Google launches local search for mobile

Want to find a local coffee shop? Maybe you need a new restaurant. As usual, Google can help. The big G has introduced local search for iPhone and Android phones.

Now when you’re on Google’s page on your mobile browser, just hit the “near me now” link to bring up search results that are near your location. Find coffee and ATMs easily at long last. Pretty soon we will get completely lost without our phones to the point where we will be zombies during service outages.

Samsung lauches rugged G-series external HDDs

Samsung has announced a new line of stylish and rugged hard drives at CES 2010. Judging by the image above, stylish means that they match your grandmother’s couch. These will come in 3 different physical sizes, 1.8”, 2.5” and 3.5”.

The drive is rugged enough to survive drops and also survive spills from liquids. The G2 portable will be boast hard drive sizes from 250GB to 640GB, while the G3 station will come in 1-2TB capacities. The G3 will even switch itself off when the computer is off and it’s not in use.

Casio’s Digital Art Frame redraws your photos

Digital photo frames are so yesterday. Any frame can display a photo. But what about one that redraws your photo? Now we’re talking. Casio’s Digital Art Frame takes your own digital photos and transforms them into paintings. Or more precisely, digital images with special effects.

There are eight different art form effects, including oils, pastels and watercolors, and the frame will also play audio files and videos. If you fancy yourself a Van Gogh, or just want to see your images as if in a museum, you’ll want to wait for this one.

Nyko Wand + has MotionPlus built in

Last year Nyko introduced the Wand, their version of the Wiimote. This year they update it, outdoing Nintendo by incorporating Wii MotionPlus technology into one single controller. That’s what Nintendo gets for being slow.

I’m glad I didn’t buy one of those MotionPlus accessories. Now I can get this and have a less bulky controller. The Wand + reduces the controller’s overall size and should give you a more comfortable gaming experience.

Super slim Samsung 9000 with sexy remote

The Samsung 9000 LED LCD will provide support for 3D and will come with a sexy touch-based remote that looks like a tall iPhone with a Samsung logo. The remote has a touch interface and actually shows video from various sources. It can convert anything 2D into 3D.

Along with the 9000, Samsung also showed off some other flatscreens like the 8000, which features edge lit technology, 2D to 3D conversion, and the 7000 that Features Samsung’s ‘Touch of Color’, and a 4-legged stand, as well as the 6500 with DLNA streaming, but no 3D. Lastly the 5000 with low power usage, USB playback, and DLNA.

Motorized keyboard moves to relieve stress

Generally we like our keyboards to sit still, but what if a moving keyboard meant less repetitive stress injury? That’s the idea here. This ergonomic USB keyboard from Smartfish moves slightly, just every so often, depending on your workload, which keeps your wrists from aching and helps you avoid repetitive stress injuries.

Look for it in mid-April for $150. Who knows, it may actually help for once. The two halves move apart and together and the base vibrates just a bit once or twice an hour to massage your wrist muscles. You shouldn’t even be aware of the movement.

LG CF3D, the worlds first full HD 3D projector

Recently Light Blue Optics unveiled a Holographic laser equipped Light Touch projector for interactive touchscreens images. Today LG has announced the CF3D, the world’s first full HD, 3D Single Lens Type Projector.

It features a stunning brightness capability of 2,500 ANSI-lumens and a high contrast ratio of 7,000:1. The LG CF3D also sports TruMotion 120Hz for smoother image projection. The images projected out of the CF3D are said to have improved color quality and a more life-like appearance.

Motorola introduces Android-powered home phone

Look at this strangely designed phone that runs Android. Sure, it isn’t the neatest design we have ever seen, in fact it’s pretty blah, but the Motorola HS1001 is a home phone, so you won’t have to be seen with this thing. It’s basically a cordless phone upgraded to support Android.

The device will be one of the first Android-powered home phones. The HS1001 features dual WiFi to connect to its base station and a home WiFi network. Some specs include: DSPG Arm9 240 Mhz processor, 2.8 inch resistive touch screen (QVGA), 256 MB flah ROM / 128 MB RAM, MicroSD expansion slot, Powered by stock Android 1.6 (no Motoblur).

Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus headed to Verizon exclusively January 25

So, the Palm Pre plus removed the navigation button, features 2x internal RAM, 16GB storage, and a built-in inductive back cover for Touchstone inductive charging. While the Pixi Plus now features Wi-Fi and more colors for back covers, which are all Touchstone enabled.

Both these phones are exclusively for Verizon and a new mobile hotspot app lets you create a Wi-Fi network from Verizon 3G for sharing with up to five devices. That’s pretty cool. Nothing on price yet, but we should know about that soon.

Philips updates Blu-ray players with Netflix streaming

Netflix fans have something else to be happy about. Philips is now rolling out a bunch of Blu-ray players featuring Netflix Watch Instantly streaming. The BDP5110 and 5320 are both BD-Live players and have vTuner Internet radio.

The 5110 will arrive in Q1 for $169, while the BDP5320 comes with a WiFi dongle and will ship around the same time for $249. On the high-end, the BDP7320 sports all of those features plus DLNA access to stream video from networked devices or PCs.

Philips unveils three new lines of Eco LED TVs

The new Philips / Funai combo P&F is promising good looks and green habits with its stylish Eco TV series. The 4000, 5000 and 7000 series climb to be exact. 2010 sees the introduction of Netflix streaming, internet radio and Blockbuster Video On Demand on some models and HDMI 1.4 jacks on the 7000 models.

For once we have some prices and release dates for these guys right from the get-go, which is a big plus. Hit up the link below for the full rundown. The prices aren’t bad at all and te wait isn’t very long.

Polaroid announces new OneStep film along with instant digital cameras and more

Polaroid has been busy with several new products. The most interesting is the PIC 1000, the new Polaroid OneStep film camera. Just like its predecessor, it uses Polaroid Color 600 Instant Film. It will be available at national retailers in 2010.

The newest Zink-enabled camera, the Instant Digital Camera, features 12 megapixels and 3 x 4-inch prints.Then there are a handful of LCD TVs from 42 to 65 inches in size with the Polaroid name. Polaroid is back big time.

3M MPro150 pocket projector is small and portable

Projectors for a long time were large boxy devices that had to be carried around in their own case to keep them safe. This was a huge pain for users who had to use projectors to give presentations frequently. Thankfully, the smaller pocket and pico projectors started coming out that reduced the size of the average projector considerably.

3M has unveiled a new pocket projector at CES called the MPro150 that can throw a 50-inch image and has 15 lumens of brightness. That isn’t going to cut it in bright rooms. The projector has 1GB of internal storage allowing presentations to be uploaded directly to the device.

Cambridge Consultants unveils whitespace radio

TV stations that broadcast on airwaves today each have what’s called whitespace between them. The whitespace is there to keep each broadcast from interfering with the ones next to it. There has been lots of talk about using this whitespace for other uses.

A company called Cambridge Consultants has unveiled a new radio at CES that can use the whitespace to stream HD video and other material around a home. The radio can operate on normal 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands and can also operate on the 600Mhz whitespace band between stations.

Sanyo pulls wraps off new Xacti VPC-CS1

When I need to take a camera or a video camera with me, I am a big fan of compact devices that work well. I have a large DSLR but it is a pain to carry around all day when I need a camera. Sanyo has unveiled a new Xacti VPC-CS1 camera that shoots video and still shots in one package.

The camera is set to go on sale in February 2010 for $299.99 and will come in silver only. The device can record full 1080p HD video using MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Sanyo says that this is the thinnest Xacti yet at only 27mm thick and weighing 142g.
