Pranks are fun as long as no one gets hurt. When you can put a geeky twist on a prank, it can be gold. That’s what we have here. Pure nerd gold. See that giant R2-D2? It used to be an observatory.

Well, until students at Minnesota’s Carleton College turned the campus astronomical observatory into a giant R2-D2. Man, I hope the Empire can’t see that from space. They might come looking for the Death Star plans.

Toshiba LCD panel does 2D and 3D images at the same time

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on June 4th, 2010

Toshiba has an LCD panel which is capable of converting a 2D image partially to a 3D image, where it can then be viewed with the naked eye without the need for an extra pair of special glasses. This LCD panel is compatible with the “integral imaging method” developed by Toshiba and boasts nine viewpoints within a 12″ display at 1,400 x 1,050 resolution for 2D images in full screen and 466 x 350 for 3D images in full screen.

The 3D images are made possible thanks to the “GRIN (gradient index) lens” that changes the distribution of refraction indexes by controlling the gradient of liquid crystal molecules. Turning on the second panel allows You to show 2D images and 3D images simultaneously.

Japanese docs use iPad during surgery

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 4th, 2010

I like my iPad and I have taken it with me many places for reading and playing games when I get bored. Lots of folks are finding that the iPad is good for a great many things, including a group of surgeons in Japan.

These docs used the iPad during surgery apparently to view images to help during the procedure. The iPad was held by an assistant during the surgury. I imagine it went something like this — scalpel, suction, iPad, landscape please.

AT&T says sorry for threatening customer with legal action for pair of emails to CEO

Posted in AT&T by Shane McGlaun on June 4th, 2010

I think anyone who has read about AT&T and its ways of dealing with complaints or is an AT&T customer probably understands that the company appears to be run by a bunch of asshats. This was made abundantly clear this week when word that AT&T had threatened a customer who emailed the CEO twice over a few week period with a cease and desist letter if he emailed again.

The guy took his story the internet where it grew to epic proportions in a poo storm the likes of which hasn’t been seen in at least a few weeks. AT&T has now said sorry to the customer for threatening him and had a senior AT&T VP call and talk to the customer personally.
