Intel’s smart TV remote tailors content to you

Posted in Remotes by Conner Flynn on July 12th, 2010

Intel’s Labs is planing a new user-identifying system for remote controls. Once it familiarizes itself with a user, this motion sensing remote can recognize the user by the way he uses it. It takes accelerometer readings every 100 nanoseconds, building a data set about each person, which is then applied the next time you use the remote.

It still needs some work as accuracy rates are still well below 100 percent, but they hope to improve on that and probably deliver some targeted advertising to boot if history is any indication.

Google Open Spot lets Android users find free parking spaces

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2010

Google’s latest initiative is called Open Spot. It’s an Android (2.0 and up) application that allows you to search for unclaimed spaces that have been reported by other Open Spot users. Once users head elsewhere, it allows you to mark your spot as open and available. Once a spot is marked, the color gradually goes from red to yellow the longer it remains unclaimed.

Engadget checked it out and they generally like it, however they feel that the ability to add notes to each marked place is needed. There should be a way to see whether a spot is metered, covered by a strange city permit law etc. Hopefully an update will enable comments.

iPhone 4 Cases in Crocodile Skin and White Gold

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2010

Forget fancy Swarovski studded iPhone cases. Crocodile skin with white gold is the way to go. Or maybe a Stingray polished or python skinned iPhone 4 case? Apparently each of these is available from a site called MJ Apple iPhone Limited Edition.

Yes, that name sounds pretty shady. But if this is your sort of thing, these are all limited editions. Apparently they ship from Russia and you will have to email or call to ask about price and availability, so you know it’s expensive.

Halo Bike Lock texts you when your bike is stolen

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2010

Summer. It’s a time of sun, fun, bikinis and…bike thieves. This concept from designer Steve Hunt looks just like a halo. It’s designed so that the connector cable is housed within the frame of the lock itself, which makes it harder for thieves to cut your cable.

The coolest feature however, is that Hunt wants to have an integrated wireless card inserted into the lock itself, so that when your bike gets stolen, the lock will notify you.

The Candwich is a sandwich in a can

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2010

I thought I had seen it all in weird foods. I was wrong. Here is something a bit horrifying and disgusting. The “Candwich” is now on store shelves. Yes, it’s a sandwich in a can. You can get strawberry jelly and peanut butter, grape jelly and BBQ chicken.

If that doesn’t sound disgusting, I don’t know what is. No word on price, but this would be tough to eat even in a disaster situation. Oh and there’s a candy surprise inside.

Miffy is a small Dutch rabbit famous for appearing in picture books. Now Onkyo has plastered her likeness on some C4 units to catch your little girl’s eye. It doesn’t sport very thrilling hardware. A 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, etc.

But fear not, the lid is covered with character faces. Its version of Windows 7 or XP has Miffy-themed apps and wallpaper on the desktop. Nothing on price yet, but it’s Japan-only as it’s too cute for our shores.
