Pentax offers NB1000 Lego-like camera

Posted in Pentax by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2010

The NB1000 from Pentax is all about customization. It is identical to the RS1000 and comes with a Lego-like body, allowing you to customize your camera with different blocks that come in several sizes and colors. It’s basically just a cheap ploy to get Lego fans buying the camera.

The NB1000 is a 14.1-megapixel camera with a 4x zoom. It is capable of recording 720p video too. Looks like this one is for the Japanese market only though. It will be available later this year for 20,000 Yen ($238).

Posted in Uncategorized by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2010

LG has another first on its hands with their Infinia PX950 Plasma HDTV series. It’s the first of its kind to receive THX certification after passing over 400 laboratory tests that evaluate left and right eye images for color accuracy, cross-talk, viewing angles and video processing performance.

It also went through THX certification for superior picture quality in 2D which is a must before it can even have a go at THX 3D certification. It takes just one button push for the viewer to select THX 2D or 3D Cinema Modes, and if it’s 3D you want, you’ll need to make sure you have a pair of active shutter glasses.

Sanyo has announced their latest Xacti digicams, this time they are aimed at the social media crowd. The VPC-GH4 is similar to the VPC-GH2, since it features Full HD 1080 video recording, but unlike the GH2, it integrates YouTube, Facebook, and Picasa uploads, even Twitter notifications.

The downside is that the newer model has still photos taken down to 10 megapixels (the old one featured 14 megapixels). Still, at $200, it’s all good. It hits store shelves later this month.

Speed bumps will one day be replaced with illusions of children

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2010

Speed bumps are so last century. That’s why the Canadian city of Vancouver is experimenting with a speed control solution that uses an optical illusion to trick you into thinking there is a child in the road. I’m sure that will slow people down and give some people heart attacks too.

The program is being piloted near École Pauline Johnson Elementary School, where they use a very lifelike painted optical illusion that looks like a little girl chasing a ball into traffic.

In fact, they are talking an end-of-year launch date. The Kno will be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, have 16GB of storage and should cost under $1,000. Yes, that’s pretty expensive. We will see how it goes.

If this thing sells nicely, it might encourage others to lower their price point. It has some decent specs, but even if it doesn’t completely blow you away with performance, at that price you have to give it a chance.
