iFixit Boxee Teardown

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on November 11th, 2010

No gadget is safe from a teardown from iFixit. Now they have dismantled the new Boxee. So what did the teardown reveal? Well, a lot of the internal component space is taken up by the huge heatsink needed to cool the Boxee Intel CE4110 processor, the 1GB of RAM, 1GB of flash memory, and a digital-to-analog audio converter.

So in the end, iFixit gave the Boxee a repair score of 7 /10, since the separate power board can be replaced independently from the motherboard, should it ever fail and need to be replaced.

Activision sets new First Day Sales record selling 5.6 Million copies of Black Ops

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on November 11th, 2010

According to initial estimates from Activision, it looks like they have a mega-hit on their hands with Call of Duty: Black Ops. Everyone knew it would do well, but sales of the new game are beyond expectations, having sold 5.6 million copies on its first day. That beats last year’s record set by the Modern Warfare 2 launch of 4.6 million copies sold.

It’s the second year in a row that the Call of Duty franchise has set day one launch records. A shame no one is reading this since you are all playing the game.

A new smartphone was spotted listed on Best Buy, the Nexus S, with the tagline ‘Pure Google’. Best Buy has since taken the page down.

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on November 11th, 2010

Here’s a good way to carry our money around without actually having it with us. Hashy Top-In is a Japanese based company that’s come up with a device called the “E-Money Band”. It’s a silicon band that can be worn like a watch around your wrist and users can load up to $600 on it via chargers available at Japanese convenience stores and other places.

Just tap the band against a compatible reader that stores will carry to make your purchases. That’s it. You’re done. The band is priced at about $36, but it won’t even pull double duty by telling the time.

New Amazon Patent guarantees perfect holiday gifts

Posted in Amazon by Conner Flynn on November 11th, 2010

Amazon has an interesting patent registration for a gift conversion system. The idea is that you’ll end up with the gift that you really want, instead of getting socks or a sweater from your grandmother. The patent describes a system that allows gift recipients to set parameters for the things they want.

For instance “convert all gifts from Aunt Mildred,” or “no clothes with wool,” and “convert VHS to DVD,” etc. So if Aunt Boringpants buys you a VHS movie, you could easily convert it to a DVD.

Reports suggest that you’ll need to dial ##634# to get into the diagnostics menu, switch over to “Modem, Tethered Call” mode and go through a few more prompts. Then you should be able to tether your device via USB.

Whatever the reason you can pre-order the device if you happen to be in China and have the dough. Assuming you don’t mind paying a tablet price for an ereader.

iPad is No. 3 holiday wish, after world peace and happiness

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2010

Dear santa, please bring me world peace and happiness. If you can’t do that, I’ll take an iPad. The Consumer Electronics Association just put out their top ten wish list, and world peace and happiness are the most popular wishes for the holidays. But failing that, we still want our toys.

The iPad is the third most wished for item, behind peace and happiness and a laptop. The iPad and the laptop even beat out other important things, like having the family together, good health, and money. Even though you need money to get an iPad.
