LG readies Tablet, Optimus Smartphones

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

Sounds like LG is pretty confident about its soon to be released Android-tablet, due in the fourth quarter of this year. The tablet is branded as part of the Optimus line and will take a different route than the iPad tablet.

Instead of focusing on consumption, entertainment, and multimedia, LG will be gearing its tablet toward productivity. LG’s vice president of marketing for mobile devices Chang Ma says so. “Our tablet will be better than the iPad.” He says, “It’s going to be surprisingly productive.”

LG to reveal 31-inch OLED panel

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on August 19th, 2010

LG is already the record holder for the largest production OLED model, but they aren’t content with it so next month, they will break their own record and double that size to 31-inches, showing it off on the showfloor of the IFA electronics show in Germany.

Samsung showed off a 31-inch OLED of their own a few years ago, but that one never made it to the market, so if LG’s does, they are the king of OLED panels.

Given the timing, it looks like LG wants to position themselves for a prosperous holiday shopping season. Assuming it is a worldwide launch anyway. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

LG Mobile App Store to open in 23 Markets

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on July 28th, 2010

LG actually launched their mobile application store a while back, but now the company has updated the store, expanding it to 23 countries. Places like Australia, India, South Africa, and 20 others. There are over 3,000 apps in the store, which are available for feature phones, Windows Mobile phones, with Android applications will expand the library over time.

Looks like a quick peek at the Australian store shows that all apps are free for download, though users are separated into Single, Double, or Triple membership levels. Each level offers users more access to additional apps. Activity points are earned by rating apps, sharing it over email or other methods.

LG to release several Windows Phone 7 handsets in 2010

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on July 28th, 2010

Once again an LG representative has confirmed that a Windows Phone 7-powered handset is on the way and due in September. That handset is expected to be called the Pacific. The company also said that more WP7 devices are coming before year’s end.

LG is the third largest cellphone maker, behind Nokia and Samsung. Its phone shipments are slowly increasing, but it has fallen into losses due to a lack of smartphones, which has allowed Apple, RIM and other companies to grow much faster. Most of LG’s efforts this past year have focused on Android with only small efforts spent on Windows Mobile.

LG finally ready for 3D

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on July 12th, 2010

LG is finally preparing to make a really big push into the 3D market as it has started to offer its first Blu-ray 3D players and 3D TVs, and even putting both together into 3D bundles. They recently rolled out the Infinia LX6500 47″ LED TV along with the LX9500 55″ LED TV, which are its first 3D-ready TVs.

To compliment these new TVs, LG is rolling out its first Blu-ray player that can handle Blu-ray 3D movies. The 3D active shutter glasses will cost extra. LG will even give a $100 discount if you pick up a 3D TV, 3D Blu-ray player and two pairs of activate shutter glasses. Not that that helps much.

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on May 5th, 2010

The LG Ally was recently acknowledged to actually exist, but aside from that, we knew very little. Well, now the phone has it’s own page on the company’s website, which is also a nice little commercial for Iron Man 2.

Aside from pimping out Tony Stark and his technicolor armored geek suit, it gives us some info. The device has a 3.2-inch touchscreen, Android 2.1, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, backside camera and a microSD card slot.

LG Aloha to be called Ally for Verizon

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on May 2nd, 2010

We have news that the LG LU2300 Aloha handset headed for Verizon in May will be called the Ally instead, which is not nearly as catchy of a name. The mid-May release is on track and the specs will be the same, with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen with 480×800 resolution and Android 2.1.

Some other specs include a QWERTY keyboard, 5-megapixel camera and support for 720p video playback. Pricing for the device remains a mystery. Maybe this one is up your ally.
