BioShock 2 ships globally

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on February 9th, 2010

One of the coolest games that I played in the last several years on the PC was BioShock. The game was tons of fun and had a very original storyline and fantastic graphics. 2K Games has announced today that the latest entry in the BioShock franchise, BioShock 2 is now shipping.

The game is available globally on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 systems and carries an M rating. This time around, the player is in the shoes of a Big Daddy, one of the creepiest characters from the original game. The events in the single player game take place as a sequel to the original.

NEC offers new 70-inch P701 display

Posted in NEC by Shane McGlaun on February 9th, 2010

I am a big fan of large displays in the living room and for my computer. However, there are uses for displays that have nothing to do with computer work or home theater. NEC has unveiled its latest large screen display that is aimed at the digital signage industry called the P701.

The huge screen measures 70-inches diagonally and supports full 1080p resolution. The contrast ratio is 2000:1 and the screen has an average brightness of 420 cd/m2. NEC integrates thermal tech to shut the display down if it overheats to prevent damage.

WikiReader gets update with improvements in usability

Posted in Handheld Entertainmnet by Shane McGlaun on February 9th, 2010

You might recall the WikiReader from when it first appeared back in October. The device is a small handheld gadget that lets a user check out Wikipedia entries without an internet connection.

Openmoko, the firm behind the gadget, has announced that a new update for the WikiReader is now available. The update adds new Wikipedia entries to the database and improves usability. The keypad is improved and now functions more like the iPhone keyboard.

Publisher cuts books down to 2,000 words and less for Kindle

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2010

Books are great and all, but who wants to read all of those words? If only we had a company that would shorten books for us. We do. That company is called FT Press and it’s turning professional and self-help books into “Elements” and “Shorts.” Elements has between 1,000 to 2,000 words and sells for $2, while Shorts are a little longer at $3 for around 5,000 words.

This is obviously micro-blogging’s fault. Thanks Twitter. Consider this micro-reading. Timothy C. Moore, publisher of the FT Press, told The New York Times that it was “a good idea to be able to provide people with shorter, more expedient, more time-sensitive” versions of books.

LG Mini GD880 Phone with 16:9 Aspect Ratio

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2010

Who’s this sexy beast? The LG Mini GD880, which runs LG’s S-Class OS, and not Android for some reason. Didn’t they get the memo, that everyone is going Android? I guess peer pressure doesn’t always work. Still this phone has some nice specs, like the 16:9 aspect ratio.

On a display of just 3.2-inches. We don’t know a lot about it, but we do know it has a 5.0-megapixel camera with face detection, Wi-Fi, and HSDPA 7.2Mbps connectivity.

Notion Ink’s Adam Tablet to have Flash, 1080p, twice the battery life of the iPad

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2010

What’s not to love here? Flash, a longer battery life, and 1080p for starters. This is how Notion Ink is hoping its Android-powered Adam tablet will win your heart. Apparently they’re toying with the idea of launching two different models, one 12.9mm thin and one 11.6mm thin, which suggests different display options.

CEO Rohan Shravan told SlashGear that with the Nvidia chip and Pixel Qi screen, the Adam will boast a battery life at least twice as long as the iPad. Then there’s the 1080p video where the iPad has only 576p, and as mentioned Flash. This could be your new favorite tablet.

Panasonic’s 3D full HD TVs get prices and dates

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2010

Panasonic Japan, just like everyone else, is going 3D crazy. Today they presented 6 3D products to be rolled out soon. And the company has priced and dated these new TVs, Blu-ray recorders and players for the Japanese market.

The VIERA TH-P54VT and TH-P50VT2 feature 54 inches and 50 inches of screen size. Both plasma TVs are full HD with 3D. Sadly you need to wear Active shutter glasses for that 3D experience. Some other specs include a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, VIERA link, web connectivity, 4 HDMI ports, multiple TV tuners, eco-mode, full range 16×4cm×2 speakers and a 10cm sub-woofer. Be prepared to pay a premium for the 3D experience.

Google to Make Gmail More Social

Posted in Gmail by Darrin Olson on February 9th, 2010

Google reportedly has a planned press conference on Tuesday to announce some new features to its online email service which will turn it into more of a social hub of communication between friends. The new “widget” that will be added to the free Gmail tool will allow users to keep up with their friends through a stream of quick updates, similar to sites like Facebook and Twitter.

This is not a surprising move for Google who is continuously trying to keep online users centered around Google’s tools, providing the company with more information as well as additional content and exposure to online ads.

Google could also potential integrate other online social media content into it’s stream from users, such as videos from YouTube or pictures from Picasa. It could even tie into external sources with open API’s such as …

Apple may lower price of the iPad

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2010

We all love a bargain, and with the prices of Apple gear being what they are, you would love to save some money right? According to Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope, Apple executives have said that the pricing will be “nimble” on the iPad. It depends on the demand.

Now that’s not the same as an official confirmation that there will be a price drop, but it makes a lot of sense. If they lower the $499 price point they might actually have competitors worried. A lower price would certainly help any fence-sitters make up their minds to buy.

Heineken robot serves you a cold one

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2010

This “Heineken Bot” sports Heineken’s green colors and was made by the folks at Middlesex University. The beer-bot was recently shown off at the Kinetica Art Fair in London, where it kept humans inebriated and topped off.

If a human moves their hand above its sonar-sensing head, and then place a cup in its holder they are rewarded with beer. Is there any better reward? No. No there is not.

Wake up to Darth Vader’s shadow

Posted in Star Wars by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2010

If you’ve ever wanted to wake up the dark side, now you get your wish with the Darth Vader Shadow alarm clock. It seems like a typical alarm clock, but when it’s time to wake you up it casts the dreaded shadow of Darth Vader on the wall of your room.

Not sure if that will wake you or if you will think it’s just another geek dream though. The clock is battery operated and has a snooze button as well. Just $27.

Qisda phone with 1,280 x 1,024 resolution

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2010

Just how much resolution is enough on our phones? Apparently we aren’t there yet. The Qisda QCM-330 delivers a 1,280 x 1,024 resolution on its 4-inch screen. That’s more than you probably have on your laptop.

The phone is set to be unveiled next month at CeBIT and then you can expect it in Europe on Vodafone. I wonder how such a high resolution looks on such a small screen. Better, that’s for sure, but is it useful? We can’t wait to get more details on this one.
