Mug for the blind prevents spills

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Mug for the blind prevents spillsFilling a mug is something that people with sight take for granted. For the blind it presents a challenge. Spills can happen when you can’t actually see the level of liquid. Of course clean up is challenging for us all and something that we would rather avoid if possible.

Well, this Braun Bell concept mug solves the problem in a unique common sense way. It chimes when the liquid hits one of three levels within the mug, allowing a blind person to know when their cup is filled to the level that they want.

USB Alarm Clock hub

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

USB Alarm Clock hubThis USB hub doubles as an alarm clock, which could be a good thing if you have a desk job that has you falling asleep at the computer. Just set it to go off when you want to wake up and pretend you’re busy. It has 4 USB 2.0 ports that can be rotated 90 degrees.

Some other features include a transfer rate of up to 480Mbps and the alarm clock has a calendar, built in clock and an alarm function that plays 5 tunes. It’s an odd combination for sure and comes in orange, green and blue.

Steampunk USB flash drive

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Steampunk USB flash driveThis Steampunk USB Flash Drive looks a little more authentic than some others. This one was created by a Russian modder, using some cogs, screws and a brass pipe.

You can easily picture this one attached to a victorian laptop, had they had such things. You can load your plans for all of your Steampunk creations on this drive and keep them safe in style. If you think you have the skill and want to make your own flash drive with a similar look, full instructions are available at English Russia.

Orcish World Of Warcraft PC case

Posted in Cases by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Orcish World Of Warcraft PC caseI’m not a WOW player, but this PC case with WOW art on it looks pretty damn sweet, featuring some Orc artwork. The translations make it difficult to figure out, but this is either a retail case or a PC case mod that will cost you $299.

If I was an uber WOW geek, I would snag this one up quick and brag to all of my guild mates about it. Then they would have no choice but to make me guild leader. One day it will happen. One day. It has to. It’s all I have. It is my destiny.

Super Mario chess set

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Super Mario chess setThis Super Mario chess set is a little strange. The first thing I noticed was King Bowser and his Queen Koopa. Really? Queen Koopa? I thought he was a guy. What the hell is going on with those two? Maybe I missed something, or else I was busy playing games where people die horribly with gunfire. Wait, they have Luigi as Mario’s queen too…

Anyhow, you can’t call yourself a Super Mario fan unless you are playing chess with this collector’s edition chess set from USAopoly. You just might need some therapy after. The chess set includes 32 hand-painted figures from the game series including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad, 1-up mushroom, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Birdo, Goomba, Hammer Bros., and Magikoopa.

Kid plays Guitar Hero, solves 2 Rubik’s Cubes at the same time

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

This kid is playing Guitar Hero on expert and solving two Rubik’s cubes simultaneously. Showoff! He goes by the handle of “JRefleX93″. And though he solves both cubes by the end of the video, he doesn’t hit every single note, but he hits more than you would have. With his elbow. In the end he has a 77% rating and his choice of nerd groupies.

This is six minutes of solid geek gold, until the end, when it fades to black and the kid gets too cocky letting out a groan that ruins the entire thing. But hey, props to this kid for six minutes of geek fun.

Posted in Kitchen by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Waring Pro Cordless Wine OpenerDrinking wine depends on wine openers. How are you going to drink your sweet booze if you forget the wine opener? Well if you own the Waring Pro Cordless Wine Opener, it’s all good. This gizmo costs $45 and fetures a rubberized body with brushed stainless accents. Plus, it’s powered by a rechargeable NiMH battery pack, so it doesn’t need to be confined to just the kitchen.

You also get a rechargeable base unit, with removable foil cutter. It has you covered no matter how pickled your liver is, as it will open 80 natural corks on a single charge. If that isn’t enough then you are too drunk to care anyway.

Portable Tap Dispenser

Posted in Apparel by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Portable Tap DispenserThe Portable Tap Dispenser is a backpack with a dispensing tap that holds whatever brew you choose. It keeps the party firmly on your back. It also has a cupholder. Not since ghostbusters have backpacks been so cool. I don’t know about you, but I would rather be drinking than catching ghosts. Still, don’t cross the streams, that would be bad.

We don’t know what the capacity is, but it looks big enough to get you good and drunk. Maybe then you’ll see ghosts and try to catch them with beer. It will cost you $35.

We will remain ever watchful. For now, if your roomba acts strange in any way, smash it like Mario smashing a Goomba. Here’s some of what we covered this week over at Botropolis.

Build your own Battlestar Galactica Viper rocket

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on August 7th, 2009

Build your own Battlestar Galactica Viper rocketAh memories. Remember the Battlestar and Star Trek replica rockets from Estes? That was about 20 years ago. Estes discontinued them a long time ago, but you can still build one today.

Verna Rockets has the full skinny on its own builds, with links to several sites for parts and instructions. So what are you waiting for? Go build a flying model rocket that looks like a Viper, the U.S.S. Enterprise, and even The Black Hole Space Probe from “The Black Hole” movie. This is really awesome news. Anytime you combine rockets with Battlestar Galactica, it’s all win.

OpenChord allows real guitars to play Guitar Hero

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on August 7th, 2009

GuitarOpenChord has designed a system that allows an actual real guitar to sync up with your Nintendo Wii to play Guitar Hero. Just plug the Wiimote into the guitar and use real strings and frets instead of plastic buttons. There is one hitch and it’s a big one.

Guitar Hero wasn’t designed for use with six strings and 22 to 24 frets. Which kinda blows the whole thing out of the water. Too bad. Playing GH with a real guitar sounds like a nightmare. Who would have thought? Check out a video below.

Otter Box unveils cases for Blackberry Tour

Posted in Otterbox by Shane McGlaun on August 7th, 2009

tourdefender-sbOne of my friends is always dropping his phone. The guy went through four iPhones in six months because he kept dropping it and breaking the screen. After the fourth iPhone broke, he spent the money on the Otter Box Defender case and the fourth iPhone has lasted him a long time now.

Otter Box has announced a new line of cases for the recently launched Blackberry Tour including the Defender and the Impact. Those needing the ultimate protection will want to get the Defender. The case sells for $49.95 and is designed to protect the Tour from drops, bumps, dust, and shocks. All of the ports are accessible along with all functions of the phone when it’s in the case.
