Amazon warns of PS3 Slim shortages

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 21st, 2009

Amazon warns of PS3 Slim shortagesIf you’ve been putting off that pre-order for the new PS3 Slim, you might want to get moving on it. Amazon US has warned of shortages for the new slim PlayStation 3 when the system launches next month. It’s limiting Slim sales to just one per person per household.

It’s five-Slims-per-person in the UK, which doesn’t seem fair to us. Sony in Europe isn’t worried, since it has “trucks and trailers” of the new console already on the road . Are they taking a page from the Wii playbook and spiking demand? We’re not sure. All we know is that you best get your order in.

duracellchargepadOf all the features, you could add to my smartphone, at the top of the list of features I really want is easier charging. It’s not difficult mind you to plug in a cable, it’s just inconvenient since I always have to climb around under the desk looking for it after it inevitably falls off.

I want to walk in and lay the phone down to charge and be done. We have seen this type of wireless charging system before from WildCharge. Duracell is now peddling a line of Smartpower devices including one called the myGrid charging pad. The pad lets users charge multiple devices by just laying them on the pad.

Microsoft introduces the LifeCam Cinema

Posted in Microsoft by Shane McGlaun on August 21st, 2009

microsoftlifecamcinemaOne of the things that are typical of many webcams that are built into monitors and notebooks is that they suck. The video quality of the cheap webcams inside netbooks for example leaves a lot to be desired. Video is grainy, resolution is poor, and any recorded clips with the camera are choppy.

Microsoft announced a new webcam called the LifeCam Cinema that promises to change all of that. The webcam has 720p resolution and an external mic. The native 720p sensor is perfect for the user who wants to record video to upload to YouTube.

Shacklie adds a handcuff to your umbrellaIs there anything worse than umbrella theft? Umbrella theives are the lowest form of life. You may not be aware of it, but umbrella theft accounts for nearly 80% of all theft in the U.S. Even though I just made that figure up, it still sucks to have your umbrella stolen and have to get soaked on the way home.

The Shacklie can help. It’s basically a lock or handcuff on the handle of the umbrella. This way you can secure your umbrella while it’s not in use. Maybe even catch a criminal and escort him to the police.

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on August 20th, 2009

Here’s a much better way to get rich than the metal detecting sandals and it will take just as long to amass your wealth. Why wear sandals when a robot can do it for you? ThunderBird 007 is the latest version of Let’s Make Robots user Gareth’s metal detector robots.

It’s a great little bot. And when you think about it, robots should search for treasure and earn their own keep and pay for their own parts. The TB-007 features a metal detecting wand, wireless camera and a laser pointer to point out it’s finds. It could get really fun if you run into another guy controlling his own bot and have to have your robots fight for the treasure.

Star Trek Tricorder / media playerAmeralis Grafx‘ Tricorder PMP-09 is not only a replica of the famous Star Trek tricorder, it also functions as a portable media player. The geek in me just wet his pants a little. This baby is equipped with a 2.8″ TFT colored screen, 8 GB of memory, and a battery that can play 4 hours of video or 12 hours of music before recharge.

The device is compatible with AVI, MP4, MP3, WAV, JPG and BMP files. Sadly no browser, so it won’t detect lifeforms or Google. The media player comes in 6 versions, each with their own version of the LCARS interface, from Star Trek. The Starfleet model is shown in the picture above. There’s also Medical, Borg and Marine models. Forget the fact that the Borg didn’t use tricorders.

Wiipod Wiimote mp3 player

Wiipod Wiimote mp3 playerThis is a pretty cool idea. I wish I had thought of it. Modder goteking has turned a Wii remote into a music player. I never ever thought that I would see a Wiimote with headphones.

Under the hood is an iPod shuffle. Well, a fake iPod shuffle that has also been modified. It’s not often that we see a mod within a mod. It blows our minds. But mostly we just love how a Wiimote looks with headphones.
