HP eStation Zeen spotted by the FCC

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on August 5th, 2010

Look what the FCC recently got a look at. The eStation Zeen just might be the mystery tablet to be released by HP soon. It’s been about eight months since HP filed for the “Zeen” trademark on a “portable handheld device”, and then there’s their recent buyout of Palm as well, so it looks like this is it.

This tablet should compete nicely with the rest of the tablets on the market. We know that it will have Wi-Fi N connectivity, but that’s about all we do know at the moment thanks to a short-term confidentiality request until December 31st.

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on July 15th, 2010

If you had your heart set on a new tablet from HP running the Android OS, we have bad news for you. The tablet was expected to land in Q4 2010, but reports are coming in that say the project has been postponed.

AllThingsD reports that sources have told it that the launch has been postponed and there are no hints on exactly how long the postponing will last. Considering Android and WebOS, which HP paid a pretty penny for, are direct competitors the move is not surprising.

HP set to offer printers with email addresses

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on June 7th, 2010

HP purchased Palm not too long ago as a way to get its hands on webOS. Shortly after the purchase was finished, we learned that HP had bigger plans than smartphones for webOS with an eye towards devices like web connected printers and tablets.

I thought webOS in a printer sounded weird at first. The New York Times reports today that HP will have a new line of web-connected printers that will have their own email addresses. I would bet several of these will be running webOS.

HP’s new 30″ ZR30w display with over a billion colors

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

HP’s new ZR30w S-IPS LCD display is impressive. It boasts a color resolution of 30-bits per pixel, which means some 1.07 billion displayable colors. That’s about 64 times as many as you can see on an average LCD.

The ZR30w features a 2560 x 1600 resolution, that’s over 4 million pixels. It’s being targeted at small businesses for a price of $1,299. Sadly that just means higher resolution work, while you go home to your not as colorful HDTV.

HP Slate to run Palm WebOS

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on May 24th, 2010

Good news for those who had hoped that HP wouldn’t use Windows 7 in their HP Slate. Instead they will be using their newly acquired Palm WebOS. That’s what Monty Wong, vice-president of personal computing systems at HP Taiwan, said to Digitimes.

The HP Taiwan official said that HP will use WebOS for both smartphones and tablets, but not for notebooks. Also, the HP Slate will hit the market before October, with a “wide range” of software support at launch. What do you think? Good news? Or did you want another OS?

Some HP Envy 15 units shipping with Display and Webcam issues

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on May 21st, 2010

The HP forums are going crazy over the popular Envy 15, because some buyers are receiving models with screens that randomly go blank and/or webcams that only show full color under fluorescent light.

Looks like HP is on it though, offering a full refund or repair. However according to one user, two trips back to HP could not fix his laptop’s webcam. It isn’t all HP Envy units, but 20 pages of complaints on the HP Envy Forum means that something is clearly wrong.

HP says that cows could power server farms

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on May 20th, 2010

The folks over at HP have a special place in their hearts for cow manure. And I’m not talking about their press releases. Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Seriously, HP is into dairy cows now in a big way. They think that they could turn manure into fuel and use it effectively.

With the right equipment, methane can be extracted from the manure and since the average cow makes enough waste per day to power a 100-watt light bulb, if they had 10,000 cows…That’s enough fuel to generate a one-megawatt data center.

HP says WebOS coming to printers

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on May 19th, 2010

The first time I saw those HP web connected printers I wondered what the point was. I just don’t see anyone wanting to look up recipes or print movie tickets from the tiny screen on their printer when they can use the PC nearby more easily.

HP is now saying that it plans on bringing WebOS to its line of web connected printers. I still don’t see the point. I guess at least HP can point to the loot it spent on Palm and say see, we are using WebOS.

HP introduces new entry level Monitors

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on May 14th, 2010

Not everybody can afford the big expensive toys, so HP has some entry level monitors to offer you. HP is planning to launch three new low-priced displays, the 20-inch S2031, 21.5-inch S2231 and the 23-inch S2331. They feature a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, VGA and DVI-D connections, 5ms response time and the use of a two-lamp panel instead of four-lamps, which lowers the power draw.

The S2031 will feature a 1600 x 900 pixel resolution, while the other two models will offer the full 1080p resolution. Pricing for these monitors is $150, $190 and $220.
