Garmin nuvi 295W materializes with some cool features

Posted in Garmin by Shane McGlaun on May 14th, 2010

We have seen the Garminfone already with its questionable mix of smartphone and PND that I don’t think most folks will care for. Today Garmin dropped a new GPS device that no one was expecting out of the blue called the nuvi 295W.

The 295W is sort of like that Garminfone minus the phone part. The PND is clearly aimed at trying to get users to take the 295W with them outside the car. The device has a 3MP camera and can geotag images it takes.

iPad 3G buyers in UK can get cheap data plan by being sneaky

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on May 14th, 2010

Here in the US AT&T did us a solid with nice data plans at a good price. Over in the UK fans of the iPad looking to get the 3G version might be looking to save some coin on a data plan and there is a way to save even more than the already cut rate pricing on iPad data.

ITProPortal reports that if you have an account with Orange that has a SIM card at the £5 monthly rate for 500MB of data you can use that SIM in your iPad 3G with some tweaking. Presumably, you can buy the dongle before the iPad just to get the SIM card as well.

The Sprint Evo 4G will be on sale for $200, with contract, on June 4th. It will feature two-way video chat on 3G and 4G networks, hence the forward-facing camera. Looks like it will run Qik, a third party app, which probably means that you can make cellphone-to-computer calls.

WiMax is going to cost you an extra $10 a month as a “Premium Data add-on,”. You can still use the Evo 4G as a hotspot for up to eight devices, but it’s going to cost an extra $30 a month to do so.

Projector gets strapped to a Wii-gun

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2010

Man, try not to get sick watching the video below. This projector strapped to a Wii-gun is pretty damn cool. It comes from Nirav Patel, who decided to take first-person shooting to the next level. He has combined a Wiimote Zapper, a handheld ShowWX laser projector and a gyrometer to display a screen wherever the Zapper is pointing.

Patel calls it a “glasses-free virtual reality first-person shooter,”. With it, he can look around and navigate the game-world just by moving the Zapper and using its joystick. Right now the game is running off of Patel’s laptop, with his controller tethered to it. Oh and he’s wearing the laptop on his back. I would love to see where else he can take this.

Comcast creates awesome iPad app

Posted in Comcast by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2010

Here’s Comcast CEO Brian Roberts demonstrating Xfinity Remote, a super nice iPad application that lets you control your cable box. It takes the set-top box interface and turns it into an easy-to-use iPad app that features an interface with a keyboard.

TiVo really should have done something like this. You can change channels, program recordings, search the schedule and select a pay-per-view program, all on the browser-based iPad app. Awesome.

Seems like more and more mini Bluetooth keyboards are coming onto the market. This Mini Bluetooth Keyboard for Smartphones is the latest, fresh out from Chinavasion. It’s about the same size as an iPhone and gives you 49 qwerty keys.

It plays nice with Macs, PCs, PS3s and the iPad as well as Symbian60, Android and Windows Mobile 6.0 phone. It recharges via USB but sadly it lacks function keys. The price is only $23, which makes this one tempting.

U.S. distribution is currently limited to Apple’s online and retail stores and Best Buy locations offering the Apple “store-within-a-store” concept. We’ll have to see how this works out as Apple is busy trying to keep up with customer demand for the iPad.

Hulu isn’t ready for HTML5 yet

Posted in Hulu by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2010

We’ve all heard the back and forth over which is better, HTML5 or flash or just watching stuff on your HDTV. Many think that HTML5 will save streaming video, but Hulu VP Eugene Wei recently went on record stating that HTML5 can’t handle Hulu’s current needs.

DRM seems to be a big part of the problem. HTML5 doesn’t support it. Hulu needs it. Otherwise we would all just be able to right click to save any Hulu show. Good for us, but for Hulu not so much.
