I’ve mentioned before that I like GPS devices. However, when the maps start to get out of date or there is heavy road construction in your area that was recently completed it can leave the maps inside the system lacking. There is nothing worse than having your GPS tell you to take a route that has roads that no longer exist.

TomTom has announced a new service called the Map Update Service that allows customers to get quarterly map updates for a year. The price of the service is $39.80 for four updates per year or $9.95 per individual update.

GPS products company TomTom is getting set to make available its first ONE XL device to feature text-to-speech for spoken street names. The new TomTom ONE XL-S will be priced at around $400.

The TomTom ONE XL-S will allow for street names to be told to it as part of providing driving directions. It will also work with TomTom’s MapShare technology, which lets one share map improvements made on the GPS unit and later uploaded to an online community. The ONE XL-S provides a touchscreen interface built into a 4.3-inch screen.

Tom Tom said today it has updated its popular ONE portable navigation device and is now calling it the ONE 3rd Edition. This new spin on Tom Tom’s best selling GPS unit is priced at around $250 and should be available now.

The Tom Tom ONE 3rd Edition has a lightweight design and sports a 3.5-inch color TFT LCD touchscreen. It features what is being called an enhanced user interface and includes the ability to let users mark changes on maps displayed on the GPS unit for later uploading to a community Web site for sharing with other Tom Tom users. These updated maps can be downloaded by others for use on their travels.

TomTom has a new navigation gadget out which has brought a new community-based feature to the market called Map Share. The TomTom GO 720 has a lot of the cool features commonly found in portable navigation units plus a little more.

Finding accurate data on routes in obscure areas is getting better all the time, but there are always those new areas of town or those “roads less traveled” where the navigation software voice seems proud to tell you that they have “incomplete data”. The Map Share technology available on the GO 720 (and the new GO 520) allows you to map these new or desolate areas for yourself to use the next time you travel them. TomTom Navigator 6 is a software and hardware package that you can use with your existing smartphone or PDA. At first glance it may look as though this is another TomTom GPS device, but it is actually the navigational software and a wireless GPS receiver to integrate with your existing phone or PDA.
The software comes preloaded on a mini SD memory card with your country map and cross border navigation to anywhere in Europe. The wireless Bluetooth GPS receiver is the only actual significant piece of hardware. This is a pretty small device, but in some cases it may be actually bigger than your smart device your hooking it up to. This is to receive the GPS signal and transfer it to your handheld device. A car and A/C adapter also come with the TomTom Navigator 6 software.

The TomTom GO 910 is a gadget that has more features pound for pound than most other gadgets I have seen. By trade I would say that TomTom is a GPS but it has a surprisingly large number of features that you might not expect, but make perfect sense once you see it.
