E3 2009 was a hit and show dates for next year announced

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on June 5th, 2009

e32009-sbBack in 2007, I went to E3 for the first time and it was a horrible show. I could have seen more new video games standing in the Best Buy game isle than were on display that year. Thankfully, E3 went back to the much larger format for 2009 that it used years ago and it seems the show was a success again.

According to the Entertainment Software Association, the group that puts on the E3 Expo each year, 2009 was a success. The show had over 41,000 attendees from 78 different countries and had 216 exhibitors. The best news was that the booth babes were back at the show this year.

Today E3 was seriously rocked by Beatles Rock Band as they unleashed the awesomness that is the fab four upon the world. Turns out that you will be able to perform multiple vocals (harmonies). Harmonix showed off what you can expect in the game.

The Beatles: Rock Band will be released simultaneously for XBox 360, PS3 and the Wii in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and other territories. The trailer above is pretty awesome for Beatles fans.

Game On game console storage solution debuts

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on June 1st, 2009

gameon-sbI have several game consoles in my home and between the PS3, Wii, and Xbox my entertainment center is very cluttered. My kids always leave games lying around and controllers everywhere because there isn’t much room to put things up and they are little slobs.

Cambre Products has announced a new game console storage solution that will work with any console system called the Game On. The storage system can be hung on a wall and has an upper shelf that holds video games and a lower shelf designed to hold the console.

Guitar Hero 5 arrives September 1stThat’s right. The latest volume of Guitar Hero is nearly ready to hit the streets. So unpack your plastic guitar (We’re assuming you are sick of those old songs by now.) and get ready to rock. Guitar Hero 5 arrives on September 1st.

There are a bunch of features like the ability to play through sets with no players actively playing, so anyone to join in at any time. But you have some hard choices to make. The release date comes one week before The Beatles: Rock Band. Decisions, decisions.

THQ to launch next gen online shooter called CrimeCraft

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 29th, 2009

crimecraft-sbI have played my share of MMORPG games. I tried World of Warcraft a few times, but the fantasy game isn’t my favorite genre and I just didn’t get into the game that much. I have often wished for a good MMO shooter, obviously PlanetSide doesn’t count.

THQ has announced that it will be launching a new MMO shooter called CrimeCraft. The game is set for pre-order in stores on June 7. CrimeCraft is a game that allows players to found their own gang and fight to destroy rival gangs.

Ultimate DJ controller from Numark

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on May 27th, 2009

Ultimate DJ controller from NumarkWe’ve seen DJ Hero’s turntable/controller, so here’s the controller from The Ultimate DJ . It looks just like we saw in the screenshot.

It’s a free-spinning, touch-sensitive turntable to the left with five Akai Pro MPC-style drum pad triggers next to a cross-fader. Looks like you’ll be able to upload your own samples with a compatible USB mic as well as use the preloaded ones and you can rotate the mixer to the left if you are a lefty.

Rockstar announces new DLC for GTA IV

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 27th, 2009

gtaiv-sbOne of the biggest games available on any gaming system is Grand Theft Auto. The franchise has proven to be one of the top game franchises going. The game has raised more than a bit of ire in the industry as groups claim it is too violent and promotes violence in the real world. Despite some opinions, the game is still one of the most successful around.

Rockstar has announced new DLC for GTA IV that is Xbox 360 exclusive. The new content is called Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony. This is the second episode in the Episodes from Liberty City expansion and will launch this fall.

Tony Hawk: Ride game gets ship date

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 26th, 2009

tonyhawkride-sbWe have talked about the coming Tony Hawk: Ride video game that includes the skateboard controller. I’m not much for real skateboarding, but I might check out the video game. The controller looks pretty slick, assuming it is easier than say controlling a skateboard on a Wii game using the balance board.

GameStop has announced the ship date for the game if you are looking forward to getting your own copy. The game and the skateboard controller will ship on October 13. The big drawback is the bundle is very expensive.

Mattel Mindflex Mind Control Game available for Pre-order

Mattel Mindflex Mind Control Game available for Pre-orderThe hottest new toy trend for 2009 has nothing to do with video games. It’s all about mind control games. The Mattel Mindflex game was introduced at CES 2009 and then got some larger exposure at Toy Fair 2009.

The game turns you into a Jedi, as you levitate a small ball with the power of your mind. The headset contains sensors that measure your brainwave activity, so that when you focus your concentration, a small foam ball starts to levitate as the sensor signal controls an air stream in the Mindflex base.

Castrade Game Box Converter upscales consoles to any monitor

Castrade Game Box Converter upscales consoles to any monitorConnecting your console to your LCD monitor can be a pain with expensive adapters and such, but Castrade’s Game Box makes the process easy. The device accepts video input from your Wii, PS3, or pretty much anything else that uses a common video cable, and properly scales it to an LCD-friendly resolution.

It prevents your console from reverting to a low-quality video mode just because your monitor doesn’t support the specific 1080i or 720p video setting it expects. It also accepts audio inputs from a few proprietary console connectors and sends them out through a 3.5mm jack.

Hybrid Watchmen PS3 game offers movie and game in one

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 22nd, 2009

watchmengame-sbWhen the Watchmen movie came out a few months ago, I rushed to the theater to see it. After watching a few minutes of blue wanger flapping around on screen I decided that the film wasn’t for me. Hopefully the video game will have less smurfy penis as part of the plot line. A powerful superhero should be able to afford underwear.

Warner Brothers has announced a new hybrid offering for the PS3. A single disc will offer fans of the franchise the Watchmen film and the Watchmen: The End is Neigh video game based on the film. The film itself will be a HD Blu-ray title.

GameSpot picks most anticipated titles for E3 2009

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 22nd, 2009

assassinscreed2I always wanted to go to E3 when it was a monster event with all the games and girls you could shake a controller at. In 2007, I finally got a chance to go and that was the first year of the much smaller show. It sucked and I was disappointed. This year E3 is supposed to be big again, wish I could go.

GameSpot will be there though and the company has picked its most anticipated games of the show, and the deck is stacked. Among the anticipated titles are Assassins Creed II, Dante’s Inferno, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Forza Motorsport 3, Deus Ex 3, and many more.

Pirates and Ninjas battle in dodgeball smack down

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 20th, 2009

dodgeball-sbI have fond memories of dodge ball games form my elementary school days. You could always tell who was good at the game by the looks on their face when the coach rolled out that metal rack with all the red plastic balls on it. A smile and a woot meant watch out, a frown and a look of terror meant dodge ball fodder.

A game that pits pirates and ninjas in a dodge ball death match is now available for the Nintendo Wii. The game is called Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball. If pirates and ninjas don’t float your boat, you can also play as a team of zombies, aliens, robots, monsters, or mushroom men.

NASCAR sanctioned online racing series launches in 2010

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 20th, 2009

nascarirace-sbI am a big car guy. I love cars, specifically sports, muscle and exotic cars. Car racing is cool; I used to race autocross and loved it. What I can’t watch for long is NASCAR. I get really bored watching cars going around in circles for hours.

NASCAR is one of the most popular sports in America though and has fans all over the country. NASCAR announced a new sanctioned online racing series today in conjunction with iRacing that will let fans race against each other and against some of their favorite NASCAR drivers starting in 2010.
