iBooks now supports PDF files

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

With the success of the iPad, Apple has announced some updates for its iBook app at WWDC. The changes are fairly practIcal and useful ones. Things that make life just a tad easier with books.

Like the ability to make notes in your book, there’s a new bookmark ribbon, a page to display your notes and bookmarks, and yes, PDF support. Those additions should help steer even more people to the iPad who are looking for an eBook reader, but are undecided.

iMovie for iPhone

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

HD video recording is one thing, but the iPhone 4 needs a way to edit these recordings on the phone itself. Enter iMovie for iPhone. At last, you can be the Steven Spielberg of the iPhone. Well, maybe not that good.

Nothing too fancy here. We are talking video editing on a phone after all, not a desktop. But you can combine various clips, add music, photos, titles and transitions as well as throw in some basic effects. The effects are from the desktop version of iMovie, so you’ll recognize them. You can export in 360p, 540p and 720p.

iPhone 4 is official

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

Apple’s latest iPhone is official, complete with an A4 chip inside, just like the iPad. The A4 has a few interconnected chips, like the Cortex-A8 main processor unit with a PowerVR SGX 535, and two low-power 128MB DDR SDRAM chips. This means that they can process things faster while consuming less battery than before since they are connected.

The 3.5-inch screen sports a resolution of 960 × 640 pixels. It has four times as many pixels as the current iPhone 3GS’ display. The screen has 326 pixel per inch resolution. Apple is also claiming an 800-to-1 contrast ratio which is four times better than the 3GS.

Apple launched its Magic Mouse a while back that has no physical buttons on its slick and smooth surface. Rumors claim that Apple is set to launch a new Magic peripheral today at WWDC called the Magic Trackpad.

The Magic Trackpad is just what it sounds like, a track pad that is designed to connect via Bluetooth to notebooks and desktops. The thing supports gesture control and is said to recognize handwriting.

Overpriced Pandigital novel eReader lands at Kohl’s

Posted in ebooks by Shane McGlaun on June 7th, 2010

Last month we talked about a new eReader from Pandigital called the Novel. The thing was very slick and had lots of cool features coupled with a reasonable price. We liked it well enough.

The Novel has a 7-inch color LCD and weighs about a pound. The device runs Android and has a lithium-ion battery inside for hours of use. The device measures 7.625″ x 5.5″ x 0.75″. The best part of the device was its $199.99 price tag for me.

HP set to offer printers with email addresses

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on June 7th, 2010

HP purchased Palm not too long ago as a way to get its hands on webOS. Shortly after the purchase was finished, we learned that HP had bigger plans than smartphones for webOS with an eye towards devices like web connected printers and tablets.

I thought webOS in a printer sounded weird at first. The New York Times reports today that HP will have a new line of web-connected printers that will have their own email addresses. I would bet several of these will be running webOS.

A $50,000 Android Phone

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

If you think that your phone was expensive, think again. The Ulysse Nardin Chairman phone is $50K and doesn’t even run Froyo. Instead you get 2.1. CrunchGear recently went hands on with the phone to see what you get for $50k. Turns out, you also get a dock.

A dock unlike any other, with polished wood panels, speakers and USB ports. Still not worth $50K, but we won’t tell the rich. Hit up the link to get the full scoop if you are shopping for an insane luxury phone.

iPod nano gets modded to play inside 8-track player

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

It’s been some time since we’ve used 8-Tracks. Here’s something that can hopefully make them cool again. This modder has made a Beach Boys deck connect to his iPod nano, complete with a headphone socket and USB port on the front for portability and charging.

When you plug it in, the 8-track transfers iPod signals into the source for plug-and-play awesomeness. So now you have an 8-track that holds 500 songs. Your daddy’s eight track didn’t do that.

PhotoFast makes iPad compatible with a Microsoft webcam

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

There may still be an integrated camera coming for the iPad, but until then, one company has your back. PhotoFast has an early prototype that is basically just a Microsoft LifeCam in the dock port, but when it releases later this year, it will be a fully custom two megapixel webcam that manages VGA video and will apparently be compatible with some IM apps.

PhotoFast is also hard at work on an iPad TV tuner and a dock that reads flash memory. Those will also be available for the iPhone/iPod when it is released.

Circular Lego saw really works

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on June 6th, 2010

A saw made out of Lego bricks, but with a real blade is a hospital trip just waiting to happen. This thing really works. So I hope they’ve alerted the local ER. This Lego saw can cut through a 2×4, so limbs should be no problem.

Just to be extra safe, the tips have been removed from the blade and it’s set to stop if you touch it. But still. I don’t trust this Lego saw one bit. But it is a cool creation. I’m now looking forward to the Lego nail gun and jackhammer. Once those are ready, I can make my own Lego themed construction site where our hard hats snap onto our heads and the buildings are many colored bricks.

When the time comes and you’re done with it, you can even recycle up to 84% of its guts if you like. It’s a basic handset that makes and receives calls and let’s you text message without any fancy features.
