Xbox Live service ending for original Xbox and games

Posted in Microsoft by Shane McGlaun on February 5th, 2010

There are probably many gamers out there who still play games on their original Xbox console or still play original Xbox titles on the Xbox 360. Microsoft is announced that starting on April 15 the Xbox Live service for original games and consoles is being shut down.

The decision wasn’t made lightly according to Marc Whitten. The reason for stopping the service for the old titles and consoles is that updates need to be made to the service to support future plans. Those updates are said to not be supported by the original console and games.

Frank Miller has always been one of my favorite Comic book guys. In recent years, it’s been fun to see his movies on the big-screen. If you’re a fan of 300 or Sin City, GelaSkins has some awesome-looking iPhone cases and laptop skins.

Robonaut2: NASA’s humanoid robot astronaut

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

We’ve sent robots into space before, but nothing humanoid like this guy. If monkeys can get shot into space, then why not? That way astronauts can get creeped out by robots just like we do down on Earth. Should make them feel more at home.

Robonaut2 was developed by NASA and GM. It’s basically a trainable, expendable crew member who can be sent out to do dangerous stuff that astronauts don’t want to risk their lives doing. Robonaut2 is ambidextrous and can use the same tools as human astronauts, while able to lift up to 20lbs.

Brain scan shows vegetative patient answering yes or no questions

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

This raises some interesting issues regarding how we care for those in vegetative states. A new study observed the brain of an unconscious patient responding to yes and no questions just like a normal person. Well, almost. Of 54 test subjects in the New England Journal of Medicine study, one man who was diagnosed as being in a vegetative state five years earlier actually answered yes or no questions. And did so accurately.

The answers came from a brain scan conducted by an MRI machine. Answering “yes” and “no” shows activity in different parts of the brain. For instance the patient was asked if his father’s name was Thomas and the scan showed his brain answering “no.” When asked if his father’s name was Alexander, the scan showed “yes.”

Posted in Blu-ray by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

If you have a ton of Blu-ray discs, they start to pile up and don’t always make it back into the case. That’s where a Blu-Ray disc changer can come in handy, allowing you to keep them all in one place and have them ready.

A company called S1Digital has announced a new Blu-ray changer that will hold 100 of your favorite movies within. It has an unoriginal product name, dubbed simply “the 100 Disc Blu-ray Changer”. The system is designed to be connected to a digital media center that runs Windows 7 or Vista and it even ships with My Movies software.

At last a drill-free cavity fix

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

That little plastic tool you see above could make the dentist’s drill a thing of the past. No more drilling into your teeth, causing pain and making you nervous. The DMG Icon delivers a small amount of hydrochloric acid directly on the cavity and burns away just the right amount of enamel to reach the area where the cavity is eating away at your tooth.

Once that’s done, the dentist uses a separate applicator to inject quick-hardening resin-type goo into the hole, and then with a short zap of high-energy blue light, it hardens so well that your tooth is as good as new. Sounds too good to be true, but if it really works that well it could make dental visits happier.

Cell Phone with built-in cigarette lighter

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you see some guy lighting a smoke with his phone. We showed you one like this last year, but we weren’t sure if it was real or not. This one’s called the Machismo, because obviously its made for manly men.

Just slide open the safety hatch in back and a few seconds later you have a freshly-lit cigarette. $69 gets you these specs: Tri-band GSM phone, Dual SIM slots, 2.5-inch touchscreen, 1.3-megapixel camera, Multimedia playback and likely a burnt finger or two.

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

It wasn’t that long ago when Corsair’s 128GB Voyager GT was considered the fastest in the world. Well now it looks like the 128GB Voyager GTR will take its place. The GTR has read speeds of 34MB/s and write speeds of 28MB/s, where the existing 128GB Voyager GT which has 32MB/s and 25.6MB/s read and write speeds.

Those speeds will cost you a premium of $426. But hey, how much is that speed worth to you, with USB 3.0 around?

Chilipad: One side is warm, one side is cold

Posted in Furniture by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

What do you do when your spouse is hot and you are cold? Turning the heat up or down unfortunately affects you both. The Chilipad is like an electric blanket capable of both hot and cold. It works by pumping water through a series of tubes and can keep everyone happy.

The manufacturers claim that it runs under 20dBa, which should keep things quiet. You can pick up the dual-zone pad, which allows you to adjust the temperature of both sides independently as mentioned. It’s not cheap, but its better than hearing your wife complain right?

Apple refunding 15% on broken 27-inch iMacs

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

It sucks getting stuck with any broken device. If you’re a Mac fan, being stuck with a broken 27-inch iMac will make you want to cry. Many have been waiting and hoping that Apple sorts out their display issues. Too many people have been affected.

If you are having problems, it looks like there may be a silver lining in your darkened Mac cloud. Apparently Apple is giving customers in the US 15% refund bonuses. Keep in mind that 15% on a $2000 machine is roughly $300. That isn’t bad at all.

HP Core i3-based G62t laptop

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

The new G62t may be in the same family as HP’s budget-minded G60 laptop, but it has more in common with the high-end Envy 15 as far as appearance. It certainly is stylish. The specs are pretty respectable too. You get a standard Core i3 processor (upgradable to Core i5 or i7), 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 15.6-inch LED-backlit display, and a DVD burner (upgradable to Blu-ray).

Their is at least one downside, the non-upgradeable integrated Intel HD graphics. Then again the starting price is just $699, making that drawback something many of us can live with. Looks good.

Waterproof Freestyle Audio MP3 player available for pre-order

Posted in Media Players by Shane McGlaun on February 4th, 2010

It’s still cold here in Texas, but I know in a few months we will be back up in the 90′s or higher and we will all be wishing the cold weather was back. With the warm weather within sight, many people are probably already dreaming about hitting the beach or lake for some fun.

Many people like to take music with them, but most MP3 players are too fragile to stand up to water and drops. Marinemart has announced that it is taking pre-orders on the Freestyle Audio Waterproof MP3 player. The device can play MP3, WMA, and WMA DRM files.

I have a SSD that has been sitting around my office for months now that I haven’t used. I know that it would make my machine faster, but I don’t want to have to mess with moving all my software and installing an OS on the drive.

SilverStone has a new product called the HDDBOOST that claims to be able to improve the performance of a HDD by up to 70% by combining it with an SSD. The HDDBOOST installs into an internal drive bay and connects to a SSD and the HDD already in your system.
