static basis, this phone comes in colors of “Mysterious Green” or “Spring Yellow”.

The new design comes with …

Elite EML 1 Model Look Mobile Phone

Posted in EML 1 by Darrin Olson on April 21st, 2007

elite EML 1 Model Look mobile phoneA new phone from Elite Model Look called the Elite EML 1 has taken the runway having a design with a “model” in mind.

The small square flip phone is petite on both it’s size and features. The EML 1 has nearly square dimensions of 59 x 53 x 22.5 and weighs in at 75 grams, has a battery that gives about 3 hours of talk time and sports a 300k VGA camera and a 65K color TFT display. The phone supports the communication basics including SMS, MMS and GPRS and has some common tools such as an alarm, calendar and a calculator, but nothing incredibly impressive.

This is Elite Model Look’s first stab at designing a phone, but without the accessories the phone alone looks just a little bit bland to us. The flip style clamshell is well overdone. Although the …
