Smart handgun won’t fire unless you’re wearing this ugly watch

Posted in Weapons by Conner Flynn on January 29th, 2010

If you see somebody wearing this ugly watch, run. They have a weapon. The idea here is to make guns safer. Or at least harder to fire. The new Armatix .22 comes with a custom watch. When the gun is within a few inches of the watch, a green LED on the back lights up, letting you know that it’s armed and ready to fire.

If you try to use it without wearing the watch, the LED turns red and it can not fire. It would be great for police weapons, so that they don’t get in civilian hands. The military as well. Your enemy will no longer be able to use your weapon against you should they somehow get it.

Great idea. Ugly watch.

This dumb idea and others like it just goes round and round. It continues to impress the hell out of people who don’t know sh#t about guns.

A few inches from the gun you say? You are a few inches from the bad guy who just wrestled the gun away from you or grabbed it from your holster. Bang.

A few inches from the gun you say? Your left hand is more than a few inches from your right hand. So, it’s not just an authorized person; it’s an authorized hand that can fire the gun.

    And on and on…

Good until they steal your watch, especially if they kill you and take your gun. They should just embed a chip in peoples hands, or make them biometric so they are only work with one user.

The beautiful thing about firearms is they are relatively simple machines. This idea just complicates it and like other gadgets will be prone to failure. I accept no failure in a tool that may save my life.

Besides how long will it be before someone figures out how to hack this device?

  4. Yahoo Says:

It is useless in South Africa..

  5. Insider Says:

There’s a corporate video by the manufacturer of this gun on youtube. It demonstrates how the gun goes off when it shouldn’t. Just search for armatix smart gun.
The video is authentic, it can also be watched on the manufacturers german website, but the Yutue version is commented in english.
