Google Editions e-book service launching this summer

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Google isn’t content to just make public domain books freely available for e-book readers. Google has just confirmed that its Google Editions e-book service will be launching in late June or July. Looks like the service will let users buy digital copies of books they find through Google’s existing book search service, and let retailers sell Google Editions on their own site and retain the “bulk of the revenue.”

We don’t have a ton of details yet. Nothing on pricing or which publishers involved, but Google has said that it planned to make between 400,000 and 600,000 books available with prices to be set by the publishers.

iRobot iPad clone

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

The M003 Apad, a.k.a. iRobot, is a 7-inch, Android-OS iPad clone that costs $199.99 and is now available for shipping. The Apad supports Google Maps, HD video support and even has an integrated integrated webcam. There’s also 2GB of built-in storage though SD cards are supported.

Something tells me that this device won’t sell over a million in it’s first month, though many would buy this one just to get an iPad alternative.

Scope Watch tells time using latitude and longitude

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Here’s a cool retro looking watch. Looks a bit large though. The Scope watch looks like something from a movie. Specifically it looks like that familiar computer screen where our hero locks onto an object, say a car, and enhances it several times until he can read the license plate numbers.

The design is simple and that’s why it’s cool. It won’t enhance images, but the watch uses the tried and true latitude and longitude to give you the time.

Sony selling ‘PlayStation Protection Plan’

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Sony’s game consoles are solidly built and super reliable, sure there’s the occasional issue, but they don’t exactly suffer the RRoD. Even so, things can happen. And if you’re willing to pay for peace of mind, Sony has a new service agreement.

The “PlayStation Protection Plan,” extends the full warranty on your PlayStation 3 or PSP for another year or two. Sony’s plan requires you to mail your system to Sony and wait for the repair or replacement system; GameStop’s warranty allows you to turn in your system and leave with a replacement. Apparently controllers and cables are included with the GameStop protection plan, while Sony only covers the system itself.

50 awesome papercraft robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

We’ve seen our share of cool papercraft projects around here. We just wish we had time to put them all together. Over at our robot site Botropolis, we’ve compiled fifty papercraft robots, which should keep you busy for a while.

Robots will be the death of you and I one day, so we may as well build some cool paper toys to play with and display. Many of these are as good as having an actual action figure and they cost much less.

BlackBerry tablet to arrive in 2011?

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

Take this with the usual grain of salt, but word is that RIM is working on a tablet device, codenamed the BlackPad or Cobalt. Apparently the device will feature an 8.9-inch display and might even be thinner and smaller than Apple’s iPad.

If such a device is even coming out of RIM, it would be unveiled in 2011, with a 3G connection, Wi-Fi, and might even sync with a BlackBerry smartphone. Now this is mighty interesting. If they play their cards right, this could really compete with Apple.

Senior Citizen cell phone with big numbers and SOS panic button

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

A cell phone for seniors is almost a contradiction. Sure, we can make the buttons bigger and do all kinds of other things, but that ain’t gonna stop grandpa from flushing it down the crapper when he gets Alzheimers. Nevertheless, I guess we still have to try.

And so here’s another cellphone meant for Senior Citizens, complete with big numbered buttons, a torch light for when they get lost at night, FM radio, and a SOS button which can be programmed to dial four emergency numbers and send text messages to those numbers programmed into the cellphone. When you press the SOS button in an Emergency situation, the phone will issue a loud warning sound and automatically send broadcast messages to the default phone numbers programmed in.

verTick Wall Clock concept

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

Clocks are all pretty much the same. Square, round, rectangular. verTick is an unusual and interesting clock, operating with sticks and numbers instead of a digital readout or hands.

The middle of the clock has an aluminum section with windows. The sticks move up and down on motors to put the right number in the windows to display the time. The sticks just go up and down.

Beer + Buggy = You getting drunk without having to move your ass off the couch. Let’s face it, it’s 2010 and by now we should be able to go to Walmart and buy a robot butler who will bring us beer, but that isn’t the case. So we will just have to work with what we have.

And what we have is RC vehicles. They will have to do. Like this fully functional Beverage Buggy, which delivers two cans or bottles of your favorite drink(beer) in a radio-control dune buggy. But who is going to load that beer into the buggy?

Wii remote support coming to Android

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

Adding to the growing number of apps in the Android market, is the Wii Controller Demo, produced by Ryan Frawley. This fee software allows Android users to create a Bluetooth connection between their phone and a Wii Remote and then input information on the phone’s display.

This opens up some exciting long-term implications for gaming on Android. Frawley is still working on the software but it can already detect the presence of a Nunchuk and Classic Controller. Once the app is working the way they want it to, other developers will be allowed to use it in their games and emulators.
