The project involves just taking two cheap USB chargers, stripping them of their casing and then putting them behind a normal outlet plate.

Cut some USB slots in a regular blanking plate, then do some light electrical work to hook the whole thing up to your power. If you charge a ton of gadgets, this could be pretty handy.

Groom updates Facebook Relationship status at the altar

Posted in Facebook by Conner Flynn on December 2nd, 2009

Human beings have never been so connected with one another and obsessed with info. Then again, maybe we are all just stupid monkeys tweeting our every move, trying desperately to leave our mark on this world before the Grim Reaper comes tweeting @you.. I iz in yer reality takin ur soul.

Whatever the case, this couple is really into the facebook that all the kids are using. It was a normal wedding ceremony until the groom pulled out his phone and changed his relationship status on Facebook to ‘married’ right there at the altar. The bride followed suit, and the crowd gets a good laugh. Then the preacher says “If it’s official on Facebook, it’s official in my book,” he says.

Sprint turned over users data to authorities 8 million times last yearYes you read that correctly. Just in the last year alone, Sprint turned over users GPS data to authorities 8 million times. Now maybe that number turns out to be grossly inflated. Maybe it’s really 4 million times, or 1 million. Even if it’s under a thousand users, this news is scary.

There are legitimate reasons for law enforcement agencies to have access to location data. We could all understand the need when it comes to missing person cases, kidnappings and wanted fugitives. We all want lives to be saved. But there must be some guidelines, because this is truly scary stuff below:

RedEye: Turn your iPhone into a Universal Remote

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on December 2nd, 2009

RedEye: Turn your iPhone into a Universal RemoteRedEye is a device that will turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a fully functional universal remote that can be used to control a wide range of equipment. Anything from your HDTV, Cable Box, and even your DVD player or Blu-ray player.

Here’s how it works. Your iPhone or iPod touch sends commands to the receiver unit via WiFi, then the signals are converted into infrared and sent to your AV equipment. Since everyone and their eighty year old grandmother already has an iPhone, this could truly be one remote to rule them all.

steelseriesmobiledeviceadapThere are lots of portable devices like phones and MP3 players that feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. The iPhone and iPod touch are two notable devices with 3.5mm jacks. Headphones that connect to computers have 3.5mm jacks as well.

The problem is that PC headphones have individual connectors for the headphones and mic so you can’t use them with the iPhone and take advantage of the microphone for VOIP. SteelSeries has announced a new adapter called the SteelSeries Adapter for mobile devices.

BlueAnt updates Q1 with A2DP support

Posted in BlueAnt by Shane McGlaun on December 2nd, 2009

blueantq1-sbI like it when manufactures add new features to the gadgets I own via firmware updates and don’t charge me any more money to get the features. This is what Apple does for the iPhone, Sony for the PS3, and now BlueAnt is doing the same thing for its Q1 Bluetooth headset.

The Q1 headset already has a lot of features, but the device lacked A2DP support for streaming audio from a smartphone to the headset. Streaming music might not be that great considering the headset is not stereo, but I am all for streaming directions from my iPhone navigation app.

ezGear has the gadgety solution to cold hands this winter

Posted in Home by Shane McGlaun on December 2nd, 2009

exgearhandwarmer-sgOne of the things that most of us hate most about winter is the cold. My fingers just don’t work right when my hands get cold. I can’t type with cold fingers and cold fingers is just generally annoying. ezGear has a new rechargeable hand warmer that will keep your phalanges nice and toasty.

The device is small at about 1.6 ounces and only 1/3 of an inch thick. The hand warmer is covered in aluminum for good conduction of heat and looks a lot like an iPod to me. The thing ships with a sock to put it in as well.

Intel offers new SSD firmware for TRIM functionality on Windows 7

Posted in Intel by Shane McGlaun on December 2nd, 2009

intelssdThe hazard of being among the first to apply updates and new firmware to your gear is that you are also among the first to realize there might be a problem. A while back Intel offered a new firmware update for its X25-M and X18-M SSDs and users found a big problem when applied to SSDs with Windows 7.

The big problem was that the firmware update killed Windows 7 installs, which is a big issue considering the operating system is required and all. Intel removed the firmware from its website after the problem arose. Intel has now announced that it is trying again and has a new firmware on its site to add TRIM back to the SSDs.
