Solar Car Battery Charger

Posted in Automotive, Solar Powered by Reuben Drake on March 6th, 2007

Solar car battery charge keeps from getting a dead batteryCar batteries are something that no one wants to let run down. Whether we might use it up fiddling with the GPS system too much or just generally mucking around the car, the towing bill that we will inevitably have to pay just takes all the fun out of it.

ICP Solar has come to the rescue and produced a solar panel that will help to charge your car battery. The new “Sunsei SolarCharger” will keep your car battery charged using energy from the Sun. Naturally the panel must be placed on the dashboard or attached to the windshield. With its ‘Trickle-Down’ feature, the solar panel will never overcharge the 12-volt battery in your car.

This neat little gadget may end up saving you quite a few bucks. We all know that there is nothing more frustrating than coming …

Saab BioPower 100 Concept

Posted in Automotive, News by Paul Patterson on February 15th, 2007

Saab Premieres BioPower 100 Concept at GenevaWe don’t cover a lot of auto news here at the Brick, but I have always liked Saabs and this seemed like a significant automotive innovation. I still miss my beloved Saab 900 which I traded for a VW many years ago.

Saab has developed an E100 fuel concept car that it is premiering at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The Saab BioPower 100 Concept demonstrates the first production-based engine optimized for pure bioethanol (E100) fuel.

Based on the Saab 9-5 SportCombi, the BioPower concept demonstrates the performance possibilities of bioethanol. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine develops 300 hp made possible through modifications to the engine management system and internal components. This allows the BioPower 100 to achieve zero to 100 kph acceleration in 6.6 seconds and 80 - 120 kph (fifth gear) in 8.2 seconds.

Saab has already …

drive+play 2 ipod phone car adapterHarmon Kardon, the company known for audio excellence, has released its updated version of its popular Drive+Play device. Drive+Play 2 provides a nice interface for devices like an iPod or satellite radio. The Drive+Play mimics an iPod down to the interface and button. The remote is a 2.4GHz wireless knob that resembles an iPods scroll wheel.

The 3.5 inch display, which mounts on your dash with either glue or screws (yikes), is meant to resemble an iPod screen. The screen supports regular and large font (for those older drivers). The screen is colored unlike the original which had a gray scale screen.

The “brain” of the system can be wired directly to a car stereo system for a permanent installation. If the user isn’t so sure about permanently grafting the device to their car, they …

GM unveiled an all electric car that draws power from an onboard lithium-ion battery (just like an iPod!). GM calls this concept car “Volt.” GM tried and failed once before with its EV1 hybrid car. GM has improved on the features of the EV1 by increasing the passenger area, increasing the maximum spend and decreasing the charging time for the batteries. The car is unique in that the combustion engine is only used to charge the battery, not for actually propelling the vehicle. The Volt can either …
