Crazy Creepy Telenoid R1 will scare grandpa into a new pair of Depends

Posted in Robots by Shane McGlaun on August 2nd, 2010

Why is it that the Japanese make so many robots and give them the creepiest designs they can find? What happened to robots that looked like robots? I’d be more comfortable talking to Robby the Robot than the creepy ass Telenoid R1.

This robot is so creepy it makes Gene Simmons look like a nice guy. The idea is that the blob-like android would be teleoperated and is the size of a small child and is used by kids to transmit their presence to grandparents and others that are far away.

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on August 2nd, 2010

Corning has been offering Gorilla Glass for years but the stuff has only become common in the mobile market over the last few years. We typically see Gorilla Glass used for smartphone screens like the iPhone 4.

Corning has announced that starting next year Gorilla Glass will find a new market. The glass will be used to protect HDTVs from scratches and breakage. This is great news for Wii players who won’t have to worry as much about killing the TV.

Washing machine beats self to death cleaning a brick

Posted in Humor by Shane McGlaun on August 2nd, 2010

I bet that there are lots of people out there who see something and think man I wonder what would happened if I did this or that. Most of us never really do whatever it is that we are curious about, but there are a few folks who try out their wonders.

A guy has finally answered that question burning in my mind of what would happen if you tossed a brick in the washing machine after you hooked it up to what appears to be a more powerful engine. As the video starts the machine is already smoking and thrashing about with one brick in it.

Xtraordinay Adventures offers budget space flights for rich folk

Posted in Space by Shane McGlaun on July 30th, 2010

I would not think that someone who had $100k to drop on a suborbital space flight would quibble much about an extra few grand or even an extra hundred grand. The folks with the disposable income to take a joy ride into space probably don’t think twice about that kind of money.

A company called Xtraordinary Adventures has announced that it is pre-booking suborbital space flights on its reusable Lynx spacecraft for $95,000. The company points out that its price is $7000 less than Space Adventures and $100,000 less than Virgin Galactic’s price.

Umbrella dryer uses that rainwater to grow plants

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on July 30th, 2010

We don’t have to use umbrellas too often in my area, but when we do the floors in the house and at stores around town are very slippery thanks to all the water. If you live in an area where it rains a lot you will find this concept umbrella stand appealing.

The stand has these long green foam fingers that you slip your umbrella between. Those green foam fingers take the rainwater off your umbrella and use it in a very green way.

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on July 30th, 2010

Back early in June I mentioned that rumors were going around that Redbox would be offering Blu-ray movie rentals for $1.50 per night. Redbox has now come out and made the Blu-ray rentals official.

Redbox has added Blu-ray titles to 13,300 of its kiosks across the country. The company says that all 23,000 of the kiosks will have Blu-ray rentals by the fall. The flicks will rent for $1.50 per night.

Way back in October of last year we talked about the Viper SmartStart app that would let the user unlock and start their car from their iPhone. That app was also available for Blackberry users as well.

Viper has announced this week that the app is now available for Android users. The app has the same features as the app offered on other platforms.

If you are into green, hybrids, and performance cars a new Porsche concept was unveiled a while back that combined all three called the 918 Spyder. That car looked awesome and packed in a very powerful hybrid power train.

The car was powered by a 500hp V8 engine along with a pair of 109hp electric motors fed by lithium ion batteries. Porsche claims that the car would be capable of 78mpg.

Nexus One/Arduino SmallSat blasted 28k feet into air on rocket

Posted in DIY by Shane McGlaun on July 29th, 2010

When I was a kid, I used to build those Estes rocket kits that you could shoot into the air a few hundred feet. I always seemed to get the tail fins crooked and the things would fly all sideways and stuff.

A couple geeks have taken rocketry to the next level and put a SmallSat made up of an Nexus One smartphone and Arduino onto the back of a big rocket dubbed intimidator-5 and blasted the thing into the sky. The project was followed by Make for its DIY Space issue.

Proximity charger for EVs debuts from Evatran

Posted in Automotive by Shane McGlaun on July 29th, 2010

I am sure that we have all forgot to put gas in our car at one time or another and gone out to go somewhere and realized we didn’t have enough gas. That is easy enough to fix in a gas powered car, you just go the station and fill up.

If you are driving an EV and realize you forgot to plug it in, you are out of luck. I know if I had a car that needed to be plugged in each night I would forget to do that eventually. A company called Evatran has announced a cool new proximity charger for EVs.

OWC offers more RAM for buyers of new iMac

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on July 29th, 2010

Every time I look at computers on a manufacturer’s site, I get a little sick to my stomach when I see how much they want to charge you for RAM and HDD upgrades. Sometimes even a small upgrade can add a $100 or more to the price you pay.

If you tend to buy your rigs with the minimum RAM available and upgrade alter you aren’t alone. OWC has announced that it has new RAM kits put together specifically for the newly updated iMac computers.

You have to live under a rock to not know about the issues that iPhone 4 users are having with the antenna on the new smartphone. Apple has admitted there is an issue and has offered up free cases for users to fix the issue.

Apple is even refunding users that bought the bumper case with their smartphone. Motorola is taking the chance to make fun of the iPhone 4 and its need for a case in its new ad for the Droid X.

Sharp makes new LR388G9 LCD controller chip that controls dual screens

Posted in Sharp by Shane McGlaun on July 28th, 2010

I have seen more than one device over the last year that has a pair of touchscreens rather than a touchscreen and a keyboard. The devices are mostly concepts and the reason for that is that there isn’t a lot of support with hardware for dual screens in one device.

Sharp has unveiled a new chip that controls LCD screens on mobile devices called the LR388G9. This chip can control two displays at once with resolution up to 1024 x 480 on each screen. The chip also supports 1080p output via HDMI.

Piss on Apple with cool android t-shirt

Posted in clothing by Shane McGlaun on July 28th, 2010

Yeah I have wanted to kill my iPhone on a few occasions by hurling it at Steve Jobs’ testes. I really like the phone, but the thing can be frustrating at times, especially when the battery goes dead after half a day’s use.

I bet there are scores of Android fans out there who would heartily say piss on Apple. If you are one of this cadre of Android fans, we have found your club t-shirt. This shirt is on a French site called t12lve creations and the shirt is dubbed Andromod.
