Angstrom Power’s G2 portable fuel cell power source

Angstrom Power’s G2 portable fuel cell power source
Apparently, Angstrom Power is not just working on fuel cells for MOTOSLVR L7 prototypes. The company is also touting its G2 portable fuel cell power source that will keep a whole wide range of gadgets charged. It looks like an mp3 player from a mirror universe, but I digress. This one has eight V60 Fuel Cell Modules that all together provide two watts of power. That can be used to top off any device that charges with a USB connection.

Angstrom says that the G2 itself can also be replenished “in minutes,” by using an Angstrom P2 Portable Refueling Cartridge or an R1 Refueling Station, and it can withstand “several charges” before it needs to be refueled. No word on pricing or availability, but it will likely show up before those fuel cell-powered cellphones, which seem to be on track for a release around 2010.

Nintendo DS Lite charging dock

Charging dock for the Nintendo DS LiteFor some reason it just seems nicer to me when I have some type of cradle, dock or stand to charge my gadgets with instead of just a cord and naturally we were excited to see this charging stand for the Nintendo DS Lite. Sure the docks take up more room on my desk and are difficult to take along when you travel, but with them each items has their own neat and special place.

This stand looks to take up a little less space then it could, holding the DS upright on its side instead of flat. It comes in colors of black or white to match the black and white DS’s, and is expected to be available from PlayAsia sometime yet this month for just under $17 USD.

Charge your gadgets with a tree

Charge your gadgets by tree
At NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program Spring 2008 show, graduate students were exhibiting some interesting and unusual projects. Like Oscar G. Torres’s Helios Power Tree, for instance. The leaves are constructed from thin solar cells that are all connected to a battery at the tree’s base from the branches and trunk. The battery uses solar power to charge and powers blue lights around the tree. There are USB outlets on the base.

The idea is that the tree would sit in a public space so that people can use the solar energy that it collects to charge any of their USB-powered gadgets. Money may not grow on trees, same with gadgets, but it turns out that juice to power those gadgets can grow on trees.

Strapya mini solar cell phone charger
Here’s another great gadget for those who are environmentally conscious. The Strapya mini solar cell phone charger is smaller than an iPod, and when it has 6-10 hours of sunlight it becomes a dependable backup power source for your cell phone.

It hooks up to your phone using an adapter and you can get 3 hours of energy. Not only is it useful and environmentally friendly, but the price is not outrageous at about $17.54. So it wont “Strapya” for cash. And hey, sunlight is free.

XtremeMac InCharge Home and InCharge Travel chargers for the iPhone and iPodThe MacWorld 2008 week is just about to come to a close but the new product announcements aren’t quite over yet. XtremeMac, maker of Apple product accessories, has launched the InCharge Home and InCharge Travel as the latest addition to the companies lineup of chargers for the iPhone and iPod. The products bear the “Works with iPhone” and “Made for iPod” brands making them Apple approved, which is something we really like to see anytime we connect something between the wall outlet and our multi-hundred dollar gadgets.

The InCharge Home is basically a $30 wall outlet adapter that will charge your iPhone or iPod without the use of a computer and without the risk of burning it up. XtremeMac says that the InCharge Home will bring your iPod or iPhone to a full charge twice as fast as it will through your computer connection.

Griffin PowerDock is iPod hungry
Griffin has come up with a very handy PowerDock that will simplify the lives of those who have several iPods and iPhones in the house. (Or that crazy guy that has about 10 iPods and uses them all for some reason only he understands.) For now, it just charges the devices, but one can expect more functionality to be added down the road.

The Powerdock will be released in two models: a 4 slot version featured above for $70 in April, and a 2 slot model to come later for $50 in June.

The Solio Magnesium is capable of fully charging a cell phone approximately three times. Vintage iPod tube amp & charger is retro awesome

Vintage iPod tube amp & charger

Here’s a great design if you dare to be different. The Vintage iPod Tube Amp/Charger has the cool somewhat steampunk/Sci-Fi look of a mad scientists lair. According to the manufacturer, you ca enjoy your playlists with the “warmth and richness only a vintage tube amplifier can provide”. I don’t know about that, but I love the design.

Many musicians believe that the harmonic richness and the pure tone of tube-based circuitry can’t be beat. That’s their thinking with this device. Just plug your iPod into the Vintage Amplifier/Charger, sit back with the included remote, and browse through your playlists. They claim that audio details that have been lost in MP3 files through compression, dramatically re-emerge through the 25 watts RMS per channel, all-tube pre-amp system. It will cost you a hefty $800 to find out if they are right. No doubt some of us don’t mind missing out on the differences we can’t hear anyway, at that price.

BodyGard self-powered emergency tool

The BodyGard Self-Powered Emergency Tool is like a high-tech Swiss army knife, without all the knives. Consider it the MacGuyver of emergency tools. You get 12 devices in one, along with a hand crank, so you can generate power when and where you need it, on the spot. Never worry again about your flashlight, MP3 player, cellphone or radio running out of juice.

It also comes with a flashing red light, a panic button for emergencies and a motion-activated security alarm that alerts anyone around you in the event of an emergency. They obviously took advantage of every square inch of the device. It even has an integrated storage compartment for pills, matches and other tiny items.

Visual desktop charger concept radiates light

Visual desktop charger concept

Most desktop chargers suffer from a case of severe ugliness. That’s where this one differs, with a brilliant endearing design by Sun Kyung Kim. It simulates the visual experience of ripples within a bird bath. Sun’s thinking is that humans like to have visual indicators for all things, mobile devices are no exception. Most chargers do not give you any visual indication of charge status, whereas this one will show you radiating rings of light that the indicate the charge status. To top it off, the thirsty birds on the edge glow once the rings of light reach them.

No word yet on when it might be available or pricing, assuming that it ever gets manufactured.

WildCharge charger finally available, for one phone

Posted in Chargers, WildCharge by Reuben Drake on October 18th, 2007

WildCharge wireless charging padThe WildCharge wireless charging pad that we heard about back in June is finally available for purchase. The charge pad uses a custom induction strip attachment that hooks on to your phone (or potentially other devices) and lets you charge it wirelessly by simply setting the device on the WildCharge charge pad.

The idea is great and was met with a lot of enthusiasm from the gadget community when announced, but its taken a while to get here. Shortly after the initial launch announcement of July 7, the company came out with news of pre-orders and then some pricing and a delay.

Belkin iPod TuneBase
The Belkin TuneBase gets a face lift with some welcomed improvements to this FM Transmitter. With ClearScan technology, users won’t have to wait for a stop light to adjust the station for clearer reception, instead the technology automagically finds the clearest station for you.

The button interface has been replaced with an LCD screen displaying the current station. A new Pro mode for improved audio quality and volume boost is integral, and an indicator informs the user when the mode is active.
