Blockbuster renting Movies on SD Cards

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2009

Blockbuster renting Movies on SD CardsBlockbuster has a new program that will load DRM’d movie rentals onto an SD card from a kiosk. Let’s say that you’re at the airport, or some mall. You want to rent a movie. Apparently you just format a spare SD card (because it doesn’t look like they give you a card), put it in the machine, select a movie, pay about $4. Then you have the movie on your card with DRM.

Are they serious? An SD card won’t play on iPhones and Blackberrys. Now Mini SD and Micro SD, sure. Most mobile devices will take them. I guess it works for netbook and laptop users, but that’s about it. How about more options?

Posted in Review by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2009

Asus G51J Core i7 Mobile Gaming Notebook gets reviewedAsus released a Core 2 Duo G51 a few months ago, but now they’ve just pushed out the exact same laptop with a Core i7 and a price tag that’s $200 less. The G51J-A1 was launched along with Windows 7, and the guys over at Hot Hardware put it through it’s paces to find out what it was capable of.

Here’s what they found: the new CPU allowed this machine to leave the C2D version in the dust in every test. Graphical performance was pretty astounding. Even though there’s no Blu-ray drive, at $1,499, you don’t really expect it to be included.

The three tuners means that the thing can record three shows at once while playing a fourth recorded show back. The downside is that the new three tuner HD DVR isn’t cheap at $799 in a bundle with a single Moxi Mate.

Kindle for PC app out, Mac version coming soon

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2009

Kindle app for PCAmazon has just expanded the audience for its ebook format with the Beta release of its free Kindle for PC application. That’s a good thing too, considering all of the competition they now have. The app will allow you to read the Kindle format on your Windows PC.

A version for Mac users is “coming soon”. How many of you will use this? Or will you just opt for a different ebook format? If Amazon would do away with the proprietary stuff and use a common standard they would widen their audience even more and we wouldn’t have to sync across a few devices.
