Posted in Palm,Smart Devices,Treo 755P by Darrin Olson on May 9th, 2007

Palm Treo 755pPalm has recently released the latest in its ever-slowly-improving lineup of smart devices, this time expanding on the 700 series with the Palm Treo 755p running on the Sprint network.

The Treo 755p is the first Treo that ships equipped with the Microsoft Direct Push technology for email as well as Google Maps for mobile devices. The Google Maps support lets you can not only see maps and satellite photos, but also get directions, see listings local to your area and even get real-time traffic updates. It’s a CDMA device and unfortunately WiFi support is still a lacking nice-to-have that we always look for in a smartphone.

The device does however have support for EvDO (Rev.0), mini-SD card slot supporting up to 4GB cards, a 1.3 megapixel camera that takes stills and video, SMS support for Yahoo, AOL and Gmail, and the ability to watch …

Posted in Palm,Smart Devices,Verizon by Darrin Olson on February 20th, 2007

Palm Treo 700wx now available from Verizon WirelessVerizon and Palm have today announced the availability of the Palm Treo 700wx from Verizon Wireless, which looks to completely brick the Treo 700w.

Sprint has had the Treo 700wx available for some time now and Verizon is finally getting there chance at it. Verizon currently has the older brother 700w, which is basically the same phone minus just the ‘x’ and 32MB of internal RAM. Both its predecessor and the Palm Treo 700wx are available from the Verizon Wireless online store for $399.99 with a two year contract, and with a $100 mail-in rebate the price almost comes close to the $249 that Sprint is offering.

You might begin to think, as did we, that at this rate the new offering from Verizon would have Windows Mobile 6 added into it, but no dice. It does however …

Posted in Cingular,Mobile Phones,News,Palm,Smart Devices by Darrin Olson on January 8th, 2007

Cingular Introduces Palm Treo 750Palm and Cingular introduced the new Palm Treo 750 for Cingular this week, which is now available for customers through Cingular and through Palm’s website. This brings Cingular up into the race with a product in direct competition with the likes of Sprint and Verizon with their Treo 700 line products, and is an addition to the Treo 680 already available from Cingular.

The Treo 750 will have high speed 3G/UMTS network access to provide faster internet access to customers. The UMTS network has speeds from 200-300 kbps, which is not quite as fast as the possible 700kbps with Cingular’s HSDPA service, but it is quicker than the EDGE connections. The 750 is also dubbed a world phone allowing access to GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS networks to give access throughout the US and in 61 other countries around the world.

Opera Mini for Palm BlackberryOpera Mini, which launched in February 2006, has recently released new version of its mobile browser for use on the Palm Treo and BlackBerry mobile devices, with the intention of offering a clean “…no-frills, instant gateway to the World Wide Web on today’s basic line of mobile phones,” according to Rolf Assev who is the Chief Commercial Officer of Opera Software.

Opera Mini is a smaller and more simplified version of the standard Opera browser, and is supposed to offer faster page rendering while using less memory, which in turn means less minutes of air time for the plan subscriber. The mobile version has nothing less than Google as the default page for search. The Opera Mini browser and the Opera 9, which was released in June 206, are available for free download at the Opera site.

The new Treo 680 comes with applications for email, web browsing, messaging, multimedia, calendar, contacts and quite a bit more. The feature set looks quite a bit like the 700p model, exept for the price which is a little less.

Palm is targeting the price savvy who want a more competitive mobile computing device at a more competitive price. With the introduction of this new device Palm plans to reach new users in the growing smartphone and feature-phone markets with the Treo 680.

Palm’s U.S. stores will be offering a GSM version in 4 new colors – crimson, copper, arctic and graphite. For a limited time they will come with a music bundle from Yahoo with a 30-day free trial to its music service.

Palm Treo Adds An X

Posted in Mobile Phones,PDAs,Palm,Smart Devices by Darrin Olson on September 5th, 2006

Palm Treo 700wxPalm has released a new version of the Treo, or at least I think it’s a new version. It looks a lot like the old version to me, but it has an ‘x’ on the end of the name.

One thing that is different for sure, is that you can get this new version through Sprint Nextell instead of the Verizon, which is where you can get the version without the ‘x’.

This new version does have at least one new feature, which is an EvDO high speed connection so that you can use the Treo 700wx as a modem for laptops through a USB connection. It also has double RAM of the 700w, but I think that is it.

Don’t get me wrong, this Treo 700w and Treo 700wx are both awesome smart devices. The both have the Windows Pocket PC OS, 1.3 megapixel …
