Amazon Kindle ships free in time for Christmas

Posted in Amazon by Shane McGlaun on December 18th, 2009

kindledx-sbI think the new lot of eReaders are very cool. I would like to have a Barnes & Noble Nook myself, but alas, the things are sold out. If you have someone on your Christmas list that wants an eReader the Amazon Kindle is the only major choice this year.

Amazon announced today that it is offering free expedited shipping on the Kindle that will get it to you in two days. That means if you order by December 22 you will get the Kindle in time for Christmas. The price is still $259.

Amazon also says that the Kindle has broken another monthly sales record. It still won’t tell us exactly how many of the things it is selling, but considering it’s the only major eReader available, I bet it is selling a lot of them.

Amazon needs to convince more publishers to issue their book on the Kindle format. I bought a Kindle over a month ago, but none of the titles I am interested in reading is on Kindle format!

Why did you show a picture of the kindle DX when you’re talking about the $259 kindle? Might be confusing.

How can you not consider the Sony reader a major contender in this field? I find I like the Sony much better than the Kindle, and it reads multiple formats, including ePUB. I believe in the long run either Amazon will make ePUB readable on the Kindle or they will fail. Just look at KOBOBOOKS.COM, Barnes and Noble, even Sony and Google, authors and publishers will prefer their books be put out in format that can be read by multiple readers. Books readers that read only one proprietary cannot survive for long. This isn’t music, folks, a different paradigm is required.
