Verizon breaks first day sales record with iPhone 4 pre-orders in just two hours

Posted in Verizon by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2011

Well, that was quick. It took Verizon just two hours of having the iPhone 4 available for pre-order to break its all-time record for first day sales of a single device. That’s even more impressive when you consider the fact that it only opened up pre-orders to its own subscribers, and it started at the dead of night.

This means that between 3AM and 5AM yesterday morning, more people ordered the iPhone 4 than Verizon has been able to sell on any full product launch day. We don’t have actual numbers, but it is obviously a lot.

Nook Color pulled from shelves temporarily

Posted in ebooks by Conner Flynn on February 3rd, 2011

The Nook Color has apparently been pulled from store shelves, but only temporarily. The ereader is backordered at Best Buy, and the Barnes & Noble site says that the device is not shipping for two weeks. They gave no reason, but several outlets are reporting that Barnes & Noble wants to make the Nook Color hack proof.

You might remember that the Nook Color was rooted and new unofficial Android OS firmware was available to turn it into a full blown Android tablet. It’s possible that Barnes & Noble feels that custom firmware allows users to download competing e-reading apps like Kindle. But who is going to want it after they “fix” it?

Sony posts strong Q3 profits in PlayStation group

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on February 3rd, 2011

Despite a small 6% dip in quarterly sales year-over-year, “due to a decrease in sales in the game business resulting primarily from unfavorable foreign exchange rates,” Sony’s Networked Products & Services group, which houses the PlayStation brand, managed to post ¥45.7 billion (about $564 million) in profits for the third quarter period, which ended December 31. That’s a 135% gain over the prior-year’s period.

Even though quarterly sales of the PlayStation 3 and PSP have lagged year-over-year, Sony is predicting 15 million PS3 consoles sold for the fiscal year, compared to 13 million for the year prior. This has a lot to do with “cost reductions” on the PS3 and significant gains in PlayStation 3 software sales. So things are looking great for the PS3 right now. As for the PSP and PS2, not so much.

Chucky PC casemod

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on February 3rd, 2011

Remember the Chucky movies? The ones with the psycho doll that killed people? Well, he’s back. This time he’s on a PC case. The modder who made this must really love Chucky. It was made by Omar Majzoub who spent over six months and $2000 on this Child’s Play computer. As you can see it’s designed to look like a giant Good Guys box.

Good guy my arse! Chucky is outside of the box, but there’s a mini-me Chucky, Bride of Chucky and Son of Chucky inside the case. I hope he doesn’t hang around this thing at night.

The DryCase keeps your iPad waterproof by using a vacuum which is created in the case using a small pump to extract all of the air from the pouch. The case tightly seals around your iPad, but still allows the touchscreen to function. It’s like a spacesuit for your gadget.
