Seven-inch iPad to have Retina Display, 128GB of memory?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on October 7th, 2010

According to Taiwanese component suppliers contacted by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, Apple is not only working on a 7-inch iPad, but one that should have a camera, Retina Display and up to 128GB of storage. Current iPads are limited to 64GB of memory. The analyst was also told that the new device should launch in the first quarter of 2011, and have a “micro or mini” USB port.

The current iPad does support USB peripherals, but only through its 30-pin dock connector, which limits people to one add-on at a time. AppleInsider notes that the port may reflect the European Union’s establishment of micro USB as a standard for mobile charging.

No word yet on what kind of Verizon friendly features it may have, if any, but the Wall Street Journal says that it would be based on an alternative wireless technology used by Verizon. We just want to know what the price is going to be like with a contract. If they beat AT&T’s offers, things could get competitive.

That includes former Kinkos stores, which FedEx recently took over. The idea is to draw in extra business customers who need to keep working while they’re shipping packages.

Acer Netbooks may offer Dual-OS Booting as standard

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on October 7th, 2010

The latest rumor regarding Acer says that Acer is planning to make dual OS netbooks a standard choice for all of its netbooks that have a dual-core processor. Google’s Android OS on the Aspire One D255 isn’t available to everyone, but it will become a standard feature in the future. There’s no reason not to offer it since the OS is cheap and can be easily added.

Android has been seen by notebook manufacturers as a way of providing a near-instant boot solution, though there were previously some issues getting the OS to work right since it wasn’t designed to support a mouse and supported ARM chipsets instead of Intel Atom chips.

Concept phone charges in your pocket

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on October 7th, 2010

This concept Nokia phone charges in your pocket by inducting heat from your body. It comes from English designer Patrick Hyland, who sees the phone being made from copper and capable of drawing heat from your body, then converting it to energy.

It does this using a thermogenerator that’s been placed in the copper E-Cu phone (“E” for environment, and “Cu” for copper). Sadly, what with the demand and high prices of copper, this phone will never see the light of day.
