Nokia to intro E7 next week

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2010

Nokia’s plans for its in-house Nokia World expo should include the first mainstream Eseries touchscreen phone, according to leaks. The E7 is a touchscreen QWERTY model. Aside from that we don’t have many details, but it may be a Symbian^3 slider similar to the MeeGo-using N9.

The London event should also be used to confirm that the N8 is finally shipping, a mere seven months after it was first unveiled. Of course other new smartphones are expected to come along too, but we don’t know which ones.

It features a swivel display, so that the device can be converted into a tablet with multi-touch display. No info on price yet, but other specs include: Up to Intel Core i5 processor, 3G, GPS, Windows 7 Professional, Ambient light sensor and up to 8 hours of battery life.

Motorola Droid 2 ad makes fun of the iPhone’s lack of flash

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2010

Motorola is pretty happy about their Droid line. There’s the great sales to be proud of along with the fact that the Droid 2 supports Flash. So the company hasn’t hesitated to get it’s digs in on Apple. Here is the latest.

The company has posted a full-page newspaper ad that parodies Apple’s “there’s an app for that” campaign, with the tagline “there’s a phone for that”. The question is, is Flash support an important factor to buyers?

Classic White DualShock 3 appears

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2010

The heavenly white PS3 Slim pictured above can be found in Japan, but the “Classic White” DualShock 3 beside it has just appeared for preorder at e-tailers in the US. We doubt very much that a white 160GB game system will follow this controller across the Pacific, but it also would not surprise us too much if Sony reveals one before these preorders ship on October 15th.

Because Sony already sells a “Ceramic White” controller, and as Engadget points out, unless you’re attempting to match colors, a single shade of white is generally all you need.

Dyson Air Multiplier bladeless fan copied

Posted in Dyson by Shane McGlaun on September 6th, 2010

The first time I laid eyes on that crazy looking Dyson Air Multiplier fan, I thought it looked pretty darn cool. I could certainly see that thing sitting on my desk keeping me cool during the hot Texas summer. I can’t see paying the $299 price for it though.

A company from Asia called Abiko has created its own knock-off of that Dyson fan and it looks so much like the Dyson version that the company even strapped the thing with a similar price. The Abiko knock-off will sell for $223 at MSRP.

ExoPC can now be pre-ordered

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on September 6th, 2010

That ExoPC Slate has been teasing us with it sexiness for a while now. If you are among the many that have a hankering for the sexy little Slate, you can now pre-order yours from the manufacturer. Before you whip out that credit card, you do need to know a few things.

The big issues with the pre-order 64GB version of the ExoPC Slate is that it is unknown if GPS will be featured on the device at this time. The maker has had issues getting GPS to work. That said the final product could have GPS, but that isn’t looking promising at this point.

Efika MX Smartbook from Genesi available to purchase

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on September 6th, 2010

I will say right up front that I never really saw the point of smartbooks. They are the same basic size as a netbook, though they are a pound or so lighter. The big downside in my mind has always been the performance of a smartbook.

Inside the smartbooks netbook looking shell hides hardware with more in common with a smartphone. If you like the smartbook promise a new machine from Genesi has landed called the Efika MX Smartbook. The machine can be purchased now for $349.

Amazon Germany lists Samsung Galaxy Tab at 799 euro

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on September 6th, 2010

If you are one of the hoards of folks that have been waiting for more info on the Galaxy Tab some news has surfaced today. We already know that here in the US the thing will sell in the $200 to $400 range depending on subsidies from carriers.

That subsidized price will obviously mean there will be a contract for a couple years tying you to the carrier and its data plan. Over in Europe the subsidized price for the Tab via O2 is said to be 99 euro with a data plan contract for a bit less than 28 euro per month. If you want the thing sans contract in Europe, Amazon Germany has priced the thing.

You can expect to see this phone hanging out of your favorite geek’s pocket very soon. It’s the Astromech flavored Droid 2 we’ve all been waiting for. Some pics of the finished phone have shown up and sure enough it still looks like a flattened R2 unit.

This limited-edition Motorola Droid 2 is as close as you are going to get to a pocket R2-D2. This has to be the coolest looking phone ever.

Samsung Galaxy Tab to cost between $200 and $400

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

Right now it is looking like Europe will pay a pretty penny for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, but the 7-inch tablet may not cost as much here in the US. According to the Wall Street Journal, a Samsung executive claims it could run between $200 and $300 depending on carrier subsidies.

Meanwhile the Korea Times has chimed in saying $300 to $400 which they attribute to a different Samsung bigwig, who also said that the Tab “will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone.”

Energizer wireless inductive charger for blackberry and iphone

Posted in Chargers by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

We love anything that helps us get rid of wires around here. So we are excited about Energizer’s new inductive charger that is Qi enabled. Qi is the wireless charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium, and should eventually make its way into more and more devices.

The charger will work with the iPhone or the Blackberry Curve 8900. The battery door for the Blackberry and the sleeve case for the iPhone 3G/3GS are both sold separately. Luckily, this device has enough room to charge three devices at the same time, which is nice.

Toshiba UHS-I SDHC and microSDHC cards

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

Toshiba’s first batch of lightning-quick UHS-I cards ship in November, Toshiba’s chips will be faster and larger than Panasonic’s. Toshiba is offering full-size SDHC UHS-I cards at up to 32GB that promise maximum read and write times of 95MB/s and 80MB/s respectively, not to mention tiny microSDHC units that manage a very respectable 40MB/s and 20MB/s.

These numbers might be a bit less in practice, but we imagine you’ll get at least the quoted minimum transfer rate of 10MB/s. No prices on these just yet, but we will know soon.

Blest H Plastic to Oil Converter

Posted in Home by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

Ever have the urge to turn some of those annoying plastic bags back into oil? Well, now you can do just that at home thanks to the Blest H, a desktop machine which can convert plastic back into oil. The company doesn’t say exactly how this is done, but it looks neat.

They make industrial sized machines as well, but this one is for home. The machine currently costs around $9,500.00 to buy, but they’re hoping prices will fall over time. Hey, if you make enough oil, maybe you can sell it and be your own BP.

Apple’s Ping hits 1 million users in 48 hours

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

Apple has already hit a milestone as it has reached over one million users of Ping within the first 48 hours of its going online. That’s a third of the three million that have downloaded iTunes 10. You can expect that number to grow much higher, as “many more people” are likely to download iTunes.

The adoption is very rapid and is helped tremendously by Apple’s existing user base of course. With over 160 million iTunes owners using credit cards and so are guaranteed to be attached to an Apple ID, Ping will require very little effort to get a large portion of those users online.

500 Zune HDs headed for United Airlines Asia-Pacific Flights

Posted in Zune HD by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

Apparently Zune HD head Dave McLauchlan has been making deals with studios to get tons of movies ready for viewing so that you can do more than stare out your window on flights. 500 Zunes are being provided for long-haul flights to Hong Kong and Australia.

They will preload the devices with exclusive content, including movies that haven’t yet made it to a DVD release. The Zune HDs in question will now been encased in rubber, with their screens protected, and batteries charged.
