iPad arriving in Walmart stores starting next week?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on October 10th, 2010

Way back in May we told you that Walmart would be offering iPads this year and it looks like that is about to happen. A photo of an email sent to Walmart store managers received by MacRumors indicates that the Apple iPad will be rolled out to up to 1000 stores by the end of October, starting next week.

The photos show that Walmart will be offering all six models of the iPad with initial stock limited to just five of each model per store. Never fear, the standard range of iPad accessories will also offered along with AppleCare extended warranties. Sources say that an additional 800 stores will begin carrying the device in November, and each store will have a live demo unit inside a case that will include a looping video demonstration of the iPad in action.

Seven-inch iPad to have Retina Display, 128GB of memory?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on October 7th, 2010

According to Taiwanese component suppliers contacted by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, Apple is not only working on a 7-inch iPad, but one that should have a camera, Retina Display and up to 128GB of storage. Current iPads are limited to 64GB of memory. The analyst was also told that the new device should launch in the first quarter of 2011, and have a “micro or mini” USB port.

The current iPad does support USB peripherals, but only through its 30-pin dock connector, which limits people to one add-on at a time. AppleInsider notes that the port may reflect the European Union’s establishment of micro USB as a standard for mobile charging.

Apple to ship more iPads in 2011 than Android tablets combined?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 27th, 2010

Looks like Apple will dominate the tablet market for at least the next year, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley. He estimates that Apple will ship 13.4 million iPads in 2010 and 25.5 million in 2011. The closest to Apple is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, which will reach 1.5 million by the end of the year and move another six million in 2011.

The combined Android platform fares a bit better, with Dell and Motorola contributing two million and three million tablets of their own next year, but Apple will still have most of the sales. This is due its headstart and its positive UI experience.

iPad and speakers get mounted on a bike

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 24th, 2010

Apple’s iPad can seemingly do anything and go anywhere. Now we have seen the tablet attached to a bike, along with speakers in front. We don’t have many details, but we do know that this guy will want to easily remove both iPad and speakers everytime he parks that bike.

That iPad cradle looks well made, but I still cringe about bumps and accidents killing the device. Anyway, it’s a cool setup. We like it.

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 20th, 2010

If you’re looking for an iPad case that also has a built-in keyboard, this one will do the trick. Check out this new case from Brando. It makes your iPad look like a notebook.

The keyboard runs through Bluetooth and has a built-in lithium battery that’s good for about a week and stands-by for a full 100 days. The keyboard can even be removed and used up to 10 meters away. It’s made of high-quality leather and claims to be waterproof as well.

7-inch iPad coming with front and back cameras?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 20th, 2010

Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar claims that a seven-inch iPad is coming and that at least one future iPad will have dual cameras. The finished devices would arrive sometime in 2011, according to Kumar.

Competition is heating up in the tablet market, so two cameras would give it a possible edge: the Samsung Galaxy Tab has both front and back cameras that can be used not just for video chat but for apps that need a back camera and would still make sense on a tablet, such as augmented reality or barcode readers.

ABC app listens to your TV to synchronize interactive content

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 19th, 2010

Those fine folks in charge of TV ratings that don’t work very well, Nielsen, have come up with a new way to monitor your home, or at least your Tv viewing habits. Maybe both. It’s an official ABC app that uses the iPad’s microphone to figure out what you’re watching, no matter if it is live or recorded, and offer interactive content based on this.

Nielsen says the app uses the same audio watermarks that are embedded in almost every US television show to do its thing. I guess that means that your household conversations are safe. For now. It has only been announced for the show My Generation so far.

iPad killing Notebook sales by as much as 50%?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 17th, 2010

We all know that Apple’s iPad is a smashing success, but just how many netbooks and notebook computer sales is it destroying? Well, Best Buy’s CEO has dropped a shocking statistic out of nowhere.

According to him, the iPad has cannibalized sales of notebook computers by at much as 50 percent! If true and if those figures are consistent across many retailers, then maybe Apple is killing netbooks faster then anyone thought.

iPad headed to Target on October 3rd?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 13th, 2010

Apple iPad launchRumor is that the iPad might hit Target stores in October. There’s no concrete proof yet, but some info from a tipster seems to suggest just that. Among the compelling evidence is a list featuring a mysteriously unnamed product that’s set to become available on October 3rd (in six different versions), and a series of images from a Target PDA that seem to show that the item numbers match the iPad prices exactly.

Also it will be located in the Digital Audio section, which is apparently how e-readers like the Kindle are classified, as well as iPods.

California testing iPads as algebra textbooks

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2010

We’ve seen iPads being offered on planes and in hotels, and now they are hitting schools. A pilot project in four California school districts will replace 400 students’ eighth-grade algebra textbooks with Apple iPads in an attempt to prove the advantages of interactive digital technologies over traditional teaching methods. He should help to correct their spines as well, since an iPad in the backpack weighs a lot less than a book.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has teamed up with California Secretary of Education Bonnie Reiss for the pilot, which will take place at Long Beach Unified School District, Riverside Unified School District, Fresno Unified School District and San Francisco Unified School District.

RockStar games has announced that it will be launching a version of GTA for the Apple iPad, Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars HD. That should make some iPad users very happy. Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars HD will be available on the iPad on September the 9th for $9.99.

That seems a bit expensive, but then again it is a GTA game. At least Chinatown Wars HD comes to the iPad with brand new, updated high definition graphics.

iPads finally shipping within 24 hours

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on August 29th, 2010

On Saturday Apple quietly shortened the shipping times for new iPads on the Apple Store to 24 hours. Every model now ships within a day after it was ordered. It’s not clear if Apple retail stock has caught up, but other international stores also show the reduced lead time.

This is the first time in the five months of iPad availability that Apple can expect to keep up with demand and supports the idea that Apple has had to step up production to guarantee a healthy supply. Apple reportedly sub-contracted Samsung to help make the 9.7-inch multi-touch displays after LG Display’s factories weren’t enough.

iLunascape Browser for iPad

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on August 20th, 2010

The new iLunascape browser has been specifically designed for browsing on Apples iPad and will keep all your browsing functions at your fingertips. The iLunscape design takes into account how people hold and interact with their iPads by moving most of you browsing controls to the bottom.

It also offers tabbed browsing, common in standard desktop browsers but not often found in mobile-device browsers. The folks at i4U give the app a 9 out of 10. Should make using your iPad more enjoyable.
