Samsung unveils Blu-ray combo drive with 8x BD-ROM read

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on October 8th, 2009

samsung-logo-sbBlu-ray drives are becoming all the more common on notebooks and desktop computers today. This is thanks in part to the fact that Blu-ray drives are much cheaper than they were a year ago. Samsung today announced a new internal Blu-ray combo drive that will burn Blu-ray discs and read BD-ROMs at 8x.

In addition to the 8x Blu-ray reads, the drive can also read CDs at 40x and DVDs at 16x. The drive also uses Samsungs jumping algorithm that allows the drive to achieve an average access speed of 350ms, which Samsung says is much faster than other drives on the market.

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on October 8th, 2009

pspgoYou know I admit that I wasn’t sure what to think of the PSP Go when I first heard about it. I have a few UMD games around and the thought of not being able to play them because of UMD not being part of the Go irked me. I guess that didn’t bother many buyers because in the days since the Go went official sales have gone up 300% according to Sony.

In addition to hardware sales climbing 300% since launch, sales of download games on the PlayStation Store have also climbed 200%. That means that gamers are actually buying games for the Go. The increase in sale isn’t in the U.S. only either.

Bottle-opener hammer for drinking on the construction jobConstruction sites are dangerous. That’s why we have hard-hats. I can’t think of a worse place to be drinking on the job. But this Bottle-opener hammer from Harbor Freight makes it okay to have a cold one, whether you’re staggering on scaffolding or nailing your buddy’s hand to a wall.

Don’t worry about the job. It will get done when it gets done. Bill’s head will heal from that fall and Foreman Mike didn’t really need that leg anyway. Work is so much more adventurous when the booze flows.

Pill bottle caps that call you and remind you to take your medsVitality Inc. wants to sell you a new pill bottle system. The idea is that it will transmit a signal to a base station in your home every time the bottle cap is opened. So if you are not able to open the bottle cap in time, the base station will play sounds to remind you.

Should you go on vacation or are away from home, just set the base station so that it can place a call to your handset as a reminder via AT&T. No word on when we might see this or what it will cost. Do you think something like this will be popular for the elderly?

Yamaha's TSX-W80, TSX-70 iPod docksAnd the world has another iPod dock. At least Yamaha’s new TSX-W80 iPod dock has a retro flair, sporting some actual knobs. It includes an AirWired cradle that will allow you to use your iPod or iPhone as a remote, a dock on the main unit to charge your iPod, and it’s available in three different colors that have matching LED displays.

Yamaha’s new TSX-70 is a simpler and less fancy affair with no AirWired controller, but you still get the standard iPod dock and the basic clock radio functions. Nothing on a release yet, but both should be available to knob turners in Japan soon.
