iPad to be used in airplane cockpits

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 7th, 2011

The iPad truly is being used everywhere. Now the Federal Aviation Administration has granted early approval to use them in airplane cockpits, as major commercial airline companies including Delta want to do away with paper maps.

It’s a great idea, but maybe they could have one or two paper maps still. Just in case. The FAA has also started to grant approval for “electronic flight bags,” alternatively known as computers for aviation use in the last decade. Let’s hope the pilots don’t get too distracted playing Angry Birds or watching movies.

Best Buy to give iPads to sales staff?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 6th, 2011

A report suggests that all Best Buy sales staff may receive iPads soon. The info comes from Forbes who received a tip from a “source with knowledge of corporate mobile device deployments,” who claims that an iPad roll-out for staff will happen for one of America’s top ten retailer’s with about 1,100 stores. So it would seem that they mean Best Buy, which has been an Apple Partner since the launch of the original iPad.

The retailer already has 27 Connected World stores, where sales staff are equipped with iPads, and other mobile devices. This could be part of a plan to expand the pilot program of Connected Word stores to all of its stores nationwide.

Verizon Wireless advertises iPad 2

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 6th, 2011

The iPad 2 is all about sharing this time around since Verizon Wireless and AT&T will both be offering the iPad 2. Verizon Wireless is already starting to advertise the the iPad 2 even though it isn’t out yet. They are probably trying to sway all of the fence sitters, though we aren’t sure if this advertising will be effective.

Because we are pretty sure that everyone already wants the iPad’s sequel without seeing any advertising. At any rate, when March 11th comes around, you can head to your nearest Verizon Wireless store and seal the deal.

CrystalRoc Swarovski case for iPad 2

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 6th, 2011

Now that Steve has launched iPad 2, CrystalRoc isn’t missing the chance to glam it up with their first Swarovski encrusted iPad 2 cases. I wonder how many of these they actually sell. Michael Jackson is gone, so there goes one sale. I suppose Elton John will get one, maybe Lady Gaga.

It comes decked out in more than 4000 crystals and is exclusively produced in their London Studios. For just $700, you can encase your new iPad in either Swarovski Crystal, Jet Hematite or Rose cases. The company also accepts orders for custom color cases as well.

Apple offering refunds to recent iPad buyers

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

If you bought an iPad recently and were bummed out because the new one just came out, we have some good news for you. Apple has announced that users who purchased the first generation iPad within the last 2 weeks can get a refund. They can either request a $100 refund, or they can return their device to Apple for a full refund since the iPad 2 will be offered at the same prices of the current iPad.

Think of it as a trade in for the new device. This 2 week window means that those of you who purchased the iPad earlier than February 16 would not be eligible for the offer though. Hopefully you purchased yours at the right time.

Apple cuts original iPad price to $399

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2011

Steve Jobs said earlier that the new iPad pricing will stay exactly the same as the original iPad, which means a base price of $499 for the 16GB WiFi version. Well, despite the fact that you can’t get an iPad 2 until March 11th and you can’t pre-order it yet, it looks like Apple is already putting the original models on sale.

The base model 16GB WiFi only iPad is $399, with prices ranging up to $729 for the 64GB 3G model. You can also get a refurbished one for a starting price of $349. So if you want the original model, now is the time to get one. Will you be getting one?

Panasonic has launched three new iPhone/ iPod docking stations in Japan. They are the SC-HC55, SC-HC35 and SC-HC05. All of these new docking stations come with FM radio and Bluetooth support. The Panasonic SC-HC55 is the high-end version and features a CD player and Bluetooth hands-free module with an output of 2x40W.

The Panasonic SC-HC35 lacks the Bluetooth hands-free module, while the Panasonic SC-HC05 is an entry-level model without a CD player and Bluetooth hands-free module. They look pretty good.

iPad 2 shows up early in China?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2011

The above mockup was spotted in China and seems to match closely what we have been hearing about the iPad 2. It has a slimmer profile, an almost entirely flat back, larger speaker, and rear- and front-facing cameras. The model number is one for the original Apple TV while the FCC ID is for a WiFi-only iPad, but those could be placeholders since this is a mockup and not a real working tablet.

It looks like the SIM card slot has been repositioned to a slot that was once expected to house an SD card reader. There is also the 3G antenna and the sloped power button and headphone jack.

We already know that the iPad 2 will feature at least one video camera in front for Apple’s FaceTime software, we have also heard that the iPad 2 will have a slimmer design.

Sanus VMA301 iPad Mount Adapter mounts your iPad to the wall

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on February 17th, 2011

The iPad is supposed to be portable. Even so, sometimes you want to mount it somewhere so it can act as a monitor. Sanus can help. They have unveiled a new wall mount adapter for the iPad. The adapter doesn’t include the actual wall mount, but it does come with the adapter that you need in order to mount the iPad to any wall mount that uses a 100 x 100 VESA mount plate.

The adapter features a virtual Axis 3D faceplate that allows the iPad to be moved from portrait to landscape modes. The faceplate only works with the Sanus MF202, MF209, MF215, MC1A and MD115 wall mounts however.

Did Walmart sell a Georgia man a fake iPad?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on February 13th, 2011

This story smells a bit fishy, but a Georgia man claims that a local Walmart sold him a fake iPad, and now the store is refusing to give him a refund.

The iPad shown in the video below is obviously one of those fake display models Walmart uses to trick thieves, but how did Ken Lamal end up with this in his box instead of a new authentic iPad? That’s the question. This story just doesn’t sound right though. In the video, the reporter takes it to an Apple tech to confirm that it isn’t the real thing. I mean, come on. You should know better. The tech says that it’s probably a “brick in the box” return, meaning that a customer bought an iPad, then substituted the display model for the real thing and returned it for a refund.

iPad 3 coming this fall?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on February 10th, 2011

We are still waiting for the iPad 2 to be made official, but there are already rumors about an iPad 3 that could be out as early as this fall. Sure, I guess it could happen. The rumor goes like this. Apple will unveil the iPad 2, which will be a modest update to the original iPad. It’ll get a front-facing camera, a faster processor, more RAM as well as support for both AT&T and Verizon’s networks. It won’t get a new retina display.

Then, during the fall/holiday season, Apple will unveil a bigger upgrade to the iPad, one with the higher-resolution display. The thinking is that this will allow Apple to adjust the yearly upgrade window for the iPad to be right in the middle of the holiday shopping season. That does make sense.

Tennessee’s Webb School makes iPads mandatory

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 25th, 2011

The iPad is all the rage at a private school in Knoxville, TN, where all students from fourth to 12th grade will now be required to carry iPads starting this August. Hey, it beats a backpack full of spine twisting books. The students can either provide their own tablet or lease a WiFi-only model for $20 a month.

Webb School hopes that the iPad will eventually replace traditional textbooks. We aren’t sure how effective an iPad only classroom can be, but I guess we will all find out soon enough.
