Night-vision mode could double your Android’s battery life

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on July 4th, 2010

Want to extend the battery life of your Android phone? Would you switch your display to night-vision mode to do so? Probably. Especially if it could reduce the power consumption by half.

Android engineer Jeff Sharkey has discovered a hack that lets you power each specific color channel (red, green, and blue) found in an AMOLED display. Organic LED displays have separate pixel elements for each color channel so powering only one color can save a lot of power.

So what color would be best to use? Jeff hooked up an industrial power meter and found that powering only the red pixels could nearly double the battery life. Now that could come in very handy.

Green is the obvious choice as we can see the colour green far better than red or blue.

Shame the engineer didn’t say how much power we’d save using just green.

Wouldn’t that be a fantastic app!

Use your droid like normal, but if you notice your battery running low and aren’t around a charger, just turn on night vision and stretch that last 20% out!

I agree with Bryan, that sounds like an excellent app to have when you aren’t near a charger and on lo-batt. Heck, I’d even pay a dollar or two on the Marketplace for something that useful
