iPad 2 announcement date leaked via a Stock Image?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 20th, 2011

The latest crazy conspiracy theory on the internet is that the iPad 2′s announcement date can be found on some stock images of the iPad. Apparently, the iPad will be announced on February 9 because in the stock image, the calendar has the date “Wednesday, 9″ and February 9th of this year falls on a Wednesday.

Wow. That’s some fine leaps in logic. However, when the current iPad was announced, it was on Wednesday 27, a date which has been prominent in some iPad stock images. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. Perhaps we should consult the Mayan calendar.

Playboy Magazine coming to iPad in March

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2011

The full catalog of Playboy, from the first issue in 1953 to its latest, is coming to the iPad in March. And it will be uncensored. That comes straight from Hef himself. It doesn’t make a lot of sense when you consider Apple’s App Store rulings and Steve Jobs’ comments on keeping adult material off of mobile devices, but whatever.

It will be interesting to see how they do this and how it shapes what else is allowed on the iPad.

iPad got 87.4% of tablet market last summer, Kindle 41.5% of e-reader market

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 18th, 2011

Apple claimed 87.4 percent of the tablet market before the Galaxy Tab hit the scene, according to an IDC study of tablet share. Apple had a near-monopoly of the tablet market last summer. Analysts also expected 17 million tablets to have shipped by the end of the year, almost all of which would still have been iPads.

Of course Android would have cut into Apple’s share in the fall with 1.5 million Galaxy Tabs estimated sold and will likely cut into it even deeper in 2011 with the Motorola Xoom for one. RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook could play a part as well.

Next iPad, iPhone expected to use dual-core graphics

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 16th, 2011

We knew that Apple wanted faster mobile graphics for the next iPad and iPhone and we have some more details about its choice. The company is now said to be using the SGX543MP2, specifically the dual-core version. The new video is estimated to have about four times the performance of the current SGX535.

This speed increase would be welcomed along with the rumored 2048×1536 display resolution of the next iPad and could enable the kind of higher quality movie playback that would keep Apple competitive against it’s foes. It would most likely support 1080p video decoding in hardware.

iPad Cash Register App

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 16th, 2011

Looks like the cash register is dead. Or soon will be. The iPad is already an essential business tool for some small business’ and a new cash register application should make it even easier for small businesses to take payments via their iPad. The application created by shopkeep.com has been put into service in the Joe coffee shop in Grand Central Terminal in New York. The new point-of-sale app will also print receipts and even makes the mandatory ka-ching when sales are rung up.

It will also transmit sales information to its web-based system so that managers using ShopKeep’s BackOffice software can track sales in real time, manage their inventory, run reports and export the data for use in other applications.
