Mitsubishi WD-82738 82 Inch 3D TV for $3800

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

Mitsubishi has announced three new lines of “affordable” 3D Home Cinema TVs. The most interesting model is the 82-inch DLP with 3D for just under $4,000. Sure DLP will bulk it up some, but if that’s a trade off you are willing to make, that’s not a bad price.

The WD-82738 adds StreamTV Internet Media, with applications like Pandora to Vudu to NY Times. The WD-82838 is another 82-inch set for $4,500, which also includes Immersive Sound Technology, and an integrated 16-speaker 5.1 surround sound system.

Moonwatch, the Werewolf’s new best friend

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

One of the problems with being a werewolf, aside from the fact that you change once a month and go on a killing spree, is that it’s a pain to keep track of the lunar cycle. What if you forget to mark it on a calendar? Well, the Moonwatch will show you the time either by hour or by phase of the moon, so you’ll never be caught off guard again.

That way if you want, you can lock yourself in a cage ahead of time. The rest of us thank you ahead of time for being a responsible Werewolf and using this watch, which is not available yet, but hopefully soon.

Segway robots now training Australian snipers

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

Snipers are used to using cardboard cutouts of bad guys to practice their deadly arts, but they have long needed better practice targets that move. As usual, robots are the answer. The Australian Defense Force and Marathon Robotics took a bunch of two-wheeled RMP 200 Segway robots, and placed hoodies on them just for kicks.

The robots are programmed to wander around randomly on the course just like people walking about and minding their own business. When the sniper picks off his target, the remaining robots all scatter automatically. Again just like people who are terrified and screaming.

iPhone OS 4.0 unveiled

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

Just over a year after iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has unveiled the big revision of the OS that powers the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It ships this summer, and the developer preview will be available today. iPhone 3GS and new-gen iPod touch will get all the features, but some of those features won’t make it to the iPhone 3G, the original iPhone, and older iPod touches. Sorry Charlie.

The biggest new feature is the multitasking, which is said to be the “best” implementation in the smartphone space. App switching is activated by double tapping the home button, which pulls up a “dock” of currently running apps, and apparently it can do this without hurting battery life or performance for the front app.

It comes with a remote control to help while driving. It will cost you about $214, but you also get a charging dock that will charge your Walkman when docked.

The Hoff lends his voice to NavTones

Posted in Automotive by Shane McGlaun on April 8th, 2010

We have talked about NavTones before. This company takes the voices of celebrities, or those who were at one time celebrities and makes them into the novice of your GPS unit.

The latest fauxlebrity to lend a voice to NavTones is David Hasselhoff. This dude hasn’t been cool since Knight Rider. You can get The Hoff’s voice for $6.95 and it works on TomTom or Garmin GPS devices.

SWAP Nova Keychain Phone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

Most of us just want the latest and most sophisticated phone available, but maybe some people are looking for an extremely tiny phone for extremely small talk. This SWAP Nova Keychain Phone is a 2G (GSM/GPRS) handset smaller than a box of matches. It’s made by the same people who do the watch phones.

It comes with a stylus, microSD slot and a recessed direct connect USB plug. You can hang it around your neck or on the key fob, and hold it to your ear to talk. It should arrive later this year for about £199.00.

Karvt MacBook skins guaranteed to give Apple fans serious wood

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on April 8th, 2010

When it comes to laptop skins, you can get all sorts of them already. You can get vinyl skins with designs on them or clear skins just to prevent scratches.

A company called Karvt has announced a new line of skins for the MacBook notebooks that is made from real wood. The skins stick to the lid of the laptop like any other notebook skin.

Cellphone encased in marble

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

A cellphone made of marble is bound to be heavy. It’s what your rich caveman dude would be making deals on if cavemen had such devices. There are some advantages to stone cellphones. It can be used as a weapon should you be attacked, it will survive drops from super high and you can carve pretty primitive pictures on it even.

Sadly this is just a concept. The Mobiado CPT001 is not available. The shipments would weigh too much for trucks to haul anyway. Sorry Fred and Barney.

Dish unveils awesome VIP 922 DVR with Slingbox built-in

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on April 8th, 2010

I love my DVR, but the worst thing about it is that it only has a 20GB HDD and I can’t do anything with the programs I record other than watch them on the TV. Dish Network has announced a new DVR that frees your content and hold lots more of it.

The new DVR is called the VIP 922 and the thing has Slingbox tech built-in. Slingbox tech inside the DVR is a first and should let you shoot that content to your PC for viewing and possibly to other devices as well.

Apple says sorry for scratched iPod nanos with $37.50

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on April 8th, 2010

Five years ago, if you bought a new iPod nano it probably got scratched up very quickly and you were probably not happy about it. The unhappiness lead to a class action suit against Apple that has finally paid out.

Don’t get any bright ideas about buying things like a new iPad with your chunk of the settlement. If you had a first-gen nano and were part of the class action, you will get $37.50.

Mini iPad to launch next year?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

I know what you’re thinking. We already have a mini iPad in the iPod Touch. I hear ya. We’re just passing along the scuttlebutt. According to Digitimes a 5-7-inch iPad will be launching in 2011. Digitimes quoted senior analyst Mingchi Kuo, who himself works at Digitimes, as “citing talks with upstream component sources,” who have said the smaller iPad will measure between 5 – 7-inches, and will cost under $400 when it goes on sale early 2011.

It’s a funny idea best left on April 1st and quickly forgotten. Even though we know that way too many people would buy such a “Mini iPad” at that price.

Android Market had 9,330 apps added last month

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

The Android Market still may not have the sheer volume of apps that Apple enjoys, but they are quietly catching up. In March alone, over 9,000 applications were added. Of course, with more apps come more junk and redundancy, but that is to be expected. That might be a problem as it grows.

But for now, this is impressive growth and it looks like things are only getting better. The android market went from a 5,532 app increase in February to a 9,330 increase in March. Right now there are over 27,000 apps in the Android Market.

TSA says Netbooks, e-readers and iPads can be kept inside bags during airport checks

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

The American Transportation Security Administration has informed travelers via it’s blog, that when traveling to, from, and within the USA, portable computers smaller than “the standard sized laptop” don’t have to be removed from their bags.

So what is the standard sized laptop? Well, they don’t really say. However, Kindles, iPads, Sony Readers, Nooks, and “Net Books” are named as being exempt from the requirement to unbag your computer for the X-ray scanners. Of course, there’s the disclaimer that staff might want to take a second look at odd-looking devices, but for the most part you can leave that e-reader in your bag.

Apple to Announce iPhone OS 4.0 Features Today

Posted in iPhone by Darrin Olson on April 8th, 2010

Apple iPhone OS 4.0Right on the heels of the new iPad release, Apple has announced an event for later today to discuss the release of “the future of iPhone OS” and what will be coming in the iPhone OS 4.0. What new features will be available with the updated OS is anyone’s guess at this point but as usual there is plenty of speculation leading up to the 10AM PST event.

If history is any teacher this announcement will be to set things up for a release later in the year, probably closer to the Apple Developers Conference, and Apple will use this opportunity to release features that it might not have in the past when it didn’t have as much competition from things like Google’s Android.
