Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on March 6th, 2011

It took a while, but finally T-Mobile has rolled out the BlackBerry OS 6 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone, although this news doesn’t come from T-Mobile officially. The update has not yet gone live on their website, but Bold 9700 owners who connect to BlackBerry Desktop on their PCs should be able to install it without a problem.

This release build is version 6.0.0.448, and is the first version of OS 6 made available to Bold 9700 users via T-Mobile. So the wait is over.

Infrared paintings visible only with a digital camera

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on March 4th, 2011

Two Toronto-based artists have come up with a new art form. It’s a new way to view art on canvas. Their new series is called Take a Picture, and while they might look like blank canvases, when you pull out your camera and look through its screen, you’ll see the actual art.

Behind the canvases there are wires and circuits that emit infrared light. This light is just outside the range of what the human eye can see. Digital cameras can see them just fine though. I don’t know if it’s art, but it is pretty cool.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returns to theaters in 3D February 12, 2012

Posted in Star Wars by Reuben Drake on March 4th, 2011

Perhaps the Mayan calendar was right. Maybe the world will end in 2012. Maybe it should end if we feel we need to pair a crappy prequel with crappy 3D. The new 3D-converted editions of each movie are on the way, withThe Phantom Menace officially returning next year on February 12th.

The effects people at Fox, Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic think the visuals of each movie would be good in 3D. Lucas thinks you’ll pay for the privilege of another reworked series. Again. We can’t wait to see Jar Jar slip and juggle fruit in 3D. You?

Elfoid human-shaped phone from Japan is creepy

Posted in Mobile Phones by Reuben Drake on March 4th, 2011

The Telenoid R1 just got creepier. Elfoid was developed at Osaka University and with help from NTT DoCoMo and looks just like the Telenoid, even does pretty much the same thing, which is: giving you a human-like silhouette to talk to. At least this one can go in your pocket.

It tickles you when it rings, alerting you to the call. Just talk into its belly and it speaks to you, playing the voice of whoever’s on the line. It also moves and gestures as if you’re actually holding the person you’re conversing with. Weird.

Thanko earphones with integrated alarm

Posted in Earbuds by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

Thanko comes up with a lot of strange gadgets, but at least this time it is something useful. This pair of earphones features an integrated alarm so if your music puts you to sleep, you can always wake yourself up again.

It’s probably most useful for travelers and commuters and anyone with narcolepsy. But if you tend to fall asleep while wearing your earphones a lot, you might want to listen to something more upbeat or drink some coffee.

Sony’s PSP Go drops to $150

Posted in PSP Go! by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

The PSP Go came and went. It wasn’t what you would call a smashing success. And now Sony has officially knocked another $50 off the handheld’s list price. That follows a similar $50 price drop back in October, making the handheld $150.

So what do you think? Will this new low price make you buy one? Probably not, but you can let us know in the comments below. That money may be better spent on a 3DS.

Over 41 million PS3 consoles sold, PSN revenue up 70 percent in 2010

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

At GDC this week Sony outed some impressive numbers: 41 million to be exact. That’s the number of PS3 consoles the company says it has sold worldwide. In 2010 the PlayStation store saw a 60 percent boost in traffic and a 70 percent boost in revenue from a total of 70 million PSN accounts.

That impressive stuff. And titles like Killzone and Call of Duty sure help. Playstation Plus doesn’t hurt either. To be clear, we are talking about 70 million PSN user accounts, 41 million PS3 consoles, and 80 percent of them are online. Sony has a lot to celebrate right now.

Apple offering refunds to recent iPad buyers

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

If you bought an iPad recently and were bummed out because the new one just came out, we have some good news for you. Apple has announced that users who purchased the first generation iPad within the last 2 weeks can get a refund. They can either request a $100 refund, or they can return their device to Apple for a full refund since the iPad 2 will be offered at the same prices of the current iPad.

Think of it as a trade in for the new device. This 2 week window means that those of you who purchased the iPad earlier than February 16 would not be eligible for the offer though. Hopefully you purchased yours at the right time.

Gmail issues now resolved by Google

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

According to an official announcement from Google, the recent issues involving a number of Gmail users who lost all of their old emails has been resolved. They claimed it was fixed a few days after it came to light, but it hadn’t been completely fixed, as a number of Gmail users were still without access to their old emails.

Now however, Google’s latest statement says that all of these issues should be fixed, but if anybody still has problems with Gmail, they should contact Google. It’s a good lesson to learn about not completely relying on cloud computing. Offline backups of your email might be a good idea.

Nintendo demonstrates glasses-free 3D on the Wii

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

So after its 3D capable handheld protable gaming device, which is all the rage, Nintendo is now incorporating glasses-free 3D technology into the Wii gaming console. Nintendo Producer Hideki Konno showed a demo of how Wii Nunchuck can be used to control the 3D depth effect in a special version of Mario Kart Wii.

The demo was shown at the GDC 2011 event in San Francisco. There’s no word on how soon gamers will be able to play 3D on their Wii, but we would guess it won’t take very long before you are racing Mario and friends in 3D.

NES modded into a breathalyzer

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

If you have some spare time on your hands, why not turn your Nintendo Entertainment System into a breathalyzer called DrunkenNES? That’s what this Engineer did. He turned an NES cartridge into a working breathalyzer unit, and coded a program on the NES to calculate the readings from the controller.

Now everyone will know just how buzzed you are as you try to rescue Peach from Bowser’s clutches. As a bonus, after analyzing the breath of a “player”, they get a score and a rating such as “Buzzy Bee” or “Party Kitten” to show how drunk they are. An “Alco-hall of fame” also ranks you like a hi-score chart. Sounds like a wild mod.
