Baguni Washing Machine washes entire laundry baskets

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on January 13th, 2009

Baguni Washing Machine washes entire laundry basketsThis Baguni washing machine concept saves a single step in the laundry process, the step where you empty your clothes basket into the washing machine. I’ll be honest, I never realized what a huge problem this was. Apparently it’s a serious issue to actually transfer clothes from the basket to the washer.

You still have to unload the washing machine when the cycle’s done and put your wet clothes into the dryer after, but hey this washer will probably save you a whole 30 seconds, while keeping the clothes capacity of the machine very small. So, this concept is good in theory, not in practice.

Disposable pre-paid wrist phone

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2009

Disposable pre-paid wrist phoneIn these troubled times, you don’t want a super expensive phone with all the bells and whistles… Okay, you do, but for a moment let’s just pretend. The Disposable Pre-Paid Phone concept is one of the most basic handsets you could hope to find. The idea is that it would be affordable enough for anyone to purchase for use in an emergency situation.

Which makes sense. You would want a portable phone you can wear it around your wrist, for Dick Tracy type emergencies. How billing would work is anybody’s guess. But it looks great in Wii-white. No alphanumeric keypad here, which is lame. Sometimes in an emergency, sending text messages is a good idea.

Intelligent Cash Registers concept

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on January 10th, 2009

Intelligent Cash Registers conceptYou knew it was coming. They’ve been dumb for too long. But it makes perfect sense for cash registers to get an IQ upgrade soon, and that’s what the Intelligent Cash Registers concept is all about. They are supposed to remember who you are know what your interests are.

Intel is going to release a prototype at the National Retail Federation show in New York on Sunday. It’s actually a collaboration between Intel and Frog Design. Frog Design will handle the hardware end, making sure its 3″ touchscreen terminal functions with Intel’s latest processors. The device will feature RFID card compatibility and rely on the Internet to up-sell and appeal to your impulse buying.

The Ziplamp: Unzip for some light

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 31st, 2008

The Ziplamp: Unzip for some lightThe Ziplamp by Merry Design Studio is an ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styren) light stick hiding inside in a neoprene cover. To turn on the Ziplamp, just… Well, unzip the cover until you have the desired amount of light. It’s a pretty nifty, almost organic looking looking way of using lighting. I don’t see why it couldn’t be incorporated directly into the wall, or the roof of a car for that matter.

The Ziplamp almost seems a bit sexual given it’s unzipping nature. They should probably have a miniature version you can put under your clothes. That way you can wow the ladies and they’ll tell all their girlfriends that you were so amazing you exuded light from your privates. That’s a ringing endorsement.

Climbing UP Suitcase eases your burden

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 30th, 2008

Climbing UP Suitcase eases your burdenThough it’s just a concept for the moment, the Climbing UP suitcase designed by Woo Moonhyung makes dragging your suitcase around much easier. Especially on uneven surfaces or up stairs. Most suitcases use just a single set of wheels on the bottom, but not the Climbing UP suitcase. Instead, it has rubber belt tracks like a tank, along the length of it’s body.

It makes it much easier to pull your suitcase up stairs, and with the track along it’s entire length, it’s easier to handle from either side. It’s not motorized, but the design doesn’t add much weight. It just adds that extra little nudge to help you get a bit of a break.

The iPhone ELITE

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 29th, 2008

The iPhone ELITEThis one isn’t rumored to surface at all and we don’t expect to see it at MacWorld 2009. It should arrive eventually though, just because it is well thought out and just makes sense. This concept was born because Mat Brady wants to get rid of his Nokia N95 but won’t buy an iPhone due to the lack of a physical keyboard, no good camera, and not enough storage.

Mat’s concept is called the iPhone Elite. It’s an iPhone with 60GB of storage, true 16:9 aspect ratio, slide-out keyboard, one megapixel front camera for iChat, and another high quality camera, with better lenses, optical zoom, and video capability.

Nokia Gun cell phone

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 26th, 2008

Nokia Gun cell phoneThe above picture is just a concept for the moment. Seems like it would be a great redneck device for those creeping around in the backwoods of some southern state. “Hey Cletus. I just shot something.” “Dag nabbit! What’d ya shoot? Did you tie it to a tree and make it squeal like a pig yet?”. Thankfully it doesn’t exist, so that conversation will never be uttered into it.

However, this gun-inspired Nokia phone concept may come in handy for military and law enforcement. Unless it leads to accidental shootings while talking, which it surely would. I would hope the display shows a remaining bullet count as well as phone info.

Clamshell Mouse concept is no Arc Mouse

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 22nd, 2008

Clamshell Mouse concept is no Arc MouseWe’ve seen the Arc Mouse and until now it’s been one of a kind. Check out this design by Shaun haugh. This computer mouse is based on the Arc’s design, but manages to be different at the same time, in the final shape as well as finish.

This clamshell mouse has a steep arc which would make gripping it either harder or easier, I’m not sure which. The mouse is made of a silica gel like soft material and has metal supports for positioning, works on AA batteries with two steel buttons that lock and unlock the support rods.

Grow plants with no soil

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 21st, 2008

Grow plants with no soilIt’s the 21st century. Who wants to grow plants in soil? We don’t need to get our hands dirty. You don’t want to soil yourself. That’s why aeroponics is the future. Dirt is history when we can use specially formulated nutrient mists to replace it. This Broto Domestic Greenhouse lets you use aeroponics to grow plants, and it will babysit them too, constantly checking the pH, temperature, nutrients, and humidity to make sure they grow as healthily as possible.

No dirt. Well yeah, soil has been doing a fine job for millions of years, but as humans, it’s our job to find a better way. It’s clean. And dirt isn’t everywhere you know.

PSC: Playstation Compact camera

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 18th, 2008

Playstation Compact cameraEveryone has been waiting on news of some magical PSP phone from Sony. It may be awhile, so in the meantime, Petros Stambolis has gone ahead and designed a new Playstation Compact, a digital camera that looks like a PSP was cut in half.

Sony should probably consider making this one, though I’m not sure how it would go over. It has some pretty nice features. The PSC (Playstation Compact) implements the Digital Living Network that allows you to share photos, videos as well as sharing real time screen time with a PSP. Pretty interesting even if it does look chopped in half.

Strange Panasonic gel remote

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2008

Strange Panasonic gel remoteThis may be the strangest remote control we’ve ever seen. With the push of a button, this remote becomes rigid and ready for use. Umm, ok. Just what was Panasonic thinking when they designed this one?

When it’s not in use, this concept remote just sort of lays there limp, pulsating with light. But when you touch it, the remote gets excited and becomes rigid. Rigid and ready to be used in a wide variety of ways, that I won’t go into here. My guess is that some other company will market stiffness pills for it, so it can remain rigid longer and if it’s rigid for more then four hours, you’ll have to call for help.

Hourglass Lantern replaces sand with LED light

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 15th, 2008

Hourglass Lantern replaces sand with LED lightThis is a fairly interesting lantern concept from designer Young Bok Kim. It puts a modern spin on the hourglass by draining the light from LEDs instead of using sand. While conspiracy theorists will no doubt say that the ancient Egyptians already had such technology, no they did not, get a grip and throw out your series of Paranormal Time-Life books.

If you adjust the dial in the center, you can control how fast the light “drains” from top to bottom. I’m not sure it would be all that practical as it looks like it would be hard to tell tell how full the bottom is getting.

Pumpboard: A folding, portable Skateboard

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 14th, 2008

Pumpboard: A folding, portable SkateboardThis skateboard concept looks great in design and is still portable enough so that you can carry it around. That’s what this Pumpboard concept is offering. It was designed by Maciej Puzon.

The idea behind this one is that the skateboard can be folded and stashed away when you’re not using it. When you need it, just pump it back up. I imagine it might be a bit of a pain to keep folding and then re-pumping your board though. It’s still a concept at this stage, but who knows. It does have good looks if nothing else.

GettaGrip Musclephone wants to pump you up

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 12th, 2008

GettaGrip Musclephone wants to pump you upWhat you see above may or may not be real. But it certainly is ugly. It’s a phone for those of us who want to build muscles and always have a charged battery as a result. The idea is that by squeezing the grips that surround the unit like so much Charmin, you’d not only work on strengthening your finger muscles, but a forty second squeeze would charge the phone enough for use. They recommend twenty seconds for each hand.

Gimmick? You’re soaking in it. Other than that nonsense, which will have you breaking bones with each handshake, it’s a pretty simple, fugly yellow phone.

Speed Bumps that flatten at low speeds

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 11th, 2008

Speed Bumps that flatten at low speedsHere’s an interesting concept in speed bump design. This speed bump flattens out when you cross over it at low speeds. The idea behind it is that it would reward careful slow drivers who cross over it at speeds below 15mph by giving them smooth ride over the speed bump.

Those who are speed demons will get hit with the bump and really feel it. Drivers traveling at safe speeds can drive right over the speed bump without having to slow down at all. Very clever. That should help keep everyone safe. The downside is that it forces everyone to slow down. People are speeding because they hate slow. Slow is slow.
