Samsung shipping laptops with keylogger installed?

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

Samsung is a pretty popular laptop brand right now, but their reputation may be about to suffer due to claims that it is shipping brand new laptops with an active keylogger installed. According to a post on Networkworld by Mohamed Hassan, the StarLogger keylogger was found preinstalled and active on not just one, but two brand new Samsung laptops.

Would any company be stupid enough to do this and risk a serious PR backlash? According to Hassan, the first was found when he installed security software on his new laptop. That laptop was later returned because of a video driver issue, but the replacement Samsung that he purchased also had the same keylogger on it. One thing that seems suspect is this. Why wouldn’t he have returned the first right away after he found the keylogger? He wasn’t mad enough?

Mouse Pad with Cat Head and USB Heater

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

Here’s the latest in crazy cat gadgets and I’m not talking Hello Kitty. It’s a mouse pad shaped like a cat head with a USB heater inside. You know, in case your hand gets cold and you would like to stick it in a cat’s mouth. Weird.

The cat pad is 234 mm x 260 mm x 110 mm (9.21 in x 10.24 in x 4.33 in) and weighs 95 g (3.35 oz). No word on price but I can think of much better uses for your money. What if your poor cat sees this. He will think that he’s gonna get a fist in his mouth too. It’s just not right.

Google Fiber project picks Kansas City for 1Gbps Internet

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

Google has made its pick for the Google Fiber project today and said that it will first roll out the 1Gbps Internet access in Kansas City, Kansas. Good news for folks there. The city was picked from about 1,100 candidates in all. The service should go live in 2012 if the Board of Commissioners signs on.

The project is basically a real-world way to test the future of high speed Internet connections. We need to prepare and a 1Gbps connection has more than enough bandwidth for streaming 3D video and other tasks that lie ahead. More bandwidth opens up a lot of possibilities. Real-time telemedicine, remote education, and perfect quality video conferencing to name a few.

They will cost you just $14.50 and while we doubt that they have awesome sound quality, they will identify you as a Marvel geek while wearing them. Too bad they don’t also offer the Red Skull. They do look nice and retro though.

Ultra silent computer mouse is… Quiet as a mouse

Posted in Mouse by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

This mouse looks like your typical no frills wireless mouse, but don’t judge a mouse by it’s looks. The Nexus SM-8000 Silent Mouse is virtually quiet when its buttons are pressed. No sound. It won’t bother those around you with annoying clicking noises.

Nexus’ 2.4GHz wireless mouse has five buttons, a DPI of 1,000 up to 16,000 and runs on two AAA batteries with an automatic power save mode. Nothing on pricing and release yet. They are being quiet about that as well.

Posted in Media Players by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

Roku made a grand entrance onto the retail scene on Wednesday, by landing a deal with Best Buy. The stores will carry the Roku XD both in retail and online. This is the first time one of the company’s networked media hubs will be available at stores across the US without a rebranding.

To refresh your memory, the XD can play 1080p video, supports 802.11n Wi-Fi and has a remote with the instant replay button. It lacks the dual-band Wi-Fi, component video out and USB of the XDS, but both can do Amazon Video, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and live sports from the MLB and NHL.

Nintendo says no 3D on Wii sequel

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

Nintendo’s US president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that the company’s Wii sequel won’t use 3D. The reason is apparently because glasses-free 3D is very difficult to accomplish for multiple people on a TV, so the future console will most likely be 2D.

While we don’t yet know what the next console has in store for us, it is expected to finally have HD and to get a speed upgrade for more detail. There is no way to know for sure, but we may see it as early as the E3 event in June.

Nintendo claims best first-day US handheld sales ever for 3DS

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 29th, 2011

Nintendo is counting piles and piles of 3D cash. Without glasses of course. The company has issued a press release claiming that “U.S. day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history.” To clarify, that’s unit sales.

We don’t have exact numbers, but the big N says that more information will be available when the NPD releases its report on the first-week sales. So it looks like the $250 price point might have been right on target and plenty of fans opened their wallets wide.
