Awesome Space Invaders clock

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2010

Check out this amazing Space Invaders clock. Space Invaders may have been released about six years after Pong, that doesn’t mean that this Space Invaders clock uses newer technology than the Adafruit Pong Clock that has been circulating.

The two clocks actually share the very same guts inside, but the Space Invaders clock has updated firmware. This is one of the coolest Space Invaders clocks we’ve seen. I’d wake up to that. The fight between man and alien never looked so cool.

BoostApak lets your kid carry a booster seat in a backpack

Posted in Apparel by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2010

The safety of your children is one of your top concerns as it should be. So you have to have booster seats in your vehicle, to keep your kids buckled. But it’s a hassle when the kids aren’t using it. What do you do? You make the kid carry it with them, that’s what.

When they arrive at their destination they can just take it with them as part of their backpack thanks to the BoostApak, which comes with a hard plastic shell for kids aged 4 to 11. It’s ergonomically designed to “protect growing spines and encourage better posture.” Not sure we believe that since it is a backpack.

1Cross Tech MIDhybrid Android-powered e-reader looks like a book

Posted in ebooks by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2010

If you feel that reading something that looks and feels like a bound book is better than a Kindle, then this may be up your alley. 1Cross Tech’s MIDhybrid is an e-reader that looks like a book. There’s an E-Ink screen on the left and a small LCD plus keypad on the right, with a hinge in the middle that allows it to fold in half either way.

It’s Marvell-powered and runs Android 1.6 which allows you to render content from the LCD over to the E-Ink screen. The device also features 3G, Bluetooth, and a front webcam. No price or release date just yet though.

Dream and Fly tiny hotel room concept is pretty darn cool

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on March 8th, 2010

I once missed a flight from Dallas to Las Vegas on the way to CES by a few minutes because they changed the gate at the last minute. I ended up sitting in the airport for six hours until the next flight left. That was the most miserable six hours of my life; counting the time I went with my wife to watch Titanic at the theater.

I can certainly see tiny hotel rooms for people stuck in an air port like the Dream and Fly rooms being very popular. The scant concept rooms are little cubes only a bit wider than a twin size bed with a bed, shower, and sink inside.

Maze of Time watch is surprisingly easy to read

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on March 8th, 2010

At first glance, this watch design concept called Maze of Time looked to be very confusing. The watch has different color lines that overlap in a sort of maze configuration. The watch face has a decoding color key on it to tell you what color is for what number.

Yellow and blue numbers are for the hours and red and green numbers are for minutes. Each colored set of lines makes a number and once you see how it works the thing is very easy to read.

iTable offers multitouch for 32 fingers

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on March 8th, 2010

We have seen all sorts of cool gear turn up at CeBIT in Germany ranging from PC hardware to new notebooks and netbooks. One of my favorite devices to debut at the show was the iTable. The thing is like a giant iPad that you can sit your drinks on.

The iTable has a 42-inch HD resolution screen and a full PC inside its 1.5-inch thick top. The screen support input from 32 fingers at once. It can also get input from a stylus, pen, bottle, or cup as well.

Energizer USB charger software installs backdoor

Posted in Batteries by Shane McGlaun on March 8th, 2010

Energizer is one of the most poplar brands for batteries of all sorts including rechargeable batteries. The company unveiled some cool chargers for rechargeable batteries a while back called the USB Charger and the Duo Charger.

The chargers connected to your PC USB port and had software you could download to see the charge status of the batteries. Energizer has announced that the software for Windows machines has a major security vulnerability in it. The Mac version is unaffected.

Hands On: iFrogz EarPollution CS40 headphones

Posted in Review by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2010

iFrogz sent us a pair of their new EarPollution CS40 headphones for review. They come in several stylish colors and actually look pretty nice compared to what’s out there on the headphones market, so we were eager to give them a go and see if they are worth the $39.99 price.

The CS40 claims to offer “cranium busting sound with supreme comfort” and they have a high gloss finish with black dura-strength rubber cups and headband. They also promise light-weight and high quality.

Strobeshnik HDD clock

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2010

We love unusual clocks around here and this one from Russian designer Viacheslav Slavinsky is certainly awesome. This must be the Rolls-Royce of hand-made gadget clocks.

By replacing the disc stack with a single disc that has the numbers punched into it, it shows the time by illuminating the numbers with LED panels from behind. The effect is just plain awesome. There are so many neat clocks like this, I can’t believe that anyone still has just a boring plain wall clock.

Acer developing frameless notebook with touchscreen keyboard

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2010

Looks like Acer has some new tricks up their sleeve. Soon they will introduce some ultra-thin frameless notebooks that feature touchscreen keyboards using the back of the panel’s glass substrate. These notebooks are scheduled to make their debut in the second half of the year.

The notebooks would display frames by printing colors onto the back of the notebook’s reinforced glass substrate by Corning. This would reduce the notebook’s size to something even thinner than was possible before and would also reduce material costs.

Oakley Nokia N97 Winter Olympics Edition

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on March 7th, 2010

They have a special edition phone for every occasion so we kind of expected this one. Oakley and Nokia have teamed up to launch the limited edition Nokia N97 Winter Olympics 2010 edition. If you want one you better not mess around, because as usual they won’t produce very many.

In fact Nokia will release just 200 units. The phone sports the Oakley Thunderbird logo for the Vancouver Olympics laser etched on the back. It also comes preloaded with exclusive Oakley team videos and photos.

Palm-sized keyboard is like a laptop in your hand

Posted in Keyboards by Conner Flynn on March 7th, 2010

HTPC keyboards get more practical every day as they evolve. Check this out. This $92 6-inch-wide Rii Mini Wireless Keyboard fits in the palm of your hand, like a Wiimote. It has LED backlit keys for use in the dark, rechargeable batteries, and a touchpad.

There’s even a laser pointer. Proof that HTPC keyboards are definitely headed in the right direction. And you need a keyboard with your home theater PC. This one looks pretty convenient.

New pics of Microsoft Courier

Posted in Microsoft by Conner Flynn on March 7th, 2010

Some new pics have surfaced of Microsoft’s dual-screen Courier, and it looks like it should be a decent competitor to the iPad. Some new details accompany the new pics as well. The device is less than inch thick, weighs just over a pound, and the two screens are about the size of a 5 x 7 photo.

There’s apparently a built-in camera and the NVIDIA Tegra 2 graphics processor will be driving a version of the Zune HD and Windows Phone 7 interfaces.
