Best Buy confirms Droid 2 at $199 with 2-year activation, $599 without

Posted in Best Buy by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

There have been a ton of leaks up to this point, so it’s hard to believe that Verizon or Motorola have not yet acknowledged it’s existence. However Greg from North Carolina says that his local Best Buy has some of those leaked dummy units on shelves, along with some price tags.

Looks like the phone will launch at $199 with carrier subsidy and $599 without a plan. There’s still no solid confirmation of that August 12 release date, but we all know the score anyway.

Be like Uhura, not like Spock

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

Spock always thought he was so smart, but he could be pretty simple-minded sometimes. Just look at the way he hunches over his monitor. He never sat, or adjusted his monitor.

Uhura was wise and sat relaxed at her monitor, casually avoiding the Captains flirting. This comparison is used by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to encourage their members to take ergonomics seriously. This poster was pasted in the bathroom of the facility.

Turn your phone into a tablet

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

Do you tote around both a phone and a tablet? Apple fans need not answer since we already know that you do. Why not merge the two? That’s the idea behind the Sony Ericsson FH concept.

The FH is a dual screen flip phone. The hinge allows you to position both halves of the phone side by side, so that the screens line up and work like one big screen. Wait, there’s more.

Turn any surface into a race track, with tape!

Posted in Toys by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

You could buy your kid a whole bunch of Hot Wheels cars and track sets, only to step on them late at night and break your leg… Or you could simplify things and buy this inexpensive kit that lets you turn just about anything into a track.

Sound awesome? It is. No, it really isn’t. The “My First Autobahn” Tape Kit doesn’t actually keep your cars’ wheels on the track, but it’s still a cool way to make roads wherever you want. The tape won’t damage floors, and can be easily removed from most surfaces.

Verizon BlackBerry 9650 shown running OS 6

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

If you have been losing sleep wondering whether the BlackBerry OS 6 will arrive on your Bold 9650, this should ease your worries. Verizon hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, but pictures of BlackBerry OS 6.0.0.80 running on the Verizon Bold 9650 have surfaced.

However, this leak also indicates that it’s running sluggishly, so hopefully the performance issue will be sorted out. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Augen’s Kmart tablet and smartbook won’t have Google-branded apps

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

The future of Augen’s $150 tablet and $100 smartbook isn’t looking as bright as we had hoped. They have slow processors and resistive touchscreens and now their official Google app privileges have just been revoked.

Augen has confirmed that the entire proprietary suite (including Market, Gmail and more) was preloaded on the devices without Google’s permission, and won’t appear on new batches that make it to store shelves. Augen says it’s working with Google to secure rights to these apps for new products down the road. Hopefully it gets sorted out quickly.

Motion-controlled Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots have gone all futuristic on us. Zachery Shivers and Anne Flinchbaugh have created a motion-controlled version of the game as part of Texas Instruments’ Co-op Design Challenge. This version, unlike the original has plenty of servos and circuit boards underneath the ring.

But the main event here is TI’s accelerometer-equipped Chronos watch, which lets you translate actual punches into rock ‘em sock ‘em punches. Awesome.

Amazon has 61% of E-Book Market

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on August 7th, 2010

Amazon still has a comfortable lead over Apple and other competitors in the US e-book market, according to an analysis by RR Bowker. The group claims that Amazon’s Kindle Store controlled 61 percent of e-book downloads.

Barnes & Noble’s store has 20 percent while Sony has five percent. Apple’s market share for the iBookstore wasn’t published at the time of the study, but was less than five percent. Amazon also has the largest device market share, at 40 percent, and reading directly on a computer comes in second.

Laser Tripwire takes your Photo, uploads it to Twitter

Posted in twitter by Conner Flynn on August 7th, 2010

Do you have a bunch of people sneaking around that you want to not only catch, but expose to the world? If so, then this laser tripwire project is worth a try. You have to hook up a laser pointer, a photoresistor, and a webcam all together, and voila, you have a laser tripwire that will capture a photo of the intruder and upload a link to the photo on Twitter.

Think of it as a basic home security system. In fact it would be great if more security systems used this while the home-owner is away. The cops and Twitter would have a picture of any perks who break in.

Looks like we can expect another Xbox 360 bundle soon. The bundle has not yet been announced, but a 250GB Xbox 360/Kinect bundle can be seen on Microsoft’s Australian packaging for the 4GB Xbox 360 / Kinect box.

The 250GB bundle looks similar to the 4GB bundle, with a larger capacity hard drive, a glossy finish, and it includes a headset. We aren’t sure what game comes with the bundle, but it’s most likely Kinect Adventures.

Apple could roll out two more MacBook Air models

Posted in MacBook by Conner Flynn on August 6th, 2010

Word on the street is that another two MacBook Air models are being prepped, shipping later this September. As far as pricing, speculation persists that it will be less than what Apple has slated its MacBook Air for currently.

These new MacBook Air models could target the mainstream notebook market, which would see its 13.3″ display shrunk down to 11.6″, with Intel’s newer ultra-low voltage Core iX processors. It’s a drop in processing power, but affordable enough to compete against other mainstream models and brands like the Acer TimelineX.
