Sega Mega Drive iPhone dock

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on November 26th, 2009

Sega Mega Drive iPhone dockNaturally whenever you look at your old video game consoles, you think iPhone dock. Who doesn’t? Wired’s Charlie Sorrel certainly thinks that way. He found an old Sega Mega Drive without any controllers or wires, so he turned it into an iPod dock. Naturally.

And yes it works. He just slid an iPod dock inside, secured it with gaffer tape and ran the USB cable out of a hole. Easy stuff. We like the way Charlie thinks. Just don’t let him near your stuff. Seriously. Not unless you want an iPhone sticking out of it.

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on November 25th, 2009

samsunggonyt-sgThe economy has been very hard on traditional print publications like magazines and newspapers. Shrinking subscriber numbers, increased costs, and less advertising have all conspired to drive more than one publication out of the black. Even large papers like The New York Times are looking to new methods to distribute their paper.

The NYT has a digital version of its paper called the Times Reader 2.0. The digital version looks much like the real paper and can be accessed via a computer or netbook. The big catch is that the service is a whopping $179.40 for a year.

Verizon offers $29 subsidized netbook for Black Friday

verizongatewaylt-sgI am a fan of netbooks even though it bothers me that they are all pretty much the same. Netbooks offer plenty of power for most mobile needs on the go in a more portable and less expensive package. If you want a netbook and need 3G broadband service too, a subsidized netbook may be the way for you to go.

Verizon Wireless has announced a new Black Friday deal that runs from Friday until Monday that will let you grab up a Gateway LT netbook for only $29. The machine has a 10.2-inch screen, 160GB HDD, 1GB of RAM and Intel Atom power.

Xbox Elegant Edition CasemodGaming consoles aren’t always the most beautiful things to look at. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here’s proof. This XBEE (XB Elegant Edition) mod ups the consoles exterior look and makes the Xbox 360 stand out from the crowd.

Upon seeing this beauty the usual cries of photoshop went up, but it’s actually real. It was designed by Sweden’s Industri Repro. Each case can have up to three 120mm fans to keep things cool and hey look, that’s no rrod. Why it’s green and full of life.

USB Pet Rock is still useless

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on November 25th, 2009

USB Pet Rock is still uselessRemember the old Pet Rock craze of the 1970s? Well, it’s back and with a USB upgrade no less. I never understood the appeal of Pet Rocks myself, but maybe that’s because I’m not a sucker. This USB-powered update just sits there, like it’s predecessor and does nothing.

Much like the Tauntaun sleeping bag, the USB Pet Rock was an April Fools Day joke that has turned into a real product. For some reason.

Mons Lavabo Monster Sink

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on November 24th, 2009

Mons Lavabo Monster SinkHere’s a monster of a sink. Literally. The Mons Lavabo is an eco-friendly sink concept design that’s controlled by an automatic hand sensor. It’s designed to be appealing to children, but if I were a kid, this sink would scare the bejesus out of me.

It looks like it’s going to eat you as your blood slowly goes down the drain, leaving no evidence for your mom and dad, who are obviously the next victims. But hell, until it does eat your kid, the automatic sensor means that kids won’t waste water. If they can even be persuaded to get near it anyway.

Nintendo DSi LL gets dissected

Nintendo DSi LL gets dissectedAlright so you don’t own a Nintendo DSi LL yet, but you’ve been drooling over it and can’t get enough info, right? Well, here’s a little something for ya. A few lucky folks managed to get their hands on the LL and have immediately and lovingly dissected the device.

Think of it as an autopsy that they’ve performed so that you won’t have to. Have fun checking out the guts of this larger DSi. Unless you’re the squeamish type. We undertstand. It can be hard to look at something you love being so…violated.

Olympus PEN E-P1 gets the Swarovski treatmentThe Olympus E-P2 is just around the corner, so are you still in the market for the E-P1? How about if it’s crawling with Swarovski crystals? Well, if bling is your thing, then feast your eyes on the gaudiness above.

If the above image calls out to you, be prepared to fork over £1999.99 (or $3,302) to own this shiny camera. Don’t come complaining to us when those cheap crystals start falling off. But if you can afford this, you probably don’t care about the dough… Or good taste.

The First ELSE Phone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on November 24th, 2009

The First ELSE PhoneThe First ELSE is an interesting mobile phone. The idea is that it’s centered around the user experience, rather than the phone itself. The First ELSE has the phone as an application on the device, rather than being the main function of the device. The camera is the same way.

We don’t yet know which operator will be getting this, but Pocket-lint did spot some representatives from Orange at the event. Target markets for the phone are the US, Western Europe and Russia. They just might be onto something here.

Vudu integrates Wikipedia

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on November 24th, 2009

Vudu integrates WikipediaVudu just announced the integration of Wikipedia into its service, featuring information about movies, actors and other info. You’ll be able to read articles and follow links, just like on Wikipedia.com. Vudu is also adding their own links to Vudu information like for instance the filmography of an actor/actress. Seems like a great way to learn more about the content you are watching and to find related content as well.

The company has been able to do steady upgrades thanks to the user-interface being generated on Vudu’s remote servers and they’ve managed to provide a consistent experience across many devices. That’s really saying something.
