Logitech’s Google TV box gets official: $300, camera, mobile apps

Posted in Logitech by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Logitech has confirmed the first Google TV device, the Revue. It will focus on the Android-based platform’s hybrid TV/web searching and TV apps but should also have strong support for Logitech’s other devices. It can act as a Harmony gateway, with new iOS and Android apps. It also supports the same Unifying receiver technology that is found in its mice and keyboards, so it supports existing peripherals as well as the pre-supplied keyboard and optional diNovo mini-based Mini Controller.

A Media Player app on the Revue will get media from computers on the local network through DLNA. And of course it can output up to 1080p over HDMI and has two USB ports for accessories like the new TV Cam webcam for video chats over Logitech’s Vid. The device works with traditional remotes through IR blaster inputs and gets online using Ethernet or 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Google working to bring Hulu to Google TV

Posted in Hulu by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

There have been reports focusing on Google TV’s lack of partnerships with major networks, but now Logitech representatives have confirmed that Google is trying to bring the Hulu streaming video service to their new set-top box.

Details are scarce at the moment, but Google is said to be involved in ongoing negotiations with Hulu executives. If the two strike a deal, which is likely, the service will probably be limited to Hulu Plus subscribers. Hulu has already partnered with several hardware companies to bring its streaming service to products like TiVo Premiere and Roku, but none of the set-top boxes provide access to Hulu’s free content.

Dream Jammies use an iPhone app to monitor your sleep, shake you awake

Posted in Apparel by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Forget alarm clocks. Dream Jammies will shake you awake. Alexander Reeder’s technologically enhanced pajamas are connected by a series of wires to an iPhone App that allows you to get shaken awake by someone connected to the other side. No matter how far away they may be.

The Dream Jammies are pretty ugly, but they are fitted with motion sensors that can tell whether the wearer is standing up, laying down or tossing and turning. The information is transmitted to their partner’s iPhone which indicates restful or restlessness via a colorful screen. If one partner shakes their iPhone, it wakes their sleeping partner.

Microsoft to open retail store opposite the Apple store in Mall Of America

Posted in Microsoft by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Microsoft is squaring off with Apple again in a high noon type of retail store showdown. The company’s upcoming store in the Mall of America in Minneapolis will sit directly across from the Apple store. The store is said to be twice as wide as Apple’s store, and it will apparently shut down ten times as often with a blue screen of death instead of a closed sign. Okay, I made that last part up.

We don’t know when the store will be open, but it might open before the Windows Phone 7 launch. Microsoft will also emulate Apple’s Genius Bar by offering an Answer Desk.

Kinect User Manual reveals mandatory 6 to 8 feet distance

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Better move that coffee table out of the way. If you have a super small living room, you better re-arrange it. If you plan on using the Kinect that is. Some pages from the upcoming Kinect’s user manual have surfaced, and it confirms what some folks have been worrying about. That you will need some spare space.

The manual suggests that players stand about six feet away from the sensor to be visible. If there are two people playing, they should stand eight feet away. It won’t be an issue for many of us, but if you have a small room it could be a problem.

Larger display iPhones coming?

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Wall Street analyst from Kaufman Brothers, Shaw Wu, recently said that sources familiar with Apple’s overseas suppliers see larger as well as smaller displays making their way to iPhones very soon. Mr. Wu says:

“We believe Apple moving to a more complete iPhone product line makes strategic sense in that its iPhone 4 addresses only the high-end of the market. We think Apple should take a page out of its iPod playbook where it has had a lot (of) success with a 3-tier strategy addressing entry-level, mid-range and high-end, making it difficult for competitors.”
