3M Shows off USB 3.0 powered monitor

Posted in 3M by Conner Flynn on June 9th, 2010

We’ve seen USB-powered displays, but those weren’t powered by USB 3.0. 3M has unveiled some new monitor technology, by showing off an 18.5-inch 1366 x 768 pixel display powered by dual USB 3.0 ports. USB 3.0 has 5Gbit bandwidth, so it is much better at high-definition pictures, compared to the 480Mbits for USB 2.0.

Two USB 3.0 ports are used because a single USB 3.0 port offers 7W, while this monitor needs 8W. It’s looking like we will all be using USB displays like this in the future.

Samsung’s SP-H03 pocket-sized Pico projector

Posted in Projectors by Conner Flynn on June 9th, 2010

Samsung’s SP-H03 pico projector is tiny. About the size of a hockey puck. But that doesn’t stop it from outputting 854×480 resolution with 1GB of internal memory in the palm of your hand.

The SP-H03 weighs only half a pound. Aside from the WVGA resolution, it boasts 30 lumen brightness, microSD memory expansion up to 16GB, and 1W stereo for your media presentations. It’ll be available this month for $300. Not bad at all for those specs in a projector this small.

Joby Gorillatorch Flare debuts

Posted in Flashlights by Shane McGlaun on June 9th, 2010

About this time last year, I talked about the Joby Gorillatorch. The Gorillatorch is a plain flashlight that is on one of the articulating Joby tripods with magnetic feet. The Gorilltorch was a very cool little gadget.

Joby has announced a new version of the Gorillatorch called the Gorillatorch Flare. The Flare is almost identical to the original Gorillatorch with the exception of the Flare having a single white LED and three red LEDs inside. The white LED offers up to 100 lumens of light and the three reds lights can be used to create a red distress beacon.

Major WebOS developer leaves Palm for Apple

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 9th, 2010

The iPhone is on a completely different level from the Palm Pre in terms of popularity and sales. Still, there are a few things that I don’t like about the iPhone that the Pre does better. The most obvious is the way webOS handles notifications that let you keep working while the iPhone makes you stop and tend to the notification.

The man who designed the notification system in webOS has left Palm and landed at Apple. We can only hope that his first job will be to revamp the notification system the iPhone uses into something that works better.
