LaCie USB 3.0 driver for Macs

Posted in LaCie by Conner Flynn on November 4th, 2010

LaCie has released a new Mac USB 3.0 driver. No Mac ships with a USB 3.0-ready port by default, so the driver can only support accessories on a Mac Pro equipped a LaCie PCI Express adapter, or a MacBook Pro with the company’s ExpressCard/34 adapter. Either way, Mac OS X 10.5 is required.

The company is claiming that it delivers speeds of up to 130MBps for single hard drives, and 220MBps for dual hard drives. Several models are compatible, including the Minimus, as well as USB 3.0 versions of the 2big, d2, Rugged and Rikiki.

Droid 2 Global launching on November 11th?

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on November 4th, 2010

Word is that Motorola’s Droid 2 Global will be coming in two colors, one of which could be coming on next Thursday, November 11th. According to a leak, it will be the blue version of the phone. The white model isn’t mentioned, so we aren’t sure if Verizon is planning on holding that one back for a bit longer.

The white version may be too close to the R2-D2 edition and so perhaps they want to give that one a bit more exclusivity before having another white model. Anyhow, are you excited yet? It shouldn’t be long now.

Lego Dissected Frog is the grossest Lego project ever

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on November 4th, 2010

We’ve seen plenty of Lego creations around here, but this one is probably the grossest. This dissected frog is made entirely out of Lego bricks. The creator made the dissected frog for the MOC Olympics where it was entered into the anatomy category.

It’s pretty cool, but also pretty creepy. It reminds me of biology class. I can smell the formaldehyde. Good times. Not! Even the tablet, pins, tweezers, and scalpel are all made from Lego.

Nooka Zub Zayu Watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on November 4th, 2010

The Zub Zayu is the latest timepiece from Nooka and is part of the Zub collection. Zayu comes from the Japanese word, “Sayu”, meaning left and right, which is appropriate because the Nooka Zub Zayu is an asymmetrical watch with some interesting features.

Some of those features include the display with the hour “time capsule” graphic, an ergonomic asymmetrical design and a curved case back for a comfortable fit. We just like it because it’s different. The Zub Zayu is the first Nooka watch with a “sleepmode” to conserve the battery when not in use.

Microsoft has high hopes for the Kinect. In fact, the company is expecting to sell five million Kinect motion sensors through the holiday shopping season. This new figure is quite a leap from their original expectation of three million units for the same time period.

Head of Microsoft’s entertainment unit, Don Mattrick, was quoted recently saying that Presales have exceeded expectations. Can they do it? We’ll see. The Kinect will hit more than 30,000 retail locations, with midnight events scheduled at 5,000 stores for the launch, so they have a good chance.

Time Warner considering longer delay for Netflix, Redbox?

Posted in Netflix by Conner Flynn on November 4th, 2010

Time Warner is considering a policy change that could mean longer delays for content to come to rental services like Netflix and Redbox. The current 28-day window has been pretty successful, but the current deals with partners are going to expire sometime in 2011. At that point, the company might want to extend the delay period. Not good for netflix users.

The company may also be planning to offer brand new movies via video-on-demand (VOD), before the titles are even out of theaters. This move is expected sometime in the middle of next year.

Samsung Galaxy S first smartphone to be Wi-Fi Direct certified

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on November 3rd, 2010

Samsung has another first on it’s hands. The Galaxy S smartphone (GT-I9000) is now listed on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi Direct certification docket. It’s the first actual device to join that esteemed crowd. Sure, any modern WiFi device is capable of becoming Direct certified (via a firmware update if there’s no hardware change in the protocol), but Samsung is the first.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for an actual update that brings this functionality to life. We hope other phone makers follow suit.
