Samsung Wave sells more than a million units worldwide

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on July 13th, 2010

The folks at Samsung are doing the Wave, both figuratively and literally. Samsung didn’t expect their Wave smartphone to be as good a seller as the iPhone or EVO 4G, so the company has reason to celebrate. Their first bada phone has passed the 1 million mark in terms of global sales.

Keep in mind that this figure was reached before it reached it’s 4 week birthday. It will be interesting to see some more numbers as time goes by, but for now Sammy is happy indeed.

Wal-Mart offering $199 Kinect Bundle, Kinect games for $60

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on July 13th, 2010

It has been pretty much confirmed that Microsoft’s Kinect will be priced at $150. But what we didn’t know is that the games are going to sell for $60, and none come bundled with the hardware. This new Wal-Mart preorder bundle for the Kinect hardware, one game of your choice and a $30 online-only gift card for $199 also shows games like Kinect Adventures and Joyride listing for $60.

I’m guessing that is probably about twice as much as you expected. Floored us too. So you are expected to drop $210 for the hardware and a single game. That’s ridiculous. At least one game should come with it.

Metallic Velcro is super strong

Posted in Science by Shane McGlaun on July 13th, 2010

Velcro is one of the best inventions ever. It allows us to wear shoes that don’t need tied, keep swimsuits fastened without zippers or buttons, and hand stuff on the wall and still be able to get it down easily.

Velcro would be great in many industrial uses too, if it could withstand heat and chemicals. A new metallic Velcro has been spied that has hooks and loops made from metal. The stuff is crazy strong.

Apple deletes mentions of Consumer Reports’ iPhone 4 piece on forums

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on July 13th, 2010

Consumer Reports stated that it “can’t recommend” the iPhone 4 until the antenna issues are fixed. It’s labs as well as others have verified the issue. Now it looks like Apple is trying to mind-wipe their users of the whole affair.

Apple has apparently deleted threads about the Consumer Reports article from its support forums. Keep in mind, this is nothing new; there’s moderation, plus the company regularly deletes discussion of hardware flaws that it’s not ready to confess to. Plus, Jobs was responsible for deleting R2-D2′s memory of Anakin building 3PO, so the prequels would make sense. Thank God Apple doesn’t own the internet.

Grape-DR supercomputer uses less power than the typical light bulb

Posted in Green by Shane McGlaun on July 13th, 2010

Generally, a supercomputer brings to mind a power-sucking vortex of raw performance crammed inside a slick and simple cabinet that hides most of the hardware. The Grape-DR supercomputer isn’t your typical supercomputer model though.

The little beastie lacks the cabinet to hide all the hardware. Instead of that cabinet, the Grape-DR has a tangled mess of wires that will one day give a system admin a nightmare. The machine has super computer power though.

Posted in Accessories by Shane McGlaun on July 13th, 2010

Carbon fiber and titanium are materials that are often used in the racing and aerospace industries. The materials are used because they are strong and very lightweight.

You don’t often hear of carbon fiber and titanium being used in the coaster market though. A company called Black Badger has unveiled just such a coaster. Each of them is made from a patterned roll of carbon fiber and titanium.

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on July 13th, 2010

Controlling the music and content on your iPod or iPhone is easy to do with the Apple menus. Things can get more difficult if you have to use a system on an accessory that is different though. BMW has announced that it will support the iPod Out feature on iOS4.

The feature will allow BMW to put the actual menus from the iPod touch or the iPhone onto the cars in dash screen. BMW will support the feature on future BMW and Mini models.

One possible chip might be the Marvell 1GHz Armada 610 processor, which is aimed at tablets, mobile Internet devices, and e-readers. The chip features full HD 1080p playback, 16-megapixel image captures, and advanced 3D graphics.
