Morfojet armchair is not your grandpa’s La-z-boy

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on April 10th, 2009

Morfojet armchair is not your grandpa's La-z-boyWhy park your afterburners in an ordinary chair when you can sit still and look like you are flying in this thing? In case it wasn’t obvious, designer Gianni Pedone based the Morfojet chair on a pair of jet turbines.

It doesn’t just look sweet, the Morfojet also has a built-in CD player and speakers. It’s so awesome that a pair of aviator goggles should be required just to sit in it. When you’ve got turbines as arm rests, that says power. But why did they not put giant speakers in the turbines? That would have completed it nicely.

Customizable car designs

Customizable car designsWe customize many things in our lives, whether it’s faceplates for phones or skins for computers. But cars haven’t been all that customizable. At least there’s been no easy way to do it. Sure, in the 80s people were putting bras on their cars. Sickos. And you can see some awesome paint jobs, but those are permanent.

This concept is all about the car’s surface displaying an image. We’re talking your car as a giant display. There would be many templates available for various car models, plus you’ll be able to make some yourself. Your car’s design can be updated wirelessly and even shared on the web. We’ll likely never see it since it would make bank robberies easier for the getaway car.

REFRESH-N-REMIND shower monitor

REFRESH-N-REMIND shower monitorA group of designers have come up with a new gadget that allows you to keep track of how much water you waste while showering. The concept consists of three devices working together. The REFRESH-N-REMIND shower monitor, REDUCE-YOUR-USE mat and the RELAX-N-REUSE seat.

It reminds me of a Wii accessory if Nintendo made shower related games. With the REDUCE-YOUR-USE mat, the water turns off when you back away. The RELAX-N-REUSE seat lets you sit while you shave and collects water to be re-used watering plants etc. The REFRESH-N-REMIND monitor will clue you in on how much water you are using.

Samsung Clover phone conceptIf the Samsung Clover ever becomes available to the masses, it will sell like hot cakes. It’s highly customizable with a four module interface that allow it to be upgraded to keep up with the latest in technology. The modules consist of vision, location, sound and sensor, and can be added onto by developers or independently.

It’s also made from recycled materials, so it is eco-friendly for those who care about the environment. The back of the phone features PLCD that transforms from opaque to transparent, depending on the current intensity of the battery level. One thing is for sure, it’s a looker.

Nokia E97 concept phone looks awesome

NokiaSexy, slim and sleek. This concept Nokia E97 by Fabien Nauroy gives new meaning to those words. It’s full of incredible attention to detail. The concept has a full keyboard in the “AZERTY” layout, with a small LCD screen just above the keyboard.

The most interesting part is the pull-out LED screen that can operate as a storage device, and make file and picture sharing a bit retro to balance out the modern. The idea is that you pull out a picture or a webpage and pass it around the old fashioned way.

UpCart turns shopping carts into rolling trees

UpCart turns shopping carts into rolling treesWe’ve seen a surprising amount of shopping cart inspired design here at the “Brick. Sometimes artists turn them into furniture, other times it’s more about real world grocery store innovation, like the design above. And let’s face it, the shopping cart needs an overhaul.

With the UpCart, shoppers could use their carts like a storage system. Put your heavy items near the bottom, lighter items on top. The design makes a lot of sense. The bins can be easily moved around in any position for easy access. This cart may even help prevent traffic jams on aisle four. Maybe.

Moxia Sphere interface

Moxia Sphere interfaceThe Moxia sphere is a folding multitouch display with an always-on internet connection and gyroscopic elements that can also be used folded flat. It will be able to display the world, browse web pages or control interactive games. All in a device about the size of an apple.

The device can be recharged by opening one of the petals and can also display an interactive world map like Google Earth. It sounds very promising, but will likely be a while in coming.

Garbage Can keeps your trash chilled so it won’t stink

Garbage Can keeps your trash chilled so it won't stinkDeath and taxes aren’t the only certainties in life. Another one is that garbage does and always will stink. It’s all that organic stuff, like banana peels, coffee grounds, apple cores and stuff. At room temperature, it’s just a stink factory. But if you freeze it…

Now you’re seeing the brilliance of this concept. The Minus Frozen Garbage Container is designed to keep the smell down by keeping your garbage at below-freezing points, where they don’t rot. There’s always the option of perfumed bags, or taking your trash out more, but screw that. Freezing stuff is better.

Laptop concepts aimed at women

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2009

Laptop concepts aimed at womenNikita Buyanov made a bunch of concept laptops for HP-Intel, custom made specifically for women. The laptops come with a range of interesting features, aimed at the fairer sex. There’s some crazy stuff. Like laptops that double as weighing machines, some that carry makeup, with features like mirror mode and a built-in on-nail printing device. The Chameleon, for instance, changes color to blend with its surroundings.

The one that would likely be most offensive to women is pictured above, HP Makeup. It’s obscenely pink and if you press the big button, the screen will change to mirror mode so they can apply makeup. It also has an on-nail printing device.

Sony MP3 concept for all ages

Sony MP3 concept for all agesThe latest conceptual Sony MP3 player by Damien Crossan looks like a warped Wii nunchuk. It features a simplified interface with keys that are clearly laid out and raised. The high contrast screen features light text on a dark background, making it easy to read. Available in 4GB to 8 GB of storage space, the gadget also features FM radio.

This Sony MP3 concept would target the older generation who enjoy portable music but have a hard time with new devices due to stiff fingers, poor vision and complicated interfaces. If this one ever sees the light of day, retirement homes will never be the same.

6 speaker set folds into a cube

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2009

6 speaker set folds into a cubeDesigner Ji-Hyung Jung is pretty clever as illustrated by this interesting mobile speaker set design. The idea is that you have a cube held together by magnets, that is actually 5 speakers and a sub-woofer.

The whole deal looks pretty sweet once the pieces are out and displayed. And if you want to take them with you, they take up much less room than typical speakers. The volume control is on the top of the sub-woofer. It’s just a concept for the moment, but it’s a great one.

Mercury Skates make in-line skating smoooooth

Mercury Skates make in-line skating smooooothI have seen the future of skates and its name is Mercury. It’s finally skating weather for those of you who enjoy it, but all that vibration due to crappy roads and sidewalks takes away from the experience, doesn’t it?

Maybe designer Pouyan Mokhtarani will make it a more pleasant experience with these skates that look like they are still scorching hot due to arriving from the future. Springs and airbags in the shoes could make skating feel as smooth as ice skating. Judging by the looks of these skates, skating may even be like flying.

The E-Pod iPod dock

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 17th, 2009

The E-Pod iPod dockThe latest conceptual iPod dock is called the E-Pod Dock and has a lot of functionality. It’s compatible with your iPhone, iPod touch and iPod classic and functions as a speaker, movie projector and an alarm clock.

Forget its compact size, it will offer you quality hi-fidelity audio. Quite a device. As long as we’re dreaming, how about if it tweets everything you are watching and listening to. One thing is for sure, it would look good on any late night talk show host’s desk.

Stopper postcard measures Postal delivery speed

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2009

Stopper postcard measures Postal delivery speedThe Postal service better step up their game with gadget concepts like this one on the loose. The Stopper Postcard measures how long it takes that postcard to get from point A to point B. So, now postal workers have something else to stress out about. It’s a constant reminder of how far behind they are on any given day. Let’s hope it doesn’t push some of them over the edge.

My one question is this: How long does it count? I, like many of you have mailed things and have waited for things that have apparently been swallowed by a black hole. So, if you never receive a package, is it still counting the days up to infinity?

Alarm clock wakes you up with a nice breakfast

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2009

Alarm clock wakes you up with a nice breakfastAlarm clocks are noisy because noise is the one thing you can’t stand in the morning. It works so good that the alarm has remained basically the same for years. What else could possibly entice you to get up and face your day? Maybe you’d be more apt to wake up for a well rounded breakfast.

That’s the thinking behind this French designed alarm clock. Instead of waking aggravated and hitting the snooze button, you’ll wake up to a glass of OJ. Just set the alarm, choose your breakfast and go to sleep. When you wake up, you’ll have a breakfast all ready for you.
