Images of new Xbox 360 dashboard leaked

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on July 15th, 2010

French site Logic-Sunrise has posted shots of what appears to be a new version of the Xbox 360 Dashboard interface. And if you are the skeptical sort, the images have been removed from Logic-Sunrise, replaced by a Microsoft takedown notice. That should make things clearer.

This UI features a “Natal Tuner” application and a “Natal” setup process, which directs requests for help to the @xboxsupport Twitter account.

Apple engineer warned Jobs about iPhone antenna early on

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 15th, 2010

Now we have more drama in the Apple antenna saga. Bloomberg says that someone “familiar with the matter” claims Apple’s own antenna expert, Ruben Caballero, told Apple management that the iPhone 4 antenna design could cause problems and dropped calls.

Caballero is a senior engineer for Apple who holds many antenna patents under his belt. We don’t know the whole story but it is the latest twist to this sorted tale and suggests that Steve Jobs had been alerted to this problem during the design phase.

iPod touch FaceTime to use email addresses?

Posted in iPod Touch by Conner Flynn on July 15th, 2010

We figured that the next iPod touch would get in on Apple’s FaceTime video-calling action, but how will calls be initiated without phone numbers? Well, BGR has the scoop. It will all be based on email addresses. Registering an email address with the touch and FaceTime will let people videocall you using that email address

However when you call an iPhone user it will still involve the phone number. BGR thinks that the email-based system will be extended to the phone eventually too, which I guess makes sense.

Tag-Heuer Eyewear offers $450 Squadro Night Vision Optics glasses

Posted in Accessories by Shane McGlaun on July 15th, 2010

I have a few sets of name brand sunglasses and surprisingly I have managed to not sit on them or lose them for a few years now. We can all understand the need for sunglasses when we drive, but some folks have a bigger problem with night driving thanks to glare than day driving.

Tag-Heuer Eyewear has unveiled a new line of glasses for night driving that have special lenses in them. The special lenses are supposed to reduce glare and help improve night vision. Apparently, a bunch of racecar drivers wear these things when racing at night.

GE iPhone app lets you set the mood in your room with light

Posted in GE by Shane McGlaun on July 15th, 2010

There is an app for everything on the iPhone. Many of the apps are for things that I never really needed or wanted though. A strange new app from GE has surfaced that lets the user take a picture of a room of their house with the iPhone camera.

Once the pic is taken the app then lets the user apply lighting filters to the pic to get an idea what different light moods would look like. If you find a lighting mood that you want, you can get a list of the bulbs to get to set the mood.

HP Android tablet launch postponed

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on July 15th, 2010

If you had your heart set on a new tablet from HP running the Android OS, we have bad news for you. The tablet was expected to land in Q4 2010, but reports are coming in that say the project has been postponed.

AllThingsD reports that sources have told it that the launch has been postponed and there are no hints on exactly how long the postponing will last. Considering Android and WebOS, which HP paid a pretty penny for, are direct competitors the move is not surprising.

XStreamHD: Blu-ray quality movies instantly

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

Charlie over at DVICE got a chance to check out the XStreamHD entertainment system that’s currently under development and in beta. The satellite-based XStreamHD works using the concept of “pre-fetched entertainment.” which means you can view movies without having to download or stream. The data for up to 40 movies is sent to your box during the night ready for you to view whenever you’re ready. All Blu-Ray quality.

When you want to watch a movie just unlock it and play it immediately. There’s a monthly fee of $10 plus a fee for each movie watched but XStreamHD claims that it will keep prices in line with amazon and iTunes rentals.

Grip-It covers for your game controllers

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

Not sure why you would need these Grip-it covers for your Xbox 360 or the PS3, unless you have some sort of sweaty hand disease. I’ve had hands so sweaty that I couldn’t grip the analog stick on the PS3 controller. Ever. And I play plenty of games.

But if you do need to get a grip, these Grip-it analog covers are now available for both PS3 and Xbox controllers. Each pack comes with four covers. Like condoms for your loving controller partner. So you can cover the analog sticks on two controllers for $4.99.

Apple buys mapping company Poly9

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

Apple has just purchased another mapping company, Canadian 3D mapping startup Poly9 Group. Poly9 makes a browser based 3D globe similar to that of Google Earth. Neither Apple or Poly9 have confirmed the acquisition yet, but a French Canadian News site states that two of the companies employees have now relocated in Silicon Valley and are bound by a non disclosure agreement.

Last year Apple purchased another mapping company called Placebase, which adds layers of data on top of maps. Looks like they are planning a Google Earth of their own.

Posted in MID by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

The Viliv N5 is like a netbook…for tiny people. You’ll get all the specs that you would find in a regular 10″ netbook, aside from the 4.8″ display. But at least you can fold it up and put it in your pocket. Dynamism is even offering same day shipping if you must have it now.

The N5 features a 3G modem for about $799, but if you want a Wi-Fi only version you’ll need to wait until July 19th when it will cost you $649. The Viliv N5 is powered by Windows 7, with an Intel Atom Z520 1.3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, a QWERTY keyboard and a 32GB SSD.

Acer Android 2.2 Tablets coming in Q4 2010

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

Acer is still in the Android game. They have some android handsets, a 7-inch tablet that might be released later this year and possibly two netbooks coming soon. Now it looks like there’s also a 10-inch Android 2.2 tablet coming in the fourth quarter of this year along with the 7-inch model.

DigiTimes claims to have spoken with “sources from notebook players” who say that the tablets will be powered by ARM chipsets and will have a stronger focus on multimedia and entertainment. Acer is also apparently working with some carriers to support the tablets.
