JVC Picsio GC-FM 1 camcorder does 1080p HD videoJVC wants a piece of the Flip market, so its unveiled the rather attractive and shiny Picsio GC-FM1. It’s more than just a good looking compact camcorder, though. It sports an 8-megapixel sensor and can capture 1080p HD video. No built in memory here, but it shoots to SDHC cards so you can easily add more storage if you need to.

You’d think that JVC would include a card in the box to get you started, but no such luck. So, you’ll need one. Movies are in H.264 format and you can put them directly on YouTube. The device also features digital image stabilization and you can expect 96 minutes from a single charge.

StressWatch will calm you with colors

StressWatch will calm you with colorsWe live in stressful times. Traffic is stressful, so are long lines at the grocery store. So is your job, since your boss is always on your case. Oh and all of those bills. It’s enough to make you scream. Serenity now! The StressWatch can help. Maybe.

It’s a design concept that reads heart rate and body temperature data and then interprets them as levels of stress on the trippy screen. The black bar at the bottom is the stress line. And if the cool colors on the watch turn into hot pink, red or orange, man you are stressed. The idea is that it will help you know when you need to calm down.

Hasselblad unveils 60-MP H4D camera with True Focus

Posted in Cameras by Conner Flynn on September 27th, 2009

Hasselblad unveils 60-MP H4D camera with True Focus Hasselblad has unveiled a long awaited upgrade to its H System medium format cameras. The H4D is touted as being one of the first cameras to feature a true off-center autofocus system, known as True Focus. Even DSLRs often have to focus first and then reposition the camera to get focus away from the center, but the H4D has a yaw rate sensor that detects the horizontal and vertical movement away from the focus point and refocuses the lens to compensate for it.

The camera features automatic adjustment for color, vignetting and other image qualities and can be connected to a computer over FireWire to bypass the camera’s storage. The company’s own Phocus software has also been updated to be faster and easier to use.

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on September 27th, 2009

Radiation levels, cellphones, smartphones, best, worstYou probably already know that your cellphone leaks radiation into you while you’re on the phone. Of course you do. Though we try not to think about it, it is worth knowing which cellphones have the highest and lowest radiation levels. To that end, the Environmental Working Group has launched a website that rates cellphones on radiation output.

Here are the highlights: Ranking high on the list (in other words these phones put out the lowest levels of radiation) are the Motorola RAZR V8, and AT&T’s Samsung Impression. In fact, Samsung holds several spots at the top of the list. On the other end of the spectrum, some phones that rated poorly are T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G and the Blackberry Curve 8830.

Sony axes UMD conversion program

Sony axes UMD conversion programHere’s some bad news for PSP owners who want to upgrade to the PSP Go when it’s released. Sony has killed the UMD conversion plan. The idea was that PSP owners who had original UMD copies of their games would be entitled to free PSN downloads of the title, so that they can play it on the PSP Go when they upgrade.

But sadly “legal and technical reasons” put the axe on this plan. Which really sucks for PSP owners who have games they absolutely love. It sure doesn’t encourage PSP owners to upgrade and must feel like a slap in the face.

Judge Delays Hearing for Google Book Search

Posted in News by Darrin Olson on September 25th, 2009

Google Book SearchA New York District Court judge on Thursday announced the delay of the Google Book Search hearing and instead will hold a status conference on the scheduled October 7th date. Google Book Search is a settlement case that has been pending for more than four years between Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers. The deal would allow Google to digitize millions of out-of-print, coprighted books and make them available for sale to readers online. The authors and publishers of the books would share in sales and advertising profits.

The delay from judge Denny Chin comes due to a recommendation from the Department of Justice who felt that the settlement proposal violates copyright, class-action and antitrust regulations. Chin stated that the hearing currently “makes no sense…as it does not appear the current settlement will be the operative one.”
