Samsung Galaxy Player 4 and 5 to arrive in the US this spring

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on March 16th, 2011

Remember the Galaxy Player? (otherwise known as Galaxy S WiFi). It’s basically a Galaxy S phone without the 3G and calling functionality. You still get Android 2.2 and what you have is a media player or shrunken tablet.

Well, both the 4-inch Galaxy Player 4 and the 5-inch Galaxy Player 5 will be headed to the US this spring. Samsung isn’t talking exact timing or pricing yet though. This player is upgradable to Android 2.3, with full Market access and will be headed to the US sometime soon.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 to launch at CTIA

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on February 28th, 2011

Samsung is getting ready to launch its 8.9″ Tablet and so the company is sending out invitations to the CTIA media. As you can see on the invite, the number 78910 is displayed and we take that to mean 7″ 8.9″ and 10″, the whole Samsung Tab line up.

Speculation is that the Samsung 8.9″ Tablet will use Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Not sure if it will have Tegra 2, or Samsung’s own chip. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 uses a Tegra 2, but Samsung also produces its own system on a chip (SoC).

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on February 24th, 2011

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G just became available today and if you are wondering what makes this phone tick, we now have a gadget autopsy that reveals all, thanks as usual to the folks over at iFixit, who have given it the standard teardown.

They tore it apart piece by piece, lovingly describing the process and every component. Just for you, you morbid people. This time they even used fire to conduct an experiment to determine the material of the main structural plate inside the phone. Spoiler: It’s made from aluminum.

The Galaxy S support team has announced via Twitter that the Samsung Captivate on AT&T will get the long overdue upgrade to Android 2.2 on Thursday. The updates will begin to be sent out over the air on Thursday, but not all handsets will get it at the same time, expect it to take several days.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to stream live broadcasts from Smart TVs

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on February 23rd, 2011

Owners of Samsung’s latest Smart TVs will be able to stream live TV shows to compatible tablets or mobile phones. Both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Samsung Galaxy S II will be able to make use of the televisions’ second tuner, turning them into second sets to watch in your home.

We don’t have much in the way of specs right now, but of course the new service won’t work on every TV that the company offers , just the upcoming D7000 and D8000 ranges. We also aren’t sure if it will work with the company’s older phones.

Samsung hopes to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year, LG 5 million

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on February 19th, 2011

You and I have simple dreams. Pay the bills, take care of kids, watch some good TV, maybe go out and have fun once in a while. Folks like Samsung have bigger hopes and dreams, like wanting to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year. That would be up five times from the two million it sold last year, so the goal is ambitious.

LG is keeping it more real, planning to sell 5 million or so. We are guessing they won’t reach these numbers as a result of consumer demand for 3D, but more likely because almost all new TVs will be 3D-capable. In the end, they don’t care how they do it, as long as they have the sales and the bragging rights.

Samsung launching Galaxy S II Tegra 2 version?

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on February 17th, 2011

Looks like Samsung may be getting ready to launch a Tegra 2-based version of the Galaxy S II smartphone, for select markets. There are some good reasons to suspect that this is the case. The company has been collaborating with NVIDIA to create a new handset based on Tegra 2, and yet the Galaxy S II was the main focus of its Mobile World Congress unveilings.

Samsung hasn’t officially said that this is the case and the MWC version uses the company’s own dual-core Exynos SoC, but the official specs lists the Samsung SoC as a feature that “may not be applicable in some regions.” So, putting 2 and 2 together, it looks like there will be a Tegra 2 version.
