Avatar 1259B Watch looks as odd as its name

Posted in Watches by Shane McGlaun on May 12th, 2010

Sometimes gadgets make it to market that should have stayed at the concept stage. Such is the case with the really weird looking Avatar 1259B Watch that is available to purchase at Yanko Design.

This is one of the rare concept watches that Yanko shows off that you can actually buy. It uses 12 LED lights on the circular face to show hours, five LEDs show tens of minutes, and nine other LEDs show the minutes.

Posted in Pentax by Shane McGlaun on May 12th, 2010

Pentax is all about getting the most mileage of of its K-x DSLR. Why update hardware inside the camera when you can just slap a new color on the outside and apparently get people to buy the things. We have already seen the K-x in a color best left to PushUps.

The new version of the K-x that Pentax has unveiled today is ever uglier than that bright orange version from last month. The new K-x is only going to be offered in Japan and looks like a rainbow exploded.

Chevy Volt may be powered by Google soon

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on May 12th, 2010

General Motors has found a technology partner to help extend the Chevy Volt’s futuristic OnStar functionality and Motor Trend says it’s Google. The company will reportedly “sell its Android operating system for in-car use.”

This is the first we’ve heard of Google selling Android, but GM doesn’t seem to mind. They’re ready to use the open-source OS anyway. This should help make GM cars more attractive to buyers and we can’t wait to see what kind of apps they come up with.

Google Tablet coming from Verizon

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

Make way for the first serious iPad competitor. According to Verizon Chief Exec Lowell McAdam, the carrier is working with Google on “a tablet computer.” The WSJ report is light on details as you might expect this early in the game, but Bloomberg scored the news that this tablet is said be Android-based, and that more details will be released later this week.

McAdam said that tablets are “part of the ‘next big wave of opportunities,’” and that Verizon’s “looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience.”. We should know more soon, but an Android/Verizon tablet already has us salivating.

93-page report slams iPad user interface

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

Well, some one is cranky. That would be Danish doctor Jakob Nielsen, called “the guru of Web page usability” by The New York Times. He has some things to say about the iPad. Specifically the iPad’s user interface. 93 pages worth of something to say. Here’s a summary so you don’t have to read it all:

iPad apps are inconsistent and have low feature discoverability, with frequent user errors due to accidental gestures. An overly strong print metaphor and weird interaction styles cause further usability problems.

Nielsen says that the iPad doesn’t benefit from its iPhone UI, and that the features it shares with the iPhone don’t work as well on the big screen. It all boils down to “a usability problem we haven’t seen since the mid-1990s: Users don’t know where they can …

PS3 and Xbox 360 to get price cuts this year?

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

Word on the street is that PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 could get some price changes later this year. According to the rumor, Sony could be planning an entry-level £200 (or $295) version of the PS3 that offers a smaller hard drive with a single controller.

While the Microsoft side of the rumor says that it might include the upcoming Natal with the Xbox 360, though there is talk of a possible version of it without Project Natal going for less than £100 ($147). And IF the rumor is true, Nintendo is also looking at a price drop in order to compete with the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Dragon Quest game has a Sword controller

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

The only thing missing from this controller is Merlin’s voice saying “He who can free Excalibur from this controller shall forever be king and head nerd for all time”. Then if you can pull the sword out, you can play, otherwise too bad.

This is a concept image of the controller for the Wii port of the arcade game Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory. Yes, it’s crazy. But hey, keep in mind that it’s the offspring of D and D nerds who will be using it. The controller will be made by HORI and will sell for about $138. Gamers will “push down on the sword for your special finishing sword attack.”

Kaleidescape M500 Movie Player rips Blu-Ray discs

Posted in Media Players by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

Kaleidescape, the multi-room home movie server has optimized its UI and added Blu-ray support with the M500 and M300 players. Kaleidescape’s new M500 player works just like the old versions: Just load a disc—CD, DVD, or now Blu-ray and the player copies it onto a home server. Pretty straightforward.

But movie studios wrote a provision in the Blu-ray licensing agreement requiring the disc to be physically present whenever a copy of the movie is played. So, if you want to watch a copy of a Blu-ray movie on an M500, or one of the satellite M300 players, the disc must be present in an M500 somewhere on your network.
