WD TV Live Bricked by Firmware Updates

Posted in Western Digital by Conner Flynn on December 6th, 2009

WD TV Live Bricked by Firmware UpdatesIf you have a WD TV Live HD media box, you might want to think twice about downloading a recent firmware update from Western Digital. Forum complaints report nothing but a blank screen after downloading the v1.101.12 update.

Western Digital knows about the problem and has pulled the update from its site. Until the issue is fixed, it is better to stay clear of that “upgrade now” screen until the next patch arrives. Hopefully WD is taking care of those people affected.

Flexible hands-free book light

Flexible hands-free book lightDespite the image above, what we have here is not a lamp designed to highlight boobs. Though that would be cool too. It’s a reading light that actually looks somewhat useful. It features 2 super-flexible arms along with two high-intensity LEDs on each end.

So it will highlight your boobs as if they were in a high-end gallery and let you see what you are reading. It will cost you $14.95 and makes a great gift for the reader in your life who hasn’t gone all Kindle.

WallDock iPhone charger

WallDock iPhone chargerThe WallDock iPhone charger is exactly what it sounds like, an iPhone charger that plugs into your wall. Sounds pretty handy until you realize that all of your electrical outlets are low. The dock allows for access to the touchscreen, but it doesn’t really do you any good unless you’ve taught your baby to use your iPhone and don’t care about him or her sticking a finger in the socket.

Yeah, a desk charger is probably better. Of course you could always use your feet. It’s only $25 if you want to play footsie. Me, I’ll stick to a desktop charger.

Twoddler lets your toddler twitter

Twoddler lets your toddler twitterYou might recognize this Fisher-Price toy from your own childhood. This one has been hacked by some eggheads at Belgium’s Hasselt University and dubbed the Twoddler. The hacked Fisher-Price activity board has buttons linked to predefined Twitter messages.

The idea is that parents who used the Kickbee can continue their obsession and do stuff like put photos of themselves on the buttons, so that the kid can hit the Twoddler and tweet stuff like “@mommy I miss you.”

Mintpass Cube MP3 player

Mintpass Cube MP3 playerThe Mintpass Cube MP3 player is for those who love reading meters. The 2 inch cube also sports push button controls, analog displays for volume, battery charge, and frequency, 3.5mm audio out, and Bluetooth. No word on storage capacity or price.

Call us geeks, but we see this MP3 player and we just can’t help wondering what a Borg ship would look like with a battery meter on the side. Of course the Federation would always know when Borg batteries are running low.

TruePower UCS Power Outlet with built-in USB PortsLast week we told you about a DIY project that puts USB outlets on your wall. Well, we hate to burst your bubble and we know that you spent a lot of time building your in-wall USB charger, but here’s one that’s already made.

This TruPower UCS outlet from FastMac has two USB charging ports along with two standard power outlets. And it costs the same as the DIY version. This one ships early next year some time. And hey, waiting for it is much safer than electrocuting yourself.

Botropolis: This week in robotsWell we made it to another Friday without being killed by a robot army. That’s always something. Over at Botropolis we continue to keep a watchful eye on all things robot. If they gain sentience we will know it. If they begin to dream, we will know it. But if they get us first and silence us, God help you all. Here’s some of what we covered this week:

Robots Using Lightsabers.

Schoolgirl Robot Dances.

Retro Pac-Man watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 4th, 2009

Retro Pac-Man watchHows your geek cred? Well, if you don’t own at least one quality Pac-Man item, you are not an official geek. And this Pac-Man watch is a good one to own. It’s half past clyde and a quarter to a power-pellet, or something like that.

It was made exclusively for ClubNAMCO and tells time using ghosts and power pellets. The invisible second is Pac-Man himself gobbling up dots, cherries and a blue ghost as he circles around. How cool is that? Only 500 of these watches are being produced, and each will be individually marked with a serial number. The price isn’t too bad at $129.99.

Hands On: Stylophone Beatbox

Hands On: Stylophone BeatboxThe Stylophone Beatbox was recently released, some 40 years after the original Stylophone. They sent us one for review purposes. Now I’m not musically inclined myself, but I did find the device to be fun and pretty easy to use. And despite my lack of hip musical skills, it was pretty easy to figure out and start making beats.

Gboard Gmail KeyboardThis Gboard keyboard might not have all 69 Gmail shortcuts, but the 19 that it does feature are probably the most-used. Search, star, archives, trash, all the important ones are here and even in Google colors.

This isn’t an official Google device, but it is both Mac and Windows-friendly and can also be used for non-Gmail shortcuts. It will cost you only $19.99. Just plug into into your USB port, turn on Gmail’s keyboard shortcuts and make the most out of your mail time.

The little device is a 3-inch square that is only .7-inches thick. It can be plugged into the TV via an HDMI cable or with the standard AAV out cable. The smallish player supports 720p and 1080i HD resolutions. Despite the small size, the player has built-in memory card reader and USB connectivity.

Astro Boy netbook hits Taiwan

Posted in Netbook by Conner Flynn on December 3rd, 2009

Astro Boy netbook hits TaiwanThere had been some rumors about an Astro Boy netbook for awhile now and it looks like it’s actually a real netbook. We know that it has landed in Taiwan because someone was spotted with one during the IT Month event in Taipei.

This 10″ netbook even comes with a certificate that claims the Astro Boy netbook is genuine and not a knock-off. Other specs include a DVD Burner, USB flash drive, USB speakers, an external hard drive and a memory card reader. Maybe we will see it around here one day soon, though we won’t hold our breath.
